Jenkins: here, Caz and Bertolucci have given an excellent explanation, and I would like to add one (somewhat related), which is that it's not just about the ease of production, but also the uniqueness of the author: music, literature, and painting/sculpture can have, and often do have, a single author, while cinema can never have that. And no, the parallel composer/per performer vs. director/actors does not hold at all. That said, I realize this is only a taxonomic issue, so to speak. It’s clear that there can be wonderful works in cinema as well.
