Lana Del Rey: Born To Die
CD Audio I have it ★★★★
"Born to Die" is Born To Die serves as a perfect bridge between the experimental creativity of the "dark" indie-underground corners and the high-quality commerciality of mainstream pop. An album that oozes "Retromania" from every pore, it features references to 1950s movie soundtracks and tributes to film icons like James Dean. There’s a bit of gangster style reminiscent of Nancy Sinatra, but also a constant homage to Madonna and Marianne Faithfull. In short, a nice cocktail of elements capable of capturing both the general audience and the more "alternative" crowd. Yet, beyond all the smoke and mirrors of gossip that surrounds it, this album is a collection of respectable songs: sketches of retro orchestral pop, with sprinkles of electronics and hip hop here and there. Add a touch of Portishead’s trip-hop and you’ve got it all.

it's his most valid album, he won't reach these levels again, not even the last one, which didn't impress me at all. born to die is obviously not a masterpiece, but it's a well-crafted pop album, as one wouldn't have expected in 2012.

For me (and I emphasize for me so no one gets offended, it’s a matter of taste, etc.) it's so terrible that it bothers me to see Nancy and Marianne mentioned in here. Extremely disgusting. Now, please don’t give me the list of popular people who are worse than her; I’m not interested :)

Lana Del Rey is the Madonna of depression pop, or however you want to call it. She’s not the first to do what she does; she’s the one who manages to do it with a visual impact that surpasses everyone. Her essence, for me, is about appearing naturally contrived, within a context that is so constructed and plasticized that it stuns and attracts many at the same time. Look at the latest video, the one with the house by the sea and the helicopter arriving. Talent? Yes, there's about 10-20% of everything that’s been praised.
I'll have the pavement redone by the time you return.

an album that forces anyone who plays hard rock to confront it. Perhaps never again would a Led Zeppelin album achieve such overall perfection.
  • Six exceptional tracks + 2 normal ones, not groundbreaking.
I would have organized the tracklist slightly differently to have a somewhat symmetrical sequence for each side of the LP: a brutal rock-blues opening and ear-splitting ("Rock'n'roll" leading the way and "Black Dog" at the start of side B), followed by a rock-funky or "oriental" episode ("Misty Mountain Hop" on one side and "Four Sticks" on the other, the two "normal" episodes, which in reality come consecutively on the second side, slightly slowing down the ecstasy of the listening experience).
Then, the two super ballads, left exactly where they are: the romantic/apocalyptic/English folk one ("Battle of Evermore") on side A and the introspective/American folk one ("Going to California") on side B, and finally the two closing tracks as they already are, with the two unheard masterpieces so differently sublime, the first "Stairway" with its twists from intimate folk to lyrical ballad to epic fanfare to a guitar solo jubilation to desperate hard rock to calmness, the second epitome of apocalyptic blues, stunning, detonating.
What an album! It makes me want to cry at the thought.

The Battisti - Mogol era appeals to me entirely, even if in this case the tracklist is among those that engage me the least, simply because I consider the other albums a step above this one. For the rest, this is also an excellent work...

What a great artist Lucio Battisti! Thanks to him, Mogol took far more credit than he actually deserved (Mogol is a good lyricist and nothing more)... Lucio Battisti... so "national-popular" that he is highly underrated.

The jagged shadow of the Flaming Lips hovers over all the songs on the album, and the band led by Wayne Coyne undoubtedly remains one of the most immediate references for this group, especially given the numerous nods to the vaporous and dreamy psychedelia of the mid-Sixties.

Come on, it was a nice little disc. Light, without any big pretensions, but with at least two or three really catchy songs. Maybe the comparison with the Flaming is a bit bold, but as a pop disc for an alternative club, it's not bad at all.

Morgan is a talented artist, one of the few in Italy who still conceives of music as a work of art.

"one of the very few in Italy who still sees music as a work of art" and to be consistent with his work, he prostitutes himself in marketing by promoting music made by good voices and horrifying jingles. One is free to do whatever he wants with his life, and if Morgan wants to be a TV host, good for him. But don’t come to me saying he respects music. To be able to respect something, one must first be humble. Someone who remakes "non al denaro non all'amore né al cielo" forgot humility up his ass yesterday, and in the meantime, he’s already shat it out and flushed it down the toilet.

among other things, he’s a conceited person in an almost gratuitous way: maybe he has some talent, but he should show it, for Christ’s sake. Because neither in Blue Vertigo nor in his singles have I ever found anything that even comes close to art. Sometimes he has a beautiful voice, which unfortunately reminds me of his douchey face, and so that becomes pretty unbearable too. Then there’s someone who goes on TV saying that smoking weed is good, disregarding personal issues (in the sense that maybe he didn’t do it for publicity, always thinking the worst here) is someone that can easily be ignored, he’s absolutely useless to society. Totally useless, seriously.

I completely agree with what you wrote, except for the bluvertigo issue, but let's not forget that he has always defined himself as a bit of a dandy, and the dandy par excellence is a vain person, and who better than television can bring out this side of a man. I'm not justifying him, it's just the reality of the situation. Anyway, this CD is an excellent one; I’m not even considering the remake of De André's album.

the blues
Upon hearing the first thundering beats that support the capers of bluegrass banjo, the vigorous strumming, the hoarse, passionate intonation at the end of the title track that introduces the album, two things are clear: that Mumford And Sons "are not here to mess around" rock wave.

Natalie Merchant: Motherland
CD Audio I have it ★★★★
Setting to music today's social and political twists is no easy task, given the complex web of the global situation. Therefore, completing such a work without falling into rhetoric or triviality requires an analytical capacity expressible only through metaphorical language. Natalie Merchant, former leader of 10,000 Maniacs, has always possessed this aptitude, which, combined with a voice that is both velvety and deep, elevates her to the conscience of the country. The songs do not directly point to specific facts, but focus their exploration within the human and American soul: "Motherland."
