Black Flag: Slip It In

It may have turned up the nose of some fans expecting the Black Flag of Damaged, but taken on its own, it is a pristine album, a delight for the ears.

oh my god, yes, I know what was popular in 90s punk, and I hope the best 90s punk album is something I’ve never even known existed. I wish that with all my heart. If I were to give you my two "favorite" 90s punk records, you’d get goosebumps, I hope.

Dinosaur Jr.: Bug
CD Audio I have it ★★★★★
The album is a beautiful sequence of songs carved in noise. However, whether it’s because J's guitar work tends to overshadow Lou's bass, or because the latter is given no compositional space (and to think that "Lose" on the previous album was a memorable gem), the cohesion of the band starts to crack, hinting at the end of a partnership that left its mark by the end of the '80s.

I completely agree. What more can I say?

One of my biggest questions: sounds fantastic, and very influential without a doubt, but I keep thinking that in terms of composition, of songwriting, they leave a lot to be desired, and I have this one and the previous one, which should be the best, who knows.
  • Johnny b.
    25 aug 17
In some ways, it’s true. Musically influential with just a few tracks truly worth remembering over time, and they haven't aged very well. It’s been about fifteen years since I've felt the urge to listen to them. In the nineties, especially the early part, I did nothing but listen to these two albums.
Dinosaur Jr.: Dinosaur
CD Audio I have it ★★★★
Imaginative pop/rock compositions with a sparse yet tight arrangement. The electric guitar goes glin-glin instead of the roaaarrrrr of the later records, but that’s not necessarily a flaw.
Dinosaur Jr.: You're Living All Over Me
CD Audio I have it ★★★★★
"Little Fury Thing" inaugurates the new genre of pop music sculpted in noise, but it’s the subsequent trio "Kracked," "Sludgefeast," and "The Lung" that makes the album memorable.

The first time I listened to it, I thought I had bought a demo, and when I reached the end with the Cure cover, I said to myself, this CD is defective. None of this was born from something new. The seed had been planted.
  • ygmarchi2
    22 aug 17
Well, the Cure's cover isn't part of the album from my perspective. It's a bonus track added in a later CD edition. I have a vinyl from '91 and that song (which doesn't belong) wasn't there.

    Likely :)

Anyway, my least favorite song from the album is "Raisans," which seems to be quite appreciated and often played live. I've always idolized "Lode" by Lou Barlow, a piece that steps away from the song structure to explore a beautiful musical progression throughout.

I bought it in '90, there were nine pieces plus a cover of Peter Frampton, and my friend had a 7-inch with Just Like Heaven, which is why I ordered Dinosaur Jr and Surfer Rosa by the Pixies from Sweet Music in Salsomaggiore. I think we’re the same age. My memory is starting to fade a bit. (45)

By the way, @[hjhhjiji], I haven't gotten back to you about listening to Neil Young regarding his influence on DJs... in fact, I've listened to all four suggested albums, some more than once, but in the end, I set them aside without making a decision... in short, the albums are undoubtedly beautiful and I do find some affinities, especially with the post-Barlow DJs, but that's not the reason I've always listened to the DJs.
  • hjhhjij
    28 feb 18
It's true that there's a lot of Young in the '90s albums, probably even more (as proof that he can say whatever he wants, but J was definitely heavily influenced by Nello, certainly more than Lou), but I repeat there are very strong affinities in some tracks even from the debut, for example. I don't know what you like to listen to from the Dinosaur, but in the end, it's impossible not to find some similarities anyway. Most of all, I'm glad if you didn't know Young and you liked those albums, aside from the Dinosaur.

I don't know all of their discography but almost. As Hjhhjij says, the next Electro Shock-Blues is always ready with a handkerchief. I know the cover of Beautiful Freak very well because I own the album and used it as an avatar on Deb for a while, then removed it because it was a bit unsettling. The Eels-Everett with Sparklehorse-Linkous and Smog-Callahan are the top of indie singer-songwriters from the nineties and early 2000s. At least for me.

Wonderful album 'Electro-shock blues', I’m listening to it right now. I have this flaw that at first I don’t pay much attention to the lyrics, but the music itself doesn’t seem that tearful to me.

I know, it's Everett's infamous trick. A delicate or, after all, not depressing (when it's not "sunny") tune over lyrics that... Go read something about what the album is about. Punch to the gut incoming.
  • hjhhjij
    28 feb 18
The lyrics and music on this album are inevitably a whole much more than in his other ones. Anyway, my favorite Eels album remains the third, eh, "Daisies of the Galaxies."

Ridley Scott: Alien: Covenant

It's embarrassing that for the second time after "Prometheus," Ridley Scott keeps serving us the same story, the same reheated soup: a ship with a frozen crew is lured to an unknown planet where the alien awaits them. The minor variations on the theme do not make the film more appealing.
