Miles Davis: Bitches Brew
CD Audio I have it ★★★★★
I'm not familiar with jazz; I know little to nothing about this musical genre, and I admit my ignorance on the subject. I recently acquired this record, but after a few attentive listens, I found it fascinating, perhaps even more than Kind of Blue. I don't know if I'm right or not; it's just a gut feeling...

They are truly two different and very distant worlds, this and "Kind of Blue." This is not Jazz, it's JAZZ-ROCK, or rather it's not... the Whole, it's Jazz, Rock, Psychedelia, Black Africa and ancestral, a new Big Bang, get ready to lose yourself in it again.

in agreement with hjhhjij, this is total, and there are decent live performances from that period. kind of blue is more classic jazz.

The most beautiful work, in my opinion, by the band of West and Pappalardi. All great songs, but above all, the magnificent "Theme For An Imaginary Western," written by the friend Jack Bruce and Pete Brown...

I'm usually not a fan of "the best of" compilations, but this is practically perfect for anyone looking to get closer to a giant like Waters. A showcase of great blues songs that ooze dust and sweat, his golden age...

What can I say.. with Massey Hall '71 being my favorite live performance by the crazy Canadian..

In the midst of the '80s, Cave resurrects the cursed "mood" of Delta Blues. "Knockin on Joe" is perhaps the masterpiece of his career. But how can one not mention "Blind Lemon Jefferson," "Tupelo," or "Long Train Suffering"?
  • hjhhjij
    28 sep 14
Total, but you know how I feel about Cave.
  • De...Marga...
    29 sep 14
Allow me one single remark: the atmosphere of the album is not beautiful at all, quite the opposite. This is just my feeling that I've always had while listening to the album. I consider the atmosphere to be funereal.
  • hjhhjij
    29 sep 14
That's precisely why I agree with hell on the "beautiful" atmosphere. Beautiful to say "cool, charming, etc." From a record so Bluesy (from the Delta and the filthy black folks from the '20s to the '50s) and so dark and sick, a "beautiful" atmosphere is also a funereal atmosphere; otherwise, what would be the point?
  • De...Marga...
    29 sep 14
You know better than I do the story of the album, funereal indeed from its title (and there's no need to mention the reference); Cave is immersed in a phase of his life that is nothing short of troubled for reasons you also know well. For this reason, from my point of view, I don't find it right to associate the word "beautiful" with the atmospheres of the album. That it is a masterpiece is undeniable.
  • hjhhjij
    29 sep 14
I completely understand your point of view, but I believe hell intended the thing with a different nuance, that is, the "beautiful" understood as "what is pleasing" even if it's something dark and gloomy in the atmosphere and intentions, so "beautiful" should be understood in this sense. Speaking of the atmosphere, the mood of the album, and the period of intense dependence of Cave and company, the word Berlin has a devastating resonance here; this city is miraculous when it comes to darkness, toxic and black, especially in those years... With Blixa as a guide and connecting thread. The album is one of my all-time favorites, so I won't even get into it...

The last part of your comment gave me the chills.... You really are a good boy. I remember the Nick and the Bad Seeds concert in Milan in 1994: do you think I had fun?
  • hjhhjij
    29 sep 14
I would say that's enough :) Was 1994 the "Let Love In" tour? It was already another Cave, but still of great quality. The live show from 1993, although Cave was already on the path of detoxification and artistic "redemption," is beautiful. If someone like him came to my area, I would go see him without a second thought.
  • De...Marga...
    29 sep 14
Exactly, it was the Let Love In tour (another great album). At the Palalido in Milan, in June, scorching heat. I was right at the front, near the right side of the stage. I see them coming up on stage from a side staircase, just a few meters from where I’m standing. I call Nick and greet him; he turns around, staggers over to me, and hugs me like an old friend: tall and thin to the point of being alarming. This is another memory I will cherish forever from a WONDERFUL concert. Then they got on stage, and the real apocalypse began.............................. ....... I’ll stop here or I’ll explode with joy.

Come on, the hug with Cave no :D What a splendid moment that concert was, I can hardly believe it... What a blast.
  • De...Marga...
    29 sep 14
I give you my word it went like this!!! And I’ll tell you more because my memory reminded me of another moment from the concert: at the beginning, Nick and Blixa were so "out of it" that they could barely stand. But all of this made the concert even more "deep." And due to the intense heat, a very unfortunate note, almost at the end, my then-girlfriend Marina fainted. Fortunately, she recovered quickly in the infirmary. It's a concert I will never forget, even for this reason.

This flashback from De Marga about a Cave concert in '94 is beautiful (I envy you; you’ve seen many iconic figures of popular music from the last 50 years: Dylan, Van Morrison, definitely Dire Straits, Nick Cave, Bruce Springsteen, U2, whom I don’t like, but that’s another story...)... anyway, I understand hellraiser’s tastes, but it’s a shame to see a masterpiece like this get 4 “balls” (just read the lyrics, not to mention the amazing arrangements...)... well, an album like this can only be truly appreciated after multiple listens and, above all, with a full willingness to embrace all this darkness...

@hellraise: I completely understood your reference and your use of the term beautiful. Mine was just a "vent" because I've always associated Nick's early works, let's say up to "Tender Pray" from 1988, with darkness and therefore with the color black. That’s why I found the term unsuitable for my thoughts; just look at the cover with the image of the Australian that speaks for itself. @bluesboy94: the only band among those you mentioned that I haven't seen is Dire Straits, and I regret it more than ever. Best wishes to everyone and good things.

In any case, I agree with bluesboy that for me this is one of those albums that even five stars seem too few, but hell has only recently discovered it and is appreciating it a lot, so what more can you want from life? Maybe it isn't even the conception of Blues that hell is most connected to, unlike myself, for example.
  • De...Marga...
    30 sep 14
@hjhhjij: the covers you mention are more terrifying and toxic than ever. But right now I'm looking for the millionth time at the one for "The First Born Is Dead" (I’ll note that the title of the work has the words First Born separated, not joined like on the debaser). That "detached" face from the rest of the body haunts me: the black background merges with the black of NICK's sweater, making his face ghostly, like a non-living entity. The right hand gripping a cigarette that seems to burn out while I observe it... A claustrophobic feeling that pushes me to stop here....................My goodness.
  • hjhhjij
    30 sep 14
But yes, this cover is beautiful and striking like the others, more "subtle" in a refined and creeping darkness (eh?) a bit like Rowland Howard's pieces on the Birthday Party records. It’s a great dark cover, DeMa, nothing to say.

I quote a guy from the capital; much respect to NICK... but to you as well, of course. Have you listened to The Evens?
Very beautiful, very "particular." I was quite struck by "Muddy Waters," a touching interpretation by Cave and excellent arrangements, "Long Black Veil," and "All Tomorrow's Parties" by the legendary Velvet. They may still be covers of great songs, but they are very carefully chosen and performed in a completely personal way, not just by Cave but by the whole band. Excellent.

  • hellraiser
    25 oct 14
I highly recommend "Spirit," "The Family That Plays Together," and "Twelve Dreams..." by Spirit, which are the crème de la crème. Excellent jazz, rock, and psychedelia. "Clear" from '69 is not as good as the others but passable, then after 1971, the breakup and farewell of Andes and Ferguson. Grab these and skip the rest, which is mostly lackluster. Beautifully done is Kapt. Kopter & The Fabulous Twirly Birds, the first solo album from California, more muscular and rock-oriented but still featuring some great tracks...

Hi Simone, for once let's abandon the nicknames; if I remember correctly, you bought it last Sunday in Cuneo along with another rather interesting disc!!! Returning to Nick, a unique record, with spine-tingling interpretations of unique songs in their own right; I always like to focus on those details that are never too highlighted: the cover showing Nick composed, elegant apart from a hairstyle typical of the period and frankly unwatchable. The version of Hey Joe, do I need to write the author?, my favorite track from an excellent album.

An odyssey in space, a new planet for a new life. All of this conceived by the mind of Paul Kantner, who changes the name of his famous band and creates this excellent album, aided by the wonderful Grace Slick and exceptional guests such as Garcia, CSN, and many others. For me, this is a masterpiece, the first piece of the swan song of the Bay Area of the sixties at the beginning of the '70s. Then there will be Crosby's "If I Could" (which featured a ton of musicians from the scene, it was a wild jumble) and Garcia's solo debut. In between, the celebratory Joni of "Woodstock" and then Young's "Ambulance Blues," from Canadian to Canadian, from celebration to the tombstone of an era.

Here, I've never liked them. Except for this album, which I have always found beautiful. Here they are finally stripped of a certain pompousness and reduced to the bone… more raw, electric, visceral… and free to experiment. This direction will partly be maintained on 'No Code', although I already like it much less… then they returned to the arenas. What a shame…

I received it only yesterday, but I had the chance to listen to it once, and very attentively. Truly an excellent job, nothing to say, an artist with a capital A without a doubt, both with VDGG and as a soloist. After three or four listens, I can say it's an excellent album; Hammill proves to be a great artist with talent to spare. It's a unique album, with sounds I'm not very accustomed to but it's beautiful, especially the splendid "If I Could," my favorite of the bunch. Here, my only doubt is how and if you would digest the sounds of the album, but in the end, I was sure that the quality of the tracks would prevail in your judgment :) Then 4 or 5, what does it matter? Something totally different from everything he had done before. An artist in constant evolution, always with great quality and plenty of ideas. A band that should have and could have been luckier, instead disappeared after this one work from '70. "Black Sheep of the Family" remains their most famous track, later covered by Blackmore for his debut with Rainbow, but the compositional level remains very high in almost all the tracks...

It's not a masterpiece, but it is certainly a small and valid prog gem worth rediscovering. Well done.

Yes, even without a guitarist they manage to create a rich and rock sound, especially thanks to the keyboard, reminiscent of the sounds created, for example, by Lord in Purple...

They are from London, but with their music, you can easily find yourself sitting in meditation in a temple by the banks of the Ganges. Peace and harmony... For me, along with the previous "In Blissful Company," their best work.

It had been years since I last listened to it in full; today I gave it a thorough listen again, still a great masterpiece, flawless. Beautiful.

Good debut album, but the real acclaim will come later with gems like The Bends and Ok Computer, which are much more complete and varied. Just Creep, the well-known hit single, is worth the entire ticket, but there are also good tracks on this album...

Imagine that I even resold this, I didn't like it that much, but then again, as you say, the triple threat will come: The Bends, OK Computer, Kid A, and I'll add Amnesiac and Hail to the Thief as well.

No, this doesn't say anything to me. Instead, I reassessed The Bends, a good album. I really like the trilogy from 1997 to 2001; they're three excellent albums. Then they go back to not saying anything to me anymore.

The first cigarette I smoked was while listening to this album, just released, with a friend. Today, doing the math—102,200 cigarettes later, averaging 20 a day—I listened to it in full again after 14 years and found it shining like never before, really beautiful, especially Paranoid Android, hard and melodic at the same time... (poor lungs...)

I started smoking before it was released. Since the first listen in '97, not much has changed: there are the famous tracks I like, some less so. Anyway, it's not among my favorite listens, it’s not my genre. However, it's one of their best. I stopped at the narcoleptic Hail to the Thief :)

I listened to it again today on my way back from the sea, after years of not hearing it anymore.. It’s still beautiful.. Fortunately, compared to back then, I’ve quit smoking. Exit music (for a film) is my favorite.. In fact, I’ll add it to my listening list now!

I started in '96, I stopped in 2003, I restarted in 2006, and I still smoke today (I have to die of something). I listened to Ok Computer on Friday; it had been a while since I last did, but it’s still like the first time, and it reminded me of this OK Computer - Radiohead - Recensione di condor I also love the albums that followed, unlike Psycho, but you never forget your first love!

It's amazing the number of users who have listened to the album in the last few days; even in the early afternoon in the new chat, which I've finally figured out how it works, Flo and I were listening to it at about the same song; one more reason, in my opinion, to define this important work by the English boys as a sound monument. It may seem trivial, but my favorite track remains, since 1997, No Surprises. Great album and great comeback from you, dear Hellraiser!!!!

It's a shame to have waited all these years to fully savor it again. Lately, I've been rediscovering many albums from the '90s that I own but haven't listened to in ages, and this has taken me back to my 14 years, the golden years... then it's always a fantastic album, no doubt about it. How do you enter the chat? If someone explains it to me, I'll be grateful...

Their debut remains a raw and devastating masterpiece; do you get mad if I say that the continuation of their career has never really grabbed me? Of course, replicating a bomb like the self-titled first album wasn't easy.
After his experience with the Spirits, the young Randy California launches a new interesting project with the godfather and drummer Ed Cassidy and bassist Larry "Fuzzy" Knight. The result: a great album of covers/original songs, which didn’t receive much acclaim from critics but showcases all the excellent qualities of the musicians...

I had the chance to listen to it properly a few days ago on the train after a long time, still a great record, an excellent debut for the band from Athens. ROD STEWART: GASOLINE ALLEY
CD Audio I have it ★★★★
Stewart has always been a very controversial artist; personally, I hate his period from '76 onwards, where he transformed from an excellent interpreter and rocker into a pop phenomenon. However, his English period with the 5 albums for Mercury (1969-1975) is great; fantastic tracks, great live performances, and this album is the truest demonstration of that.
Rod Stewart: Never a Dull Moment
Vinile I have it ★★★★★
It's always nice to listen to this album again, the last of a perfect "trilogy," even though "An Old Raincoat.." and "Smiler" open and close a remarkable five years. This stands as a testament to a great frontman and a great voice from past decades, during the "Mercury" period, his best ever.

I’m honest: this is one of the most beautiful "singer-songwriter" albums of all time, not a second wasted; I struggle to say which is the best song among the four (one day I want to say "Me and my woman," another day "Same old rock," and yet another "Hors d'Ouvres"). It pains me to admit, if this album had been written by an icon of songwriting like Dylan, it would be in every ranking of the greatest albums of all time in every magazine (but never mind, most magazines are abominable)... in short, it would be given more recognition... instead, it was written by Roy Harper, a cult artist who did everything to avoid compromises and fame. Five stars are even too few for this masterpiece.

You are absolutely right. The only ones who appreciated him back then were a few colleagues, just think of the Zeps who dedicated "Hats Off (To Roy Harper)" to him, or the Pink Floyd, who called him to sing in "Have a Cigar" (without even paying or thanking him, but that was typical of Waters...). It's only in recent times that he has been reassessed, too late now, but at least he has always been a person consistent with his own ideas, both musical and in life. I could never really listen to his last one from a couple of years ago, do you know anything about it?

Among Roy Harper's friends (74 years old) are Jimmy Page, Dave Gilmour, Paul McCartney, Keith Emerson, Bill Bruford, Bert Jansch, Mike Oldfield, Kate Bush, Pete Townshend, and Keith Moon, and for anyone else, this would have meant a tremendous career. However, Roy has frequently faced jail and mental institutions, and he has released music on about ten different labels (about ten years with Harvest thanks to Gilmour's intervention, which is why they made a mutual appearance in 1975; Waters had nothing to do with it and was even against it). I've heard he's going through a tough time, but he's truly a survivor.
  • bluesboy94

The esteem that all the greatest names in English rock pay to Harper can be linked (more for the excellent quality of the songs; I know all his albums from 1966 to 1977 and none of them is less than decent, and for his skill as an acoustic guitarist) especially to the character who is free from conventions and idiosyncratic towards the music industry... that said: "Hats Off (To Roy Harper)!"

Great album. I actually prefer the next one, "Chicken Skin Music." Then "Show Time" will come to wrap up an incredible trilogy.
Immense artist, here at the peak of her career. Extraordinary album that carries on the artistic journey begun with Fairport and Fotheringay, often overshadowed by the subsequent "Sandy" but equally excellent. Then there are the guitar intertwining of her faithful Thompson...

Santana has never been a favorite of mine (except for the first and Abraxas, phenomenal albums), but this live recording, bought at least three years ago and never listened to, is surprising. Here, Carlos, polished and "mystical," showcases all his skills, supported by a kick-ass band. A great listen...

it suffers a bit from drag in some parts, I would say especially the B side of the second record (I’m referring to the vinyl, I don’t know how the tracks are distributed on CD)... in short, the part with Mantra, then Kyoto, the drum solo... however, for the rest, it remains an extraordinary live performance, the third record is perfection, the tracks from Abraxas and Santana III are all exceptional. Back in the day, only Chicago, I think, could afford to release TRIPLE live albums of this level.

I highly recommend this album. Excellent audio, extraordinary tracks ranging from the self-titled first one to Fourth, with Third almost completely represented, and a version of Moon in June that I won't spoil for you. There's also BBC Radio 1971-1974, but since I'm not familiar with the band during that specific period and it's not very reasonably priced, I decided to pass. Check out what I'm listening to tonight; in my opinion, the Mad River album is one to fall in love with, it's right up your alley.. have a good evening, until next time..
