Dream Theater A Dramatic Turn Of Events

Okay, I liked the review and perhaps it is the most objective of those I've read on this site. The album is much better than the previous ones since "Scenes from a Memory" ... but there’s still a long way to go; DT still need to break free from many clichés they've overused in their earlier works. LaBrie seems much more natural to me, Petrucci is still too tied to unrestrained virtuosity, Mangini is too shy, Rudess is evolving toward more "ambient" sounds; the tracks still show persistent traces of baroque elements ... I would have liked them to conceive more songs in the style of "Build Me Up, Break Me Down," which perhaps takes me back to the days of "Awake"; even "Lost Not Forgotten" and "Bridges in the Sky" are overall interesting and well-structured, and they evoke certain sounds touched upon in "Scenes from a Memory." I also enjoyed finding a song like "Far from Heaven" on the album. The album is very inspired, and you can feel it, but perhaps it is still too naively devoted to virtuosity.

Sorry, but where do you think punk comes from? ... it seems proto-punk to me.

Yes, but I didn't understand what genre they play... what kind of music it is, how many they are... even Classical music can be instrumental. In short, for me this review doesn't say anything at all.

I am very attached to MASTODON, who were a pleasant discovery for me back in the days of "Leviathan." But these BARONESS just don't attract me... maybe you’re right, it takes multiple listens to appreciate them, but to be honest, the difference is that with MASTODON it was love at first listen.
The Ocean Anthropocentric

Maybe I'm just getting old, but this music doesn't captivate me as it used to. Structurally, these genres don't allow for much "personalism" and they have overly rigid norms. I listened to something from their latest album by "The Ocean" and I have to say I found the usual patterns, the same rhythms, and very "emo" melodies peeking out here and there amidst the post-hardcore outbursts. Don't get me wrong, they are incredibly talented and know how to craft "technical" sections masterfully. They are also heavily inclined towards "progressive," which I particularly appreciate (at times they remind me of Oceansize, as well as Tool, but in certain moments they even remind me of Opeth for some technical aspects). Certainly a breath of fresh air, nonetheless, because what they do, they do well, but the themes just don't convince me: the idea of dismantling the principles or exposing the contradictions of the Christian church (which, by the way, aren’t exactly latent) as if they were philosophy professors... bah, I find it too pretentious, in my opinion.

I’ve listened to it a couple of times or a little more, and in my opinion, in every comment I’ve read following this review, I found something I agree with. It does seem like a rather disjointed album, fragmented, where the acoustic instruments are almost completely overwhelmed by the electronics; the influence of "The Eraser" is quite evident… the sense of alienation in York is taken to high levels. It made me cringe at first listens as well: first of all, it’s very short, almost a showcase of potential that isn’t fully realized. The description "the AMNESIAC of IN RAINBOWS" from comment 18 is really beautiful… I agree!
Anyway, fortunately, it’s not an immediately accessible album and it requires several listens to be absorbed, understood, and finally, perhaps, appreciated for what it deserves (I notice that almost all of you didn't feel like giving it a high score on first listens, which confirms my theory of a record that needs time to be digested, if one is willing to do so, of course).
I’ll throw out a minimum score that could go up or down.
For the review, I give a 3 for the welcome back, but I didn’t like it: not very incisive, too many words and too few noteworthy concepts, almost completely debatable… and then one of the tracks that struck me the most on first listens is precisely "Codex."
