Frank Zappa: Sleep Dirt
CD Audio I have it ★★
I don't like it, it's understandable that it wasn't published the way Z. would have wanted. In the second part, it gets lost in frankly avoidable guitar work...

I don't know this one by Zappa. What period is it from?
  • pana
    7 dec 14
'79 is the second chapter of a triptych alongside the earlier Studio Tan (better) and the later Orchestral Favourites. It was published against Zappa's wishes, who wanted to combine some of the tracks from these three albums and others into a single project (namely the Lather released in 1996).
  • hjhhjij
    7 dec 14
They have been released at the behest of the record label, in fact they contain all tracks recorded between '74 and '76, if not even earlier. Well, I would say I agree, although I like it a bit more than you do. But if we look at Zappa's discography, even just from the '70s, this is a bit pointless—nice, but pointless.
  • pana
    7 dec 14
Sure: I want to emphasize that for me anyway, the Lather from '96 is actually nice, I mean the idea together was good.
  • hjhhjij
    7 dec 14
I don't know that one, the posthumous Zappa I don't know shit about, not for nothing but it’s way too much stuff and I don't know where to start. Maybe I’ll start with this project here.
  • pana
    7 dec 14
I also know little, but that I do. I really miss the latest Zappa a lot. Maybe I'm not motivated to delve into that part of his production, because the Zappa I adore is essentially that of the trilogy Uncle - Hot Rats - Burnt Weeny. Then there's also Absolutely, but I'm not that attached to it.
  • hjhhjij
    7 dec 14
"Uncle - Hot Rats - Burnt Weeny" Yeah, right. I also love the early albums by the Mothers of Invention. And those up until 1975. But that "your" triptych is the best (along with Absolutely, to which I'm VERY attached).

for me it’s his masterpiece! There isn’t a single wasted minute. Exuberantly performed and impeccably composed. Endless jokes and gags. A unique brilliance from start to finish.

Better than Waka. Cletus is super cool!

We are there with Waka, the level is the same, maybe Wazzoo seems more enjoyable and less challenging.

Between moments of genius and moments of boredom. The best is the long "Big Swifty" for me.

Fugazi: Repeater + 3 Songs
CD Audio I have it ★★★★★
I took a lifetime, but it was worth it. An amazing album, certainly not the easiest in the punk saga. Turnover, Repeater (what a bass line!), Blueprint, Sieve Fisted Find, Shut The Door so great they bring tears to your eyes. Epoch-making.

The album is pretty disappointing (maybe 2 or 3 tracks I like) but I couldn't not buy it, if only for what it gave me with the first two mixtapes.
Gemitaiz: Nonostante Tutto
CD Audio I have it ★★
Genesis: Seconds Out
CD Audio I have it ★★★★
Live played at times excellently, in many cases better than the studio tracks. The setlist overly favors the later albums at the expense of the era up to Foxtrot.
Genesis: The Lamb Lies Down on Broadway
CD Audio I have it ★★★★★
A great and highly successful rock work. Especially frightening is disc 1, with the title track, back in NYC, In The Cage, Carpet Crawlers, The Chamber. Then in the second there's Anyway...
Genesis: A Trick Of The Tail
CD Audio I have it ★★★★
In addition to more pop tracks (Ripples, Entangled), the new Genesis add excellent songs that are worthy of their masterpieces (Dance, Mad Man Moon).
Genesis: From Genesis To Revelation

At least spontaneous and serene. For me, it's not something to discard.

Hardcore. Nothing more to say.
Four but abundant, there are beautiful pieces like "The Seizure of Power," "An Idea," "Liberty."
Inspired masterpiece of Prog-Psych-Jazz-Rock-Pop.
Hüsker Dü: Warehouse: Songs and Stories
CD Audio I have it ★★★★★
One of the most beautiful albums of the '80s. Not as daring as Zen Arcade, but with pop-rock tracks of overwhelming beauty (Ice Cold Ice, Standing In The Rain, Friend You've Got To Fall, and She's A Woman (And Now He's A Man)) above all.

Great album that marks the end of the friendship between Bob and Grant; I may have said it many times before, but for me "Zen Arcade" remains unattainable.
Il Balletto di Bronzo: YS
CD Audio I have it ★★★
An exaggerated work that attempts to imitate the masters Emerson, Lake and Palmer (clearly referenced in the titles, echoing the mammoth "Karn Evil 9") while losing their magic. The third encounter is the best, featuring an extraordinary introduction that is later revisited in the epilogue. It suffers from hubris. The effort put in by Leone, even in the lyrics, is commendable, but that singing is not for me.
  • BARRACUDA BLUE
    28 dec 14
Karn Evil 9 seems to have been released a year after this album. With all due respect, wouldn't it be more useful to avoid writing such nonsense? Debasio is already full of it. YS, on the other hand, was such a standalone work that it continues to shine with its own light.
  • pana
    28 dec 14
Regarding the date, I acknowledge the gaffe and I apologize. As for the rest, I expressed personal opinions which therefore cannot be classified as nonsense.
  • BARRACUDA BLUE
    28 dec 14
Ys is heavily influenced by Arcade Fire, I am Giuseppe Garibaldi and Debaser is Noah's Ark.....personal opinions are not up for discussion.
  • Safet Osmanovic
    28 dec 14
What are the ELP up to with magic? Sorry, but I hate them deep down. The album in question sometimes drives me crazy, other times I would throw it out the window, so I would say I haven't really formed an opinion yet.
  • pana
    28 dec 14
Well, I absolutely love the first 5 albums by ELP, as well as the live one, and I also quite like the first Works. Barracuda: if you want, I’ll give it a 5 just for you. The fact that you are Garibaldi is not an opinion, it’s a fact (false, I presume).
  • BARRACUDA BLUE
    28 dec 14
Everyone has the right to give any work the rating they want, but an album like this risks not being understood due to its complexity: it's like throwing together King Crimson, Magma, Mothers Of Invention, and Henry Cow into one pot just because they're "complex." Ys is the classic art record made solely for the love of art; few understood it upon its release, and after over 40 years, nothing has changed, nor am I Giuseppe Garibaldi to convince a thousand followers to join me in unraveling the mystery.
  • pana
    28 dec 14
But I like Crimson, Magma, Mothers, and Henry; I have no issues with complex music as such! Then, oh, I expressed my opinion on an album, and of course, one can disagree, no problem with that.
Il Rovescio Della Medaglia: Contaminazione
CD Audio I have it ★★★★
Fascinating idea (the same as EL&P with Pictures At An Exhibition): Bach meets rock music. The result is a great album.
  • SilasLang
    9 dec 14
Nah... I've never liked this album. I hate this pompous stuff. In general, I can't stand when rockers decide to play classical music. Often, that idea has just caused damage... On the other hand, I absolutely love their first album, "La Bibbia". Super tough. As for the rest, de gustibus :-)
  • Dragonstar
    9 dec 14
Oh yes, because Rage from Lingua Mortis made a mess by conceiving that album! "I hate it when rockers decide to play classical..." you’re exactly the same as "W la sperimentale," right? Long live consistency and the nonsense you spout!
  • SilasLang
    9 dec 14
Well, what do you want me to do... I like nonsense. Do you have a problem with that? "You're the same one as 'long live the experimental', right?" No, I'm the one who, if he likes something, says he likes it, and if he thinks it's crap, says it's crap. And I don't give a damn if you don't like it. Clear and simple, right?
  • Dragonstar
    9 dec 14
You came to freely throw shit on a great record. You can't act like a connoisseur if you're going to behave this way.
  • Lao Tze
    9 dec 14
I don't like this either, even though it has to be understood within its time. It wasn't done to show off as intellectuals; these were years when one had to try the never tried before. Generally, tackiness was around the corner, but there are a few happy exceptions: the Nice's 'Ars longa', for instance. I've never liked Emerson as much as in that case. That album sounds more freakish to me now than pompous. In hindsight, even 'Pictures' is more balanced compared to so many messes from ELP.
  • SilasLang
    9 dec 14
Posturing as a connoisseur? Honestly, I'm here to exchange opinions, discover new stuff, talk about music… connoisseur of what? I've loved music since I was a kid, I've been buying records since I was 7 years old, it's not my fault, nor do I want to act like a jerk. I'm just here to discuss and mess around. The record in question, I’ve known it since I was born; my father has more vinyl than I do, especially of this kind of stuff. I simply expressed my opinion on an album that I personally don’t love. I didn’t say 'IT SUCKS' and I would never allow myself to say that. But no one can ever stop me from saying that it has never convinced ME. Meanwhile, I've always adored the first album. That's all. Throwing shade? The site exists to exchange opinions, which is great. If there's something you’re passionate about that I don’t like, just know that it’s normal. If it bothers you, please… open a blog without comments and enjoy yourself as you see fit. No hard feelings.
  • Dragonstar
    9 dec 14
Well, I get it, but I also criticized The Endless River by Pink Floyd, and no one respected my opinion, not even when I said that Jackson and Madonna have value (if not strictly from a musical point of view, at least they introduced a different way of performing on stage, that too is art, and I agree that musical quality lies elsewhere). But still, in that case, a flood of criticism! Don't talk nonsense, etc... Respect must be mutual, not one-sided!

No, it's not their best as history would have it (the best is with the first two), but in my opinion, it deserves a solid 4 balls; it's much more enjoyable than Thick As A Brick, which, in the long run, can be a bit heavy. There are a couple of fillers ("Hymn 43," maybe "Wind Up"), but songs like "Mother Goose," "Cross Eyed Mary," and "Locomotive Breath" are frighteningly good. Even "Cheap Day Return" is a little gem...

In the meantime, I'm collecting it so I don't forget. I still have to get into the genre, so right now, beyond Mitchell's incredible interpretation, it means little to me. When I'm more comfortable with the jazz patterns of this work, I'll revisit it.
  • hjhhjij
    2 dec 14
Oh yes, because this is pure Jazz, this is THE Jazz album by Joni, now completely absorbed in the genre (she had even collaborated with Mingus…). You know what I’m saying? Try the live "Shadows and Light" if you don't know it yet, trust me, you'll like it more quickly. It’s Jazz, but also with the old pieces, and Mitchell leading a Jazz-Rock band made up of Pastorius, Metheny, Don Alias, Mays, and Michael Brecker! If you don’t know it, trust me.
  • pana
    2 dec 14
Yes, I know that live performance because my father is in love with it and has shown it to me a ton of times! I really like it, but it's sort of halfway between the early Joni and this one, maybe more relatable for me.

    2 dec 14
Yes, "Shadows and Light" is a bit of her definitive album (in fact, after this, the descent began, quality-wise), it summarizes all that Mitchell had been up to that point, but with an amazing band behind her. I've already expressed myself on "Hejira," "Amelia" is beautiful, and it can also happen that a tear slips out while listening to it. Anyway, have fun.

At this point: The Hissing I already know that pana knows it and likes it (but he doesn't like "The Jungle Line," what a shame) but we haven't mentioned "Don Juan's Reckless Daughter" yet, a crazy album, perhaps his most experimental, anyway a blast (and, of course, with a spine-tingling Pastorius, as well as the first appearance of one Wayne Shorter on a Joni album, then this one will come).
Nothing special

I also find it inferior to the debut, but I believe it is underrated. The title track, Cadence And Cascade, and The Devil's Triangle are, in my opinion, successful episodes in the KC discography.

  • hjhhjij
    14 jan 14
No, in fact this is not a 5 (for me), but many others are. And, above all, "Discipline" is not a 3, and this is not being lenient; it means having common sense, since it's one of their best. Then, if we want to stop at the big smile, that's fine, everyone is free.
  • rolando303
    14 jan 14
We need to be objective. Here, 5 is a bit generous. That’s what I said in my first intervention. After the big face, they made some good stuff. I don’t just stop at the big face; I have all of their work, even if nowadays my tastes have changed. I listened to this stuff ages ago.

I'm a fan of King Crimson but you can't give 5 stars to this album. If there were 6 stars at stake instead of 5, I could understand you, but if you give 5 to this record (for me it's a 4), how do you differentiate it from stuff like In the Court of the Crimson King, Red, Island, Larks' Tongues in Aspic, and Lizard?
Progressive wonder. Fascinating fresco of the court of the cremesi king.

As soon as I stripped off the plastic covering around the CD packaging, it literally disintegrated in my hands, leaving me with just the disc, the booklet, and countless sharp plastic shards.
