Genesis: And Then There Were Three
CD Audio I have it ★★★★
A record that marks the gradual detachment of the band (or what sadly remains of it) from the romantic suites typical of the seventies towards catchy and easy-listening pop. Nevertheless, it remains a really good and underrated album that at certain points offers excellent ideas.
  • Turbitt
    16 feb 19
I fully agree. A transition from pure prog to more commercial and immediate rock-pop. Transition is meant as a positive factor because here the Genesis manage to balance prog and melody, simplicity and complexity (with the former being more prevalent than the latter, to be honest...). For me, a respectable work that doesn't deserve the harsh criticisms from all the obsessed proggers that infest the web.
Genesis: Duke
CD Audio I have it ★★★★
Probably the last valid major testimony in the pop realm for our generation. Long detached from progressive sounds, the album is much more compact and polished in its pop-rock boldness. The latest jewel from Genesis that stands out with mid-high standards; the genre is pop, but it's never trivial or predictable: it's classy pop.
Genesis: Abacab
CD Audio I have it ★★★
The definitive dive of Genesis into the squalid mainstream music typical of the eighties, coated with polyphonic keyboards, filtered drums, and electronic basses. The horrid cover is enough to justify it: where are the foxes, the music boxes, the little critters from the tail trick? They are now something of the past, anachronistic for those times.
Genesis: Genesis
CD Audio I have it ★★★
“Genesis” is an album that shows a significant creative and qualitative gap between the first and second side, with an abyssal compositional distance. Despite this, the record (like the two previous ones) sells in an outrageous manner: the band is now the queen of the obvious Top Ten melody, of the soulless and empty music typical of this decade.
  • TheJargonKing
    2 jan 13
Do you really feel that way? For me, there's no difference between the first and the second side: both are subpar, with just as much skill in melodic management and just as much constructive cunning, but very little substance.
  • SydBarrett96
    2 jan 13
At least I save something, there you go, even if there are galaxies of difference between this and any album from the seventies. ;) By the way, Jargon, did you read the biography I sent you a while ago? :)
  • hjhhjij
    2 jan 13
No, but it's true, in the first part there's at least "Mama," which is a nice pop piece. Even Home by The Sea (the first part; the second part, not so much) is quite nice as a pop song. On the second side, there’s Illegal Alien, I mean, one of the ugliest songs ever.
  • SydBarrett96
    2 jan 13
The first time I began to listen to this album, when I got to the second track "Home by the Sea," I was about to declare it the best Genesis album of the '80s. Then, as I moved to the second side, everything fell apart...
  • SydBarrett96
    2 jan 13
By the way Hj, going from shit to chocolate, yesterday I dusted off some VDGG from the second reunion. You know, I think I might prefer World Record to both Still Life and Godbluff?
  • SydBarrett96
    2 jan 13
I meant to say "second phase" or "first reunion," but I ended up saying "second reunion." Oh well...
  • hjhhjij
    2 jan 13
You know you're not the only one? But you are a minority :) For me, for instance, "Still Life" is unbeatable; maybe from a melodic and introspective point of view, it’s the peak of the band, the one with the most "epic" flavor perhaps. (Then that same year, Hammill wrote "Over," but that's almost another story). Anyway, I really like World Record a lot, what can I say (quote). Meurglys III and Masks are absolute masterpieces.
  • hjhhjij
    2 jan 13
"of soul-less and empty music typical of this decade." "Anyway, but also no, eh :) The plastic and annoying patina of the '80s is only on the surface; if you scratch it away, you'll find a ton of immensely cool stuff."
  • SydBarrett96
    2 jan 13
Sure, you know that I share your opinion. I meant mainstream music ;)
  • hjhhjij
    2 jan 13
Ah yes, the mainstream music of the '80s (understood as that of various Madonna, George Michael, Duran Duran, Spandau Ballet, Genesis, the worst Collins solo work, etc.) is particularly crap.
Genesis: Invisible Touch
CD Audio I have it ★★
If "Abacab" featured acceptable ideas and "Genesis" showcased an entire side played excellently, in The Invisible Touch, almost nothing is salvaged: it's a dull, murky, cacophonically terrible album.
Genesis: Seconds Out
CD Audio I have it ★★★★★
The pillars of Hercules of this monumental live are the progressive testament of Genesis, containing all the skill and technical perfection the group had managed to achieve in the seventies. A cornerstone.
Genesis: Three Sides Live
CD Audio I have it ★★★★
Although the setlist cannot be compared to those of “Genesis Live” and especially “Seconds Out”, the album stands out mainly for the grandiose technique that has never wavered among the musicians over the years.

Perhaps they made a choice similar to that of Dire Straits regarding the setlists of the live albums "Alchemy" and "On the Night."
Genesis: We Can't Dance
CD Audio I have it ★★★★
The best album since “Duke,” very well arranged and played, and free from those truly irritating sounds that were quite noticeable in all the albums from 1981 onwards.
Gentle Giant: Octopus
CD Audio I have it ★★★★★
Half an hour of progressive delirium, filled with vocal harmonies, crazy tempo changes, and other devilish tricks; there are also melodic examples of rare sweetness (such as “Think of Me with Kindness”, which is a striking example). Perhaps my favorite Giant. 9.

Giorgio Gaber: Polli di allevamento
CD Audio I have it ★★★★★
Mr. G gets angry and writes a strongly critical, furious, and partially disillusioned show. Pieces like the title track, "Guardatemi bene," and especially "Quando è moda è moda," bear witness to this. A gut-wrenching moment comes with "La Festa" and "Eva non è ancora nata." Further applause goes to the arrangements of Battiato and Giusto Pio.

Giorgio Gaber: Anche per oggi non si vola
CD Audio I have it ★★★★★
Gaber starts to distance himself from leftist movements, beginning to sniff out the stench of great illusion ("L'odore"). This results in a performance that is much more rhetorical and disillusioned in terms of content, anticipating the themes of the next two works. Despite this, the final piece (and one of the most beautiful by Mr. G), namely "C'è solo la strada", still leaves a glimmer of hope open. "Ci siamo murati dentro" (Il febbrosario)

Beautiful, it has been an honor for me to review this album. Obviously, I can only support your definition, without any superfluous comments, since, as you may have understood, you and I think practically the same way about the shows of "Mr. G."
  • SydBarrett96
    24 dec 14
    Indeed, I totally agree. :)
Giorgio Gaber: Far finta di essere sani
CD Audio I have it ★★★★★
Bitter, ironic, poetic, GENIUS. "I'm looking for a natural gesture," "On the other side of the gate," "An emotion," and "I apologize if I talk about Maria" are absolute masterpieces. Immense double.

I have both of them, bought for about 15 euros this summer. I've been listening to it these days.
Giorgio Gaber: Libertà obbligatoria
CD Audio I have it ★★★★★
Here Mr. G begins to take stock of a generation, the sixties generation, which he deems a failure. He supports this thesis through an extensive analysis of human consciousness and the crumbling of the concept of individuality. A fundamental pivot of the Teatro Canzone. "Everywhere we have left aborted joys to rot in the corners of the streets." (Il Delirio)
  • bluesboy94

"My generation has lost" ... anyway, nice analysis on this work (unfortunately, I'm picking randomly with Gaber, so I wasn't familiar with this "Liberta Obbligatoria").
  • Dragonstar
    22 dec 14
Beautiful, although for me it’s a step below "Polli d'allevamento" and "Anche per oggi non si vola". This one, however, doesn't hold back either: "Il sogno di Gesù" is a very funny prose. My favorite songs are "I reduci" and the dramatic and reflective "Il cancro". There’s really a lot to listen to even in this show...
  • SydBarrett96
    22 dec 14
The prose on this album is also very beautiful, like "Le Carte" and "L'America." The most beautiful piece, however, I have already mentioned in the definition, including a wonderful excerpt from it.
Il Balletto di Bronzo: YS
CD Audio I have it ★★★★★
One of the most beautiful and original records of Italian progressive music, refined and peculiar in its "boldness." A chaotic, noisy, dark orgy of cacophonous keyboards, Moog, Mellotron, and various contraptions, led by that little genius (very young here, by the way) Gianni Leone, explicitly a disciple of Keith Emerson. A great album.
  • Dragonstar
    30 dec 14
Very grand and somewhat tricky, but it is absolutely right to call it a masterpiece. However, in this branch of prog, I prefer Emerson Lake & Palmer.
  • SydBarrett96

Challenging, yes, but even though it owes a lot to certain ELP atmospheres, it doesn't come off as derivative at all. :)

Great, in my opinion not a 5 but it's very pleasant to listen to....
Il Rovescio Della Medaglia: Contaminazione
CD Audio I have it ★★★★★
A niche classic of Italian Progressive, based on ideas and music by Bacalov. About half an hour of grandiloquence and rock pomp that is so close to Yes and EL&P, combined with a distinctly classical style.
Il Volo: Il Volo
CD Audio I have it ★★★
A wonderful pop album with ventures into more melodic progressive. Among other things, the same (exquisite) musicians who play here are the same as on "Anima Latina," although I find there to be almost an abyss between the two albums. 3.5.
Ivan Graziani: Ballata per 4 stagioni
CD Audio I have it ★★★★
Well-crafted album, with naive references to jazz and lyrics still tied to certain "singer-songwriter" schemes that will be set aside from the next one onward. Title track and "E sei così bella" are the real gems. 3.5-4.

I've had time to really process it. :) Anyway, I already think the next one will be better; this one is definitely cute, though.
Ivan Graziani: Nove
CD Audio I have it ★★★
Here, unfortunately, we are already in decline. The "Nine" pieces are also nice and can be listened to with pleasure, but perhaps they are too influenced by the pop chaos of the '80s.
Ivan Graziani: I Lupi
CD Audio I have it ★★★★
The first true album where his poetic style begins to take shape, that of the outcast characters from the province, with excellent production featuring his friend Venditti on piano, and the duo Calloni-Bullen on the rhythm section. A beautiful album of inspired compositions, with his first little great masterpiece standing out above all: "Lugano Addio". Long live Cross, long live Motocross!
Ivan Graziani: Agnese dolce Agnese
CD Audio I have it ★★★★★
The ultimate destination of the Grazianian poetics, in all its many facets. An incredibly inspired album where there isn't a single underwhelming moment, but honestly, I have a soft spot for the title track, "Fuoco sulla Collina," and "Canzone per Susy." A tale of music and Italian Rock.

Ballad for 4 seasons all life long. The other leaves a bittersweet taste, it’s a track that paved the way for the self-titled album of 1983, which is starting to feel a bit too cheesy for my taste. What luck, though; I've never seen anything like this around my area, but where did you find it, in a specialty store or in one of those hypermarkets where everything is piled together?

Ivan Graziani: Viaggi E Intemperie
CD Audio I have it ★★★★
Nice album, which benefits especially from the presence of that masterpiece "Firenze," but it loses a bit due to a production that isn't quite up to par (despite the involvement of a musician like Giovanni Tommaso), who perhaps tends to overshadow the "live in studio" spontaneity of the Abruzzese guitarist. Still a very good album nonetheless.

In the meantime, I’m listening to Godot again. I’m really in the mood for "acoustic guitar-voice" albums, even if here it’s just pure accompaniment, and thus a galaxy very far from the "acoustic guitar-voice" that I’m currently listening to, those by British artists, extraordinary guitarists. In short, the concept is clear, now I’m diving into Godot.

This is not among Ivan's best work. The ononimo is even more opportunistic. As for his oeuvre, I will always refer to the fortunate trilogy Lupi/Pigro/Agnese, which is more than enough to appreciate the musical legacy left to us by this extraordinary singer-songwriter.
  • SydBarrett96

Ivan Graziani: Pigro
CD Audio I have it ★★★★★
In my opinion, its peak, along with the subsequent one. Ten pieces that contain, in their entirety, the true hallmark of Ivan: adolescent desolation, the anxieties of the province, the "paradoxical" snapshots of the common man, and so much irony (right from the cover). Music at very high levels, Italian Rock has passed through here too. "And the unease grows inside like a cancer, and there's plenty to let myself go."

I maintain that it is one of the best albums of the last twenty years, thanks to the compositional quality of the songs that is beyond any comment; moments of disarming intimacy, such as the cover of Leonard Cohen, which contrasted with songs of greater sonic depth, always with that voice...the voice of Jeff...only fate defeated him...

But what does it matter that I can't sing like him? This album lacks bite and is a bit repetitive. And as for being among the best of the '90s, what nonsense, come on, in the '90s there were the Red House Painters.

My judgment is halfway between that of Mr. Money and that of Fuggitivo. Without a doubt, a great album, but I’ve never understood all this "hype." Anyway, hats off to an album that contains a track like "Mojo Pin"....it gives me chills.
  • De...Marga...
    26 mar 14
Dear Silas, the hype you mentioned was intentionally created unfortunately after Jeff's dramatic death, with the record speculation that lingered until a few years ago and I hope is finally over; although I'm convinced that sooner or later the demos of the early tapes of the first recordings made at the beginning of his career will come to light, etc... I will continue to stand up and take pictures when the notes of "Eternal Life" and "Dream Brother" spread through my stereo for many years to come.
  • SilasLang

...yes, after the death the usual Boom, of Cobain's memory, even though I remember that even before the death, when "Grace" was released, it was already seen as an absolute masterpiece. Ian Curtis was a poet, and this album proved it. To me, it remains an undefinable masterpiece, 10 romantic, dark, and moving pieces. They are my favorite band post-'79, and when "New Dawn Fades" kicks in, I can't help but cry. 10.

True, Curtis was a great author and also a fantastic front-man... I mean, that bitterly self-ironic ballet (also) on "She's Lost Control" is truly heartbreaking if you think about it. Two incredible albums; if I had to choose, I’d say this one, "Closer," is a bit too distressing—damn, there's a ghost singing.
  • bluesboy94
    14 dec 14
True, this album is a tad more "accessible" and a tad less spectral... yet on "Closer" there are tracks like "Decades," "Heart and Soul," and especially "The Eternal" (where Ian sings like a "ghost") that are unique in the history of rock. Well, such dark music, and at the same time so poetic, I've only heard in Nico besides them.

I agree, there is no dispute.
Kevin Ayers: Joy Of A Toy

Delicious folk-pop-psychedelic mess from a little genius from Canterbury. 8.

The whole album is beautiful in its surreal nature (it's a shame you didn't appreciate it enough to give it the 5 rightful "balls"), but what really drives me crazy is especially "Town Feeling"!

For me 5 pallozze....maybe it's one of my favorite albums of all time.

    Wonderful...
King Crimson: Discipline
CD Audio I have it ★★★★★
New Wave masterpiece. After the golden triad of 1973-1974 (the albums by the Fripp-Wetton-Bruford lineup, to be clear), this is my favorite from King Crimson. The triad “Indiscipline”-“Discipline”-“The Sheltering Sky” is textbook.
King Crimson: Starless And Bible Black

Live in a monolithic studio, of pure and wild avant-garde.
King Crimson: Larks' Tongues in Aspic
CD Audio I have it ★★★★★
With this, my all-time favorite KC era begins. Not that I don’t adore the first fantastic quartet (1969-1971), I want to be clear, but with this and the next two, incredible heights will be reached not just in progressive, which here is abundantly digested and surpassed, but for music as a whole. Total rock, with the best Crimson lineup ever for me. 10/10.

Another beautiful cover, by the way.
King Crimson: Lizard

Magniloquent fairy-tale painting, blending jazz, progressive, and poetry. A masterpiece, for me.
Indefinable, one of the peaks of progressive music as well as the initiator of a genre. Seminal.

I've been listening to it for 3-4 years and only now I've bought the original. :D

this is A MUST HAVE original at all costs. Sometimes I think about grabbing the vinyl, looking at it for 5 minutes, and then putting it back, :D

I feel the same way. There's something magnetic about it that pushes you to do it.

Masterpiece. It might be my favorite by KC along with Red (it's hard for me to choose between the two, I admit).

Uh, for me until Red is all gold. Maybe only Islands will be silver..

Yes, for me it's all good at Thrak :D But we're having the same old talks, now I'm putting on Bel and I'm out of here.

The "mother" of prog, if it weren't for that masterpiece "Valentyne Suite," the eponymous track that gives the album its name, which could make him lose his procreative scepter, as it was "born" a few months earlier than the "big face" and printed about a month beforehand, in that fateful 1969. But then the rest speaks for itself... I bow.

Yes, until recently I only knew this about KC, an album I listened to all winter a few years ago, just this and nothing else... very beautiful, a story of music.
King Crimson: In The Wake Of Poseidon
CD Audio I have it ★★★★
Great album, on the heels of the monolithic debut but more Jazz and experimental. It's the one from the early KC that I listen to "less" (note the quotes), but here too the standout tracks are plentiful: “Cadence and Cascade”, the title track, and the sinister (not coincidentally) and abyssal “The Devil's Triangle” are among the best in their repertoire, for example.
King Crimson: Red
CD Audio I have it ★★★★★
An epochal record, immense, extraordinary, brilliant, insane. Alongside the debut, the best of the Crimson King: a journey through fallen angels, black Bibles, and starless nights. Crazy. Five tracks that made the history of progressive. 10.

Absurd. Far beyond progressive. Incredible sounds, still sounds incredibly modern today, a record light-years ahead.

Classical and poetic.
Le Orme: Collage
CD Audio I have it ★★★★★
Among the coolest and most dazzling debuts in Italian Rock. Title track and the consecutive triptych "Cemento Armato" - "Sguardo verso il Cielo" - "Evasione totale" mark the first and grandiose cries of Progressive Italico.

That it is an exceptional album is beyond doubt, but it’s not exactly a debut :)
  • SydBarrett96

I meant debut in the world of progressive, in the sense of being one of the initiators of a movement. :) I should have clarified better.
  • hjhhjij

Oh yes, it really seems like it's their debut :) In any case, it is probably the clearest contender for the title of "initiator of prog-rock in Italy," no doubt about it, and it's a beautiful album.

I completely agree with you, as almost always dear Syd... my favorite by Le Orme will always be Collage but this is of the highest level, a great album of which we Italians should be proud, great music.

Among other things, "Collage" is a stunning album, as is "Uomo di Pezza." Le Orme are among my favorite Italian Rock bands; for example, I prefer them even to the great PFM.
Led Zeppelin: Led Zeppelin
CD Audio I have it ★★★★★
One of the most stunning debuts in rock history. A hard-blues magnificently played by incredible musicians and a gigantic vocalist. Monumental right from the cover. 9.5.
