Well, ladies and gentlemen, after 9 months from the discovery of this album, I've finally managed to reevaluate it for the masterpiece it is... how many of you fell for it? Surely everyone. Let me tell you right away, this DADMEDAS is universally a great album, but it falters in a few more forgettable tracks and some more predictable lines; still, just mentioning Quattro stracci, Vorrei, Cirano, Lettera, and Stelle makes me swoon. Alongside these 5 spectacular tracks are great yet not memorable pieces like Il caduto and Il matto, a nice diversion titled I fichi, and a forgettable Canzone della colomba e del fiore. In my opinion, all it needed was a little more effort, because the album is just a step away from the masterpiece that almost everyone talks about. (P.S. my meticulous rating remains unchanged, 8.5)

After that, and I was never a great admirer of his, I stopped buying it. Nowadays, the only thing I can listen to of his is the legendary "fra la via emilia e il west."
A fundamental album for Battiato's future, a pessimistic album that hopes for a reset of today's world for something better. The manifesto of all this is the powerful Clamori, immediately followed by the fierce La torre, the gloomy Radio Varsavia, and the decisive L'esodo. Not that the others are any less, Voglio vederti danzare is legendary and Scalo a grado has one of Battiato's most memorable lyrics. The arrangements are a bit bare, veering away from the richness of its predecessors to something much sparser, digital, and hard; they may appeal to some or not, I stand a bit in the middle. Still, L'arca di Noè is a great album for Battiato, who after the success of La voce del padrone seems to have changed direction towards something different. 8/10, the weakest of the 80s and that says a lot.
Fucking weird, very weird. So crazy that it's beautiful.

Nothing, one of the greatest Italian albums for me. Even the ones that are essentially fillers are excellent. And then there are the more successful tracks...5 stars for life.
Do I need to add anything else? It's not perfect like La voce del padrone... but come on, there's Up patriots to arms, there's Prospettiva Nevski, there's Venezia Istanbul, and so on; I could name them all. An album that is still huge today, timeless. 9/10, another classic.

For me, those released in the 80s are all masterpieces (except for L'arca) and even in the less powerful moments like Mondi lontanissimi, they are elevated by gems like Via Lattea and No time no space. For me, Fisiognomica is only behind Gommalacca.

Mondi is definitely the best of the trio, it also has L'animale, and it’s somewhat of a semi-compilation considering the presence of his versions of Treni di Tozeur, Chan-son egocentrique, and the reprise of il re del mondo.

After the half-false step of the Ark, it had to necessarily change; that's why an electronic album without "classic" instruments ended up being not entirely successful but with beautiful lyrics. La voce del padrone, but also Patriots and L'era del cinghiale bianco, seemed so far away but only a couple of years had passed!

The peak together with the previous Pigro. Here we reach the height of his production (alongside Fango): Fuoco sulla collina is a masterpiece of immense storytelling, a beautifully sung nightmare and perfectly centered guitar riffs. If we don't count the others... Taglia la testa al gallo, Agnese, Fame, Il piede di San Raffaele, Dottor Jekyll and Mister Hyde, Modena park... not a single piece less powerful than the other, truly frightening! I've always preferred Pigro between the two, but this... is spectacular! Best tracks: Fuoco sulla collina, Taglia la testa al gallo, Agnese.

Reevaluated. An album that you might listen to once and appreciate a lot... but after a few months of not hearing it, you struggle to remember a good part of the tracks. To give you an idea, I first listened to it in July 2020, and after almost a year of not listening to it entirely, I can only recall four songs; the rest is a blank slate. The inspiration is there, but unfortunately, it’s not as memorable as the self-titled album or Ivangarage, nor is it on the level of Ballata and Seni e coseni. It's certainly a well-crafted work, but it doesn't deserve more than 3.5 stars.
Ivan Graziani: Seni e coseni
CD Audio I have it ★★★★
So, where to begin? Side A features four well-crafted ballads, polished to a shine by sacrificing ferocity (except for a bit of Ehi padre eterno) for a softness more akin to Venditti, which risks becoming monotonous after a while. Nevertheless, it produces some beautiful tracks like Pasqua and Ehi padre eterno. The second side brings us back to our dear Ivan, even if this time the lyrics don't always hit the mark. Nevertheless, it remains a good album, even if it can feel heavy upon a full listen. Best tracks: Pasqua, Digos boogie, Ehi padre eterno.

Unfortunately, this album halted Ivan's commercial career. Being a true artist, he wanted to try a new approach; with "Viaggi e intemperie," a period had come to a close. The first side features our artist's voice accompanied only by piano and acoustic guitar. “Ehi padre eterno” is a bit cold, placed as the opening track of the album, somewhat reminiscent of Battiato with “Radio Varsavia.” That said, “Pasqua” and “Cleo” are two classics. The second side, with the full band, glides by without leaving, alas, too many impressions. The subsequent album, filled with potential hits, was presented at the time on a Fininvest channel, where he appeared weekly in a program showcasing tracks from the album, but it failed to revive Ivan's commercial career.

You hit the nail on the head. Side A is the most successful, with tracks like Pasqua, Ehi padre eterno, and Cleo, but it’s too long. Side B has only Digos boogie and Ugo l'italiano that's worth mentioning; the rest isn’t memorable.

I don't know what to say... I was expecting a great album, inspired by that little gem Lucetta fra le stelle... but Limiti immediately thought to bury it all with "that stupid heart of yours always looking for love," good intentions for a textually mediocre song. What follows is pretty trivial, with the cute Il tamburino, the catchy Minù Minù, and the filler Gangsters. There are definitely some nice tracks, after all, we're still talking about Ivan; Blouson noir and Io che c'entro would be enough to place this album among the classics. The problem is that everything is contextualized within the 80s, trapping the songs in what was fashionable back then. It's not a bad album, just more ordinary and already heard. Best tracks: Blouson noir, Io che c'entro, Lucetta fra le stelle.

Limiti is fine, it's the single, and all things considered, it had the right cards to be played on the radio. The album is very well played and arranged (by the young Celso Valli). Unfortunately, it lacks the classy touches that characterized the previous works. "Lucetta fra le stelle" is my favorite.
Ivan Graziani: Piknic

FUCKING HELL. I've been listening to this all day and I can't take it anymore, this album is truly a (half) disaster. Are we perhaps at Ivan's lowest point, a continuous rant that barely manages to finish a single listen? Well, the first 5 tracks are actually okay: Sola is a good start, catchy enough and musically brilliant, Ed è felicità has a nice rhythm and a text with some kick even if it doesn't hit the mark completely, La mia isola (as well as Evviva Vivì) is the best of the bunch and brings the guitar to the forefront. Because in the end, the real problem of this album isn't the excessive electronics, which, while annoying, Ivan manages to turn into a strength by combining it with his guitar arpeggios, but rather the inspiration of the songs, which in some cases goes practically to absolute zero: Soffice and Ho paura dei temporali have badly written lyrics, and it's not about throwing shade on Ivan (which is something I would rather avoid) but the fact that these two tracks are really written just to fill space, and it's a shame because the arrangements had some nice guitar play. However, the medal for the most disgusting piece goes rightfully to Baby love, where Ivan reaches the songwriting level of any random Biagio Antonacci. I... don’t know what to say, half of the album is well put together even if with a few too many trendy bends, the other half is a total disaster, thrown in just for the runtime.

Ivan has always been my favorite singer-songwriter, but this album is truly lacking. I can't wrap my head around how someone like him could release songs like "soffice" or "baby love"... His distance from the project is evident throughout. Nice pieces like "Sola" and "La mia isola" (beautiful guitar arpeggio, which I think is not fully utilized) are somewhat improvable as well; as for the other songs, some are even salvageable, but they have never completely convinced me. Fortunately, Ivan will return in 1989, free from any constraints, with the spectacular "Ivangarage."

The golden period of Ivan comes to an end here, after exceptional albums like Pigro and that small merciless gem of I lupi. Ivan manages to drop the powerful trio Isabella on the train-Dada-Syracuse, only to then throw out beautiful ballads like Firenze and Olanda, and especially that splinter of madness called Tutto questo cosa c'entra con il R&R... but this time Ivan's bank doesn't win, both due to poorly crafted lyrics (Radio Londra, even though it has a very powerful rock driving it) and certain arrangements that don't captivate (Angelina). As for the rating, I'd rather not talk about it; I'll just say it's not quite full.

  • Martello
    6 aug 20
I also wrote that it’s not a full 5, in fact it doesn’t even reach 4.5 by a small margin. Nevertheless, it’s quite full of great pieces; just for the trio Isabella-Dada-Siracusa, I would have given it a full 5… it’s just a pity about Radio Londra and Angelina, because the former has a really nice instrumental but the lyrics aren’t always effective, and the latter just doesn’t manage to move me (but that’s a personal issue of mine).

    6 aug 20
I agree, here the circle closes that started with The Wolves and culminated in Pigro and Agnese. I would also say it’s underrated if it weren’t for that ballad of rivers of tears Florence.
He told me less about Discanto. Always a high level, masterpieces like Sigonella, La Madonna Nera, Mio fratello che guardi il mondo, Notturno delle tre, Poca voglia di fare il soldato, and Lindbergh are not easily forgotten. However, compared to the previous two, it didn't completely captivate me. Not less beautiful, just less heartfelt. It's a matter of taste; some prefer pandoro over panettone, but they enjoy both.
As a taste of a less ethnic Fossati, it works. Obviously, compared to La pianta del tè, this is more powdery, but it can still be appreciated, especially for the very solid arrangements. Splendid Ventilazione, Viaggiatore d'occidente, and Boogie, as well as the quite decent Le grandi destinazioni and Il pilota. The rest isn’t always spot on, but it doesn’t really take away much. Really nice.

Probably his most "rock" work, at least in terms of the hardness (granite, fitting adjective) of the compositions and arrangements. "Viaggiatori d'occidente" is the jewel that stands out above all, always been one of my favorites of his. "Boogie" is actually a classic by Paolo Conte (an absolute pillar of the legal repertoire), a cover that, while magnificently "fossatized" (there's no noticeable "break" with the rest of the album), doesn't hold up to the original in my opinion. It's fair to say, more beautiful than the previous ones, less beautiful than the subsequent ones.

Up until the subsequent listens of Lindbergh, Macramè, and La disciplina, my ranking is:

2/1: Discanto
3/4: La disciplina della terra
4/3: Macramè
5: Lindbergh
Every word would be superfluous. I only say that the intro to Caffè lontano is one of the most beautiful things birthed by the human mind.

It's another masterpiece. The first part (from La vita segreta to L'angelo e la pazienza included) is truly one of the highlights of the author, at the peak, featuring five wonderful masterpieces like La vita segreta or the stunning L'amante, but the other three (especially Il canto dei mestieri) are marvels of songs as well. The second part loses a bit of inspiration but still remains at excellent levels, showcasing gems like Labile, Bella speranza, and L'orologio americano. It all concludes with the instrumental Speakering, a spectacular and fitting closure. In conclusion, this Macramè has convinced me more than Lindbergh but not as much as Discanto and La pianta del tè. Still a masterpiece.

Well, I’d say it’s pointless to say things like “it’s the best album by Litfiba” or “masterpiece!!!” because too many have said that already. I’ll just say that it’s not all roses and flowers: "Come un Dio" has the worst arrangement on the album (the live version from 12-5-87 is definitely better), "Cane" has always felt too chaotic to me, and the album as a whole leaves you tired... but satisfied; it’s not 66 minutes thrown down the toilet. Lucio Battisti: E Già
CD Audio I have it
Slightly better than I remembered... even if my judgment hasn’t changed that much. The foundations are very nice, but they’re all a bit on the same level, which, on one hand, makes the album feel much more cohesive, but on the other hand, it makes it monotone and lacking in surprises. The lyrics... well, they are what they are, not these great masterpieces but they are pleasant and sometimes quite interesting (like in Straniero). Among the tracks, I found Scrivi il tuo nome and E già fantastic, Straniero very beautiful, and Una montagna, Mistero, and Slow motion cute. The rest doesn't really move me either way, somewhat like what happened with the debut. An important album, definitely, but not groundbreaking. I liked it more than La batteria il contrabbasso eccetera. 6/10, now it’s time to get serious.
Maybe it’s not a masterpiece... but wow, how beautiful this album is. The opener "I giardini di marzo" is stunning (even though a part of me thinks the refrain could have been greatly improved, but I’ll keep that to myself and let it go), fun and danceable "Innocenti evasioni," an absolute masterpiece "E penso a te," beautifully dreamy the title track, very cute "Comunque bella," adorable "Il leone e la galline," quite cool even though with a bit too light a text "Sognando e risognando," for Fantozzi fans 92 minutes of applause for the concluding "Il fuoco"... in short, a great album, even though it remains a step below "Amore e non amore" for me. 8/10, and here Battisti is absolutely on fire.
The antithesis of Emozioni. Musically, it is pure avant-garde for its time; just listen to the punk-infused vibe of Se la mia pelle vuoi to understand how forward-thinking it is. From this album, it’s honestly difficult to determine which tracks are the best or worst; it's all so cohesive that it feels like a 35-minute song. But if I had to choose, Dio mio no and Supermarket, along with Una notevole and all the instrumental tracks, are of the highest quality. However, it might be lacking that "shocking" track, the big surprise like Il vento from the first album, but honestly, it doesn’t matter since the whole album is a remarkable, ongoing surprise. 8/10, maybe over time it could become a 9.
Lucio Battisti: Emozioni
CD Audio I have it
Why is this album so damn beautiful?! It surprised me; I wasn't expecting it to be so fresh considering the times it was released. The songs, I must say, one more cult than the other, from Fiori rosa to Mi ritorni in mente, from Anna to Il tempo di morire, from the rather nice Dieci ragazze and Acqua azzurra acqua chiara to that absolute masterpiece Emozioni. Then, of course, there are also the reworks of tracks from the previous album like Non è Francesca and Io vivrò that are always welcome, as well as the lesser-known but excellent tracks like Dolce di giorno and Era. A must in name and fact, and I certainly don't need to say it. 8/10, if according to some the "true" Battisti begins with the next one, a series of fantastic albums is on the horizon.
Absolutely amazing, but I need to listen to it again since I wasn’t able to follow it perfectly. There’s really so much going on in this album, and every track is more formidable than the last; every single piece is monstrous in every way. But the absolute masterpieces, if I have to mention them, are: La canzone della terra, an absolutely incredible hidden gem, Il nostro caro angelo, definitely one of Mogol's most beautiful lyrics and one of the duo's loveliest pieces, Questo inferno rosa, musically a pure balm, and La collina dei ciliegi of course (and also Le allettanti promesse). 9/10, I found this album to be a more focused version of Umanamente uomo, also in terms of experimentation.
Yes, it’s still perfect, to the point that I don't really know what else to say that hasn't already been said a thousand times. It's simply one of the most brilliant albums ever produced in Italy and Battisti's absolute masterpiece. 10/10, the title track is the best song Battisti has ever made.
It was great to listen to it again after so many years. Among the albums I've listened to during the marathon so far, this is easily the best: the music may become less eclectic, but it's also much more mature, making tracks like Il mio canto libero and Io vorrei even more overwhelming. The lyrics are more focused too, often with a heavier tone, like in L'aquila, but sometimes they're also fun, like in Luci-ah or Gente per bene gente per male. But if I have to think about the tracks that will stay with me forever, I think of two opposite poles: Confusione, a fun blues-rock song that I still know by heart, and especially La luce dell'est, which I hadn’t listened to in years and hit me hard, truly bringing tears to my eyes. I didn't see it coming at all, but this album is really something special. 9/10, the most popular Battisti at his highest level.

My dear, this is the first piece of what I call his "golden" triptych, the three peaks of Battisti in the '70s, him and of course the two masterpieces that followed.
Overrated?...yes, I have to say yes. But the album is still beautiful, arranged impeccably. Moreover, there are also tracks among Battisti's best, like Prendila così and Perché no, but also milestones like Nessun dolore and the title track. Yes, the lyrics are not at their best, but honestly, in some parts they manage to return to former glory, so it’s fine. And yes, there are also a couple of minor tracks, actually just two: Maledetto gatto (which still makes me smile) and Al cinema, which continues to make me say "m'ascolto L'interprete di un film che fo prima." 8/10, not the best of Battisti but a must-have step.
It continues to be painfully mediocre, please don’t take it the wrong way. The main flaws are three: the arrangements, sometimes too synthetic or too pompous, it remains the worst-arranged album by Lucio and that’s disappointing, because certain tracks are pushed down (like Amore mio di provincia, which remains nice). The second major flaw is the lyrics, and here a nice parenthesis must be opened: it was already known that Mogol was running out of creativity, but in this album, he is truly at an all-time low, often going off the rails. And the last flaw is Battisti's voice; I don’t know what happened to him, but in many tracks, he doesn’t sing, he shouts, screams like a madman and this destroys the pieces, completely burying them, even Orgoglio e dignità is disintegrated by a chorus that is almost entirely screamed with an unbearable falsetto. All this makes a good part of the album's tracks go to waste: Monolocale, Orgoglio e dignità, Arrivederci a questa sera, Amore mio di provincia, all nice pieces but forgettable, and then there are Una vita viva, Questo amore and Perchè non sei una mela which made me want to stop the album, they are truly bland and especially useless. Out of 10 tracks, only Gelosa cara, the title track, and Con il nastro rosa are fully redeemable, but they also suffer from the defects already mentioned (the first two, absolutely not Nastro rosa). 5/10, let’s move on.

I think it's a great album; apart from "Una vita viva," which sounds like a children's song, I like all the others.

The worst song by Battisti. Of all times.
