Salmo: Midnite

Perhaps the worst album by the Sardinian rapper, while S.A.L.M.O. remains in my top.

I know it, I know Hellvisback by heart, not to mention that I was at the related concert ;)
The most hated album by those who have not understood the meaning of punk and all light music.
Skiantos: Kinotto
CD Audio I have it ★★★★★
Dedicated to Extro91. An incredible masterpiece, featuring exceptional killer tracks like Mi piaccon le sbarbine, Non ti sopporto più, Kakkole, Gelati, Kinotto, etc. Add a Paolo Tofani to the team and the masterpiece is ready.

    This is deadly.
  • I prefer "Monotono" but this is also a great record. (I didn't know Tofani played on it)
Slint: Spiderland
CD Audio I have it ★★★★★
Wavelike and corpuscular, just like light. They took the masterpieces of hardcore, fused them together, and allowed the resulting mixture to cool. The guitar-bass-drum harmony is perhaps the finest ever heard, but even the silences themselves are functional. Perfect in every part, the biggest black hole in the history of rock, and through all of this, tracks like Washer have been giving me chills for years. Among the most beautiful albums of all time.

If you like "dead" music, also check out the works of For Carnation with Brian McMahan. In particular, the compilation "Promised Works," which contains the first two EPs, should be easy to find. Returning to "Spiderland," the only flaw for me is the final explosion of "Good Morning, Captain," which is incredibly enjoyable but slightly tarnishes the album's reputation. What edition do you have? The cd/dvd one with the documentary?
  • pana
    23 nov 14
Bought just today for six euros at a record fair. It's without a DVD, I bought it used and the cover is a bit damaged, I believe it's a first edition (do you know if it was released on CD simultaneously with the vinyl?) I’ve already heard of For Carnation and I will definitely give them a try, thank you.
  • fuggitivo
    23 nov 14
Yes, both the CD and LP were released the same year. As for the CD, I believe the American edition from '91 is extremely hard to find here in Italy. There's the '95 edition (which I have) and it was the most common before it was reissued in 2014. In terms of sound, there's no comparison; the digipack from 2014 is better, which I found separately from the vinyl in France (I’ve never seen it here). And then in the documentary, you can see them as kids rehearsing "Good Morning, Captain". Mind-blowing stuff.

How I wish I could see them! You know, I've been worshiping this album for years, ever since I was only listening to Pink Floyd and Genesis. But I don't have the DVD. I wouldn't know which edition it is (definitely not the 2014 one).
  • fuggitivo
    23 nov 14
Come on, I won't bring you down. 6 euros is a great price. And it's always better to keep a copy of the original recording, you never know what mess they might make with the remasters.
  • fuggitivo

It’s written on the back of the CD. On my copy, it’s at the bottom right. First edition 1991. Ristampa del 1995. For Touch & Go. Seeing them live would be amazing, but I would prefer in one of those small venues with few people. The magic is better preserved that way. I feel like an ass recommending you these things when you’ve known them longer than I have, but take a look here, it’s an excerpt from the documentary on YouTube:

Yes, it says 1991 Touch And Go records. But sometimes they don't write the release date even for reissues, do they?
  • fuggitivo
    23 nov 14
That always, along with the date of the reprint (if it's a reprint). But if you say so, you have the original, yes.
  • pana

Oh, I feel very proud! It's definitely the most valuable record in my collection.

But no, the original CD is better! I'm an idiot, sorry pana.
Soft Machine: Third

A gigantic monument that leaves no room for doubt: masterpiece. Moon in June reaches for the stars, but the last suite is no less impressive.

I confirm, sometimes you hold back a bit because "I don't really feel like listening to a four-suite album" and so on... but it's truly a giant, and not even an album that inaccessible. The tracks are from another planet (Earth's twin? who knows ;), my slight preference goes to the last two.
Sonic Youth: Confusion Is Sex

The title is emblematic, a dense and distorted sound that is initially difficult to decipher, but it has the intensity and charm unique to the best albums. Perhaps the peak of the band, a masterpiece and a milestone.

Wild and dark, the children of No-Wave burst onto the NYC music scene. I've always said: they were great until 2002, perfect until 1988, but this and "Bad Moon Rising" are the best of the best. (Also listen to the early EPs pana, they’re great).

The one from 1982, right? Yes, that's exactly what I meant. The EP is good, but above all, there's "The Burning Spear," which I would say is a nice declaration of intent considering what they use as instrumentation, and how.

I can't listen to "Daydream Nation," it's too challenging. Completely the opposite of "Bad Moon Rising," which I loved... and nothing... I MUST delve deeper, just to get a better idea of this band, which I see caught between a mainstream audience and a sound that rejects it.

Sonic Youth: Daydream Nation
CD Audio I have it ★★★★★
The fact that this may not be the group's best album is the best proof of how extraordinary SY were. Monumental yet always inspired, masterpieces from start to finish: Teenage Riot, Cross The Breeze, Total Trash, Candle, Trilogy - perfect tracks. Because in the '80s, good music wasn’t made.
  • hjhhjij

On "Cross the Breeze" I die every time, it's too beautiful. And the homage to Joni Mitchell? And the pop melody in the first part of "Total Trash"? And "Candle"? Besides "Trilogy," of course...

After listening to it several times, and not being used to this kind of music, I can say it's an excellent album. I have the deluxe version (I was looking for the normal one to spend less, but oh well) which also includes a live recording from their second album; I must say it's better than the studio version, with a more distorted and animalistic sound…

@pana: yes, on the live album, track 16/19, while on the first album there’s a bonus track, Eric's Trip. Purchased on the advice of DeMa and Hj, spent 22 euros but I don't regret it, even though I personally prefer other genres. Great album.

I have that unique one but I downloaded the deluxe live version (live tracks from 1988-1989); among the 4 covers, I was very intrigued by the one by Mudhoney, while there obviously had to be a cover of the master Neil, one of the guiding lines of Sonic Youth (especially after "Bad Moon Rising"). "The Sprawl" mad, is one of the most extraordinary examples of dystopian science fiction in notes.

Sonic Youth: Bad Moon Rising

A masterpiece, not the first and certainly not the last. Their most "dead," more desolate album. Society Is A Hole, I Love Her All The Time, I'm Insane, and then Lunch in the grand finale, too beautiful.

Steely Dan: Can't Buy A Thrill

Excellent debut.
Steely Dan: Pretzel Logic
CD Audio I have it ★★★★★
One of their most complete albums. The opening quintet, in particular, is incredible, and the cover of "East St Louis Toodle-oo" is outstanding. Barrytown has always been with me.
Steely Dan: Gaucho

And here they had become a bit bourgeois, but when the class lightning strikes (Gaucho, Third World Man) they remain irresistible.

Masterpiece of pop-fusion music. Absurd that it is not etched in everyone’s memory.
Steely Dan: Katy Lied

Great album of refined pop. Of course, we're not quite at masterpiece level yet...

The pages of resistance are honored in this sublime folk-prog, a cornerstone of rock in opposition. Great emotions, especially in Stalingrado and Dante by Nanni.
Syd Barrett: Barrett

Intriguing epitaph of a now-finished artist, better than the predecessor.
Syd Barrett: The Madcap Laughs

In my opinion, even the useless has something incredible among the grooves of this vinyl! The thought you have for this, however, for me is worth for the next one.
