Your opinion is completely respectable, man. I’m not crazy about tapping either, and honestly, Van Halen (this is just my personal opinion, I swear) doesn’t impress me much either. Anyway, I wanted to slightly counter your statement about Hackett being an anonymous guitarist, aside from the tapping discussion. Supersoul, I'm not judging Abraxas, it’s a milestone, and I’m not judging even the Santana of that time, I’m only critiquing the Santana of today. From bjorky's comment, I was inspired to share my thoughts: Santana is still considered a guitar hero, and because of that, he’s overrated. It’s not that the Santana of Abraxas is overrated; it’s the Santana of the last 20 years (maybe even longer) that is overrated. And come on, Supersoul, if I had anything negative to say about the work, I wouldn’t have given it a 5.

Technique is not everything, I fully agree. But if after 37-38 years you're still playing exactly the same solos, it means you've stagnated. And those who stagnate go backwards, so it's not me who's wearing blinders. Anyway, I'm thinking about Santana from the last 20 years, the one that's no longer interesting, not the Santana of Woodstock and Abraxas. Back then, he was nothing short of incendiary, and I appreciate him for that, not for the duets with Ricky Martin and Lauryn Hill, where, by the way, he always plays the same things.

Hackett not influential? A real load of nonsense, and pardon my French! Hackett in 1971 performed a technique, then unknown, called tapping. It's true that Santana has been important; he certainly did great things in his time, but he also made a lot of mediocre work, and over time he has proven to be repetitive, monotonous, and no longer interesting. At least for me. I find his recent albums (and not just those) to be the same old soup as Abraxas, except that while in 1970 (and for a few years thereafter) the soup was an inviting, delightful, and innovative dish, now it has become cold, stale, and filled with superfluous ingredients (like various unnecessary guests). This applies both to his musical style and his guitar technique.

Fripp and Hackett have nothing to do with it but were simply better than him. It’s pointless to praise him as a guitar hero when he was already outdated in his time (even by Hendrix, Clapton, Page, Blackmore, Beck, and several others)! He deserves some credit, such as having coined a genre (which was still a team effort), but not for being a guitar virtuoso!

Not bad this review. However, I agree with bjorky: Santana is one of the most overrated guitarists ever, having been undeservedly elevated to the status of guitar hero. Even in his time, there were guys like Robert Fripp and Steve Hackett who could really smoke him! Abraxas, however, is a great album.

@ Meurglys III: I don't think there's much to be surprised about. Italy has always been very receptive to progressive music; in fact, Van Der Graaf, Gentle Giant, and initially even Genesis were overlooked in their home country but received very well in Italy. Also, in my opinion, the Italian prog scene is second only to the English one. A couple of steps down, maybe, but in the end, still second.

This album is undoubtedly a 5, but from an emotional standpoint, I must reiterate that Nursery Cryme is unmatched! From Foxtrot onward, Genesis gained in stylistic elegance but perhaps gradually toned down the emotional component in favor of an ever-increasing theatricality. For example, I've never been able to listen to The Lamb Lies Down On Broadway in its entirety, it's too pretentious.

Nice review. I completely disagree with those who, out of bias, give low ratings to reviews just because they involve artists who aren't appreciated. I'm not a fan of rap, hip hop, and R'n'B either, but I have to say that despite this, I found Trick Me quite likable. However, I think they didn't air the Milkshake video during protected hours not only because of Kelis's breasts, but also because of all the milk that was erupting from the blenders. A rather explicit allegory.

On the long-standing question of "why Aida Yespica was sleeping with Dj Francesco," one could well hypothesize that Yespica is as beautiful and hot as she is stupid and easy. She probably has a grain of sand where her brain should be and a manhole cover between her legs. And since God makes them and then pairs them up, given that they are both two brainless individuals with a capital D, it doesn't seem so strange that they were together. Just to gossip a bit...

Never liked them. Excellent musicians, but I’ve always found their music syrupy, lacking depth. A modest chart-topping pop-rock typical of the '80s, no matter how well played. Reception so-so.
