Fuck, I was listening to it yesterday. The album has 2 beautiful gems, it doesn't compare to the earlier ones, but damn it's almost impossible. Anyway, at the time it was received as the album of the Doors' comeback after the disappointing (???) Morrison Hotel. As for Iggy Pop, when he saw a live performance by the Doors, he was struck; Morrison has always been his idol. Of course, when it comes to replacing any member of any band, that's a whole different conversation, especially if that member is Jim Morrison or characters of that caliber.
