great review... but I would have given an even lower score. the eels are among my absolute favorites but this album was a disappointment, it sounds like one of mr.E's solo albums, a bit naive and lacking anything striking. I was about to write a review myself on shootenanny!, what do I do with my life now?!? ;-P

You're right, I also don't like the adjective "commercial," but I use it to refer to a certain attitude. I know very well (and my wallet knows it even better than I do) that I have to spend the 20 euros anyway, even on a disc by Zita Swoon, whom no one knows if they come out of Antwerp; if a band has a minimum of success, they are obliged to adhere to certain logics; I don't dispute that. I just say that some make music only as a job, packaging their product properly to meet audience tastes, but they believe ZERO in what they do; others, however, do it to get by but first and foremost to express the sparks that arise in their soul. That's all. But it's a discussion too complex to be exhausted in a few comments.
