This 12" debut from True Sound Of Liberty is another "milestone" (god what an awful term) of hardcore. Then they started doing the "Sisters of Mercy" thing (referring to the Goths, not that they resembled the SOM) as well...

Who are you telling? I bought "My Dark Places" (the comeback album after the years in jail spent by Dan...) and flushed 20 euros down the toilet.
What is there to say about the first visionary wail of one of my absolute favorite bands? I might slightly prefer the subsequent, colossal "Easter Everywhere," but that’s a matter of minutiae. "You're Gonna Miss Me," "Fire Engine," "Splash 1," "Kingdom of Heaven"... each one cooler than the last. And Roky remains the most badass vocalist in Texas...

One of the records I have always loved the most. The Deal sisters in my heart... forever. And I'm convinced that the pop perfection of songs like "Cannonball," "Invisible Man," and "No Aloha" has made a certain talented chubby guy we all love just a little envious...
A delightful fifty minutes catapulted back to full 1967, California. Among stoners wandering the desert playing country rock among the coyotes (and under peyote) in the moonlight, a few brief stops in India and some pop songs that border on perfection. I prefer their more experimental and/or less revivalist works, but 'Give It Back!' remains a pleasure. A hearty 4.5!

I’m not crazy about "The Head on the Door" either. But a band that has given us gems like "Three Imaginary Boys," "Seventeen Seconds," "Faith," and "Pornography" can only enjoy my unconditional love! Ah… then there’s an album that really gets me angry, that "Kiss Me, Kiss Me, Kiss Me" that could have been yet another fucking masterpiece and the scarecrow ruined it by throwing in nonsense like "Why Can't I Be You?", "Hot Hot Hot", "Hey You!"… amidst gems like "The Kiss," "Catch," "If Only Tonight We Could Sleep," "Just Like Heaven," etc. etc. etc.… couldn't they do a single LP with 10-11 tracks? No, huh? XD
  • Psychopathia
    23 jul 15
hey you it's really bullshit, it was in the lp and in the new cd reissue. it wasn't in the old cd version but I knew I wasn't missing anything. anyway, if I had to choose just one, I'd say pornography is fine for me. let's just say the first 4 are perfect, too bad the ignorance of the public has made Robert Smith take that gem killing an arab out of the reissues. which was nothing more than a reference to Camus' The Stranger. whatever.
  • SilasLang

I have "Boys Don't Cry" the American version from 1980 with "Killing An Arab," which is why I prefer this version to "Three Imaginary Boys" from '79. I agree that Wish is the last unmissable album by Robert Smith's band; for me, it's a five-star album just like all their work up until 1992, including that 1987 record that annoys Silas so much (we've discussed it countless times). Then, aside from a few single songs on the few records still produced, it's almost total darkness. They have written memorable pages and are undoubtedly one of my all-time favorite bands... A LETTER TO ELISE...

@de marga, the 1987 album you mean is 'Kiss Me'? Hahaha... it really annoys me because it’s a missed masterpiece. Packed with gems but ruined by utter crap as explained above... it could have been a single LP with 10 tracks... it would have been yet another masterpiece.

Nice memories, which puts me at risk of judging the album better than it actually is. Anyway, here Robert Smith as a singer reaches his peak in my opinion. I'm fine with Kiss Me, there are four or five tracks that should have been used as B-sides, instead they are there weighing it down.

And what if I said this is my favorite? Crazy? I don't know, in the end, I see it as their culmination, balanced between their rides and their more pop pieces, even more so than Disintegration. And compared to its predecessor, I like this one more even in terms of production; you can tell it’s a child of the '90s, with that "shoegazer" attitude that stands out in some tracks, like Open and From The Edge. And then there's Friday I'm In Love and High, two of their most successful pop songs.

Vinile I have it ★★★★
An album that, in my opinion, could have been trimmed down a bit. It could have been a new masterpiece. We find many gems of undeniable beauty ["The Kiss", "Catch", "If Only Tonight..", "The Snakepit", "One More Time"....] It's a shame there are also quite a few duds ["Why can't I be You?", "Hey You!" etc.] oh Robert! What were you thinking?

I go crazy for the first 4 [with "Faith" on top], but after The Top something definitely broke for me. And this album, on the other hand, makes me really angry because it seemed like Robert Smith had finally woken up, considering it's filled with beautiful songs. Too bad that to drag out the damn thing unnecessarily [double vinyl, 18 tracks], he included some real trash among the true gems... it could have been yet another masterpiece had he stopped at 10 tracks... ps. I never liked Disintegration. I prefer this 1000 times. Too bad it makes me angry :D

I only heard the 2004 self-titled one when it came out, borrowed it. A pile of crap. I didn't care at all about the 2008 one. Anyway, in my opinion, they won't come up with anything more... they’ll just do some tours for summer festivals from time to time and that’s it... and that's just fine.

  • De...Marga...
    24 jul 15
Robert's idea wasn't bad: to close a sort of trilogy after the undisputed masterpieces of Pornography and Disintegration. But the result is a soft, dull record apart from the endless "Watching Me Fall." Let's hold on to what was done before.
  • pozzo
    24 jul 15
Well, no, I can’t agree. As a serious admirer of their work, I feel compelled to share my thoughts: it’s true that the whole thing had a bit of a nostalgia operation vibe, but for me, the final result was more than good. Sure, it was on the heavier side, but at least this is an album (unlike their more poppy works) that maintains the same atmospheres and intents from the first to the last track. There’s no risk, like in Wish (which is still a stratospheric album), of having two songs like Apart and Friday I’m in Love too close together; aside from that, there are still great songs (check out / listen to Trilogy if you haven’t already) like The Last Day of Summer and the title track. If we want to find disappointing and useless albums by The Cure, it’s better to think of that crap Wild Moon Swing (aside from Want) and the last two.
  • hjhhjij
    24 jul 15
But indeed, this isn’t just a load of crap, like the ones you mentioned; it’s more of a "floppy" record, a bit of a crowd-pleaser and soulless; in my opinion, of course. The classic professional record, very much by the book.

The problem with this album, like the previous Wild Mood Swings and everything that will follow, is having to be inevitably compared to the fabulous production of the eighties. And so there is no competition at all, at least from my point of view.

Hey guys... what can I say? To each their own. In response to dear Pozzo, I quite liked the eclecticism of "Wish." Well, I don't even think it's a return to the "dark shores," but rather a natural, more mature and measured evolution of them (though I get that it might annoy some). Like others here, I appreciate the overall cohesiveness, and yes, at least "Last Day of Summer," "Bloodflowers," and "Out of This World" are great tracks deserving of the best of The Cure. For me, the last genuinely good album is this one; the 2004 album is adequate, but the 2008 one is indeed a bit weak.

I've never been interested in the cures, I don't like a single one of the famous ones, so I don't bother. I'm writing because the discussion about wild mood swings reminded me of something I read in a newspaper, it said, "Smith once said he wanted to make an obviously horrifying album sooner or later, just to see who would buy it: now we know for sure, he actually did it with wild mood swings."

I probably didn't listen to those; I couldn't even tell you the titles of the songs I've listened to because I don't remember them. The ones that play on the radio or in videos, I never liked them—not the sound, not the voice, not the melodies, nothing at all; they meant nothing to me.

Yes hhyhy, as I was saying to Psychopathia, I will try something else, but I actually knew I had stumbled upon something quite "representative" (even if it was just those 3 pieces and a bit more), and since it didn't really say anything to me, I actually avoided it right away. As I wrote to Psycho, there are so many things out there that I don't know that at some point I have to make a selection, even a quick one.
  • hjhhjij

    25 jul 15
Well, definitely not a very cohesive album, in my opinion. However, I really like the first three tracks; I particularly enjoy "watch me fall," I love the prolonged screams at the edges of the refrains! 3 tracks out of 9 don't make for a great album, but rather an unsuccessful one. I agree on that. I also agree on WISH, great playlist. On DISINTEGRATION Silas, we don't quite agree, in the sense that it's certainly very sugary and almost embarrassing for the heaps of romanticism it contains, but damn, if only all albums were like that! So for me, it's still among their masterpieces. My favorite is PORNOGRAPHY, no bullshit as you say, he he, but I find myself having to share it equally with FAITH, there's no other way according to my taste. ALL THE CATS ARE GREY already holds this consideration for me by itself. Hula Silas!

Robert, what the hell are you doing?? - Once upon a time, in the 90s, there was a nice little record shop in a small town near my home. I too have fallen for certain flops, during the time when I spent all my money on records practically, and I also had to return an album after just a few days; I read that they actually defined it as the classic "crazy crap." I've literally worn this CD out. 5 stars is even too few. My favorite from JSBX, without a doubt. The dirtiest, scrappiest, filthiest, and coolest. Recorded strictly with the ass...Fuck shit up!

It's true... but Orange is no less. I liked Acme less. Now I've been enjoying the expanded and/or double versions of all three for a couple of years. PS: It doesn't really relate much, but... what do you think of the double CD of the Royal Trux B sides and rarities? For me, even though it's not an album, it's one of the most beautiful things in their discography (I have everything by them).
  • ZannaB
    11 jul 13
"Recorded strictly with the ass" yes!!!!!
  • SilasLang
    11 jul 13
Orange yes, beautiful, whatever you like, [as well as the first album and Extra Width, they're cool too] but for me, this is the top! I still liked Acme. The problems started with Plastic Fang..
  • SilasLang
    11 jul 13
I’ve never listened to the Royal Trux you mentioned… in fact, I’m completely unaware of their existence! I adored Cats and Dogs by Royal Trux. I’ll catch up on it, though, thanks for the tip!
  • Psychopathia
    11 jul 13
Well, Plastic Fang sucks! The one after, for goodness' sake... PS: the double CD I was talking about is: singles, live, unreleased. If you get a chance. Also, Sweet Sixteen is really nice.

Excuse me, gentlemen, I see you are well-versed on the topic and I'm shamelessly taking advantage of it: a title (just one, okay!) for the Pussy Galore?
  • Psychopathia
    11 jul 13
Unfortunately, I don't own any Pussy Galore, but among the first two, you always do well. Anyway, I'll leave the floor to Silas, who is definitely more experienced than I am.
  • SilasLang
    11 jul 13
I absolutely adore Pussy Galore. Christ, grab records like "Right Now!", the EP "Sugarshit Sharp" and "Dial M" at all costs!
  • ZannaB
    12 jul 13
Oh no, you got me! I had only written one! :-) I'm adding Right Now to the shopping list... ;-) Thanks!
  • hjhhjij
    12 jul 13
Yes Zanna, absolutely Right Now! If you want just one. Dial M is very nice but a notch below, in my opinion.
  • SilasLang
    12 jul 13
"Right Now!" is the most chaotic chaos there is, yes, hj, Dial is slightly below, but just a bit :) Sugarshit, on the other hand, is on par with Right Now.
  • hjhhjij
    12 jul 13
Look Right Now! is one of my favorite albums from the '80s, it hit me like a train, the perfect imperfect record. Sugarshit for me is already a step down, but it's a 5 too, a fabulous EP (with the cover of my beloved Neubauten as the standout track). Dial M is a fantastic record, but I like it less (a bit like Groovy Hate Fuck and their very early works). Another truly huge one is Live in Rosso from 1989 (released 9 years later but whatever). That would have been the perfect epitaph, if it weren't for Historia.
  • SilasLang
    12 jul 13
Same for Right Now! Among my favorites from the '80s.
The first, wildly ragged full-length from JSBX picks up where Pussy Galore left off. The first gem of filthy and ultra-crooked Blues-Punk from the label... One of those records I load into the car before hitting the highway. The risk of breaking the speed limit is downright high...
  • hjhhjij
    18 jul 14
By necessity, one feels closest to Pussy Galore. Finally, I've heard it too, even though I only have it in mp3, it's beautiful. I got "Orange" the other day, another great one, obviously more "purely" Blues Explosion-esque compared to this. Then there’s also the contemporaneous "A Reverse Willie Horton" and the subsequent Crypt Style, all three having more or less the same tracks. Great group, but "Right Now!" is "Right Now!".
  • SilasLang
    18 jul 14
'A Reverse...' is a demo, there are tracks that are here too... but I miss it. 'Right Now'... oh my! Yes, but also 'Now I Got Worry' is 'Now I Got Worry' :P
  • darth agnan
    18 jul 14
it's very lovely too extra width, the second one. I just listened to it again today along with orange (a masterpiece). jon spencer saint right away.
  • SilasLang
    18 jul 14
Absolutely, Darth...perhaps the most black of all, 'Extra Width'...but up until 'Acme', Jon hasn't missed a beat.
  • hjhhjij
    18 jul 14
"Acme" was already quite a bit less beautiful compared to the previous ones, but still good. Anyway, yes, A Reverse is a demo, basically it’s like this: A Reverse demo, this is the first actual album and Crypt is the compilation with almost all the tracks already included in this and A Reverse; in fact, one could also choose one of these to be in line with the very first JSBX (or JSBE). What can I say, "Orange" is a masterpiece, I agree with Darth, and I give the same label to Now I Got Worry, which, as you rightly say S, is Now I Got Worry :D Great band and great character Spencer, a real beast.
  • SilasLang
    19 jul 14
Yes, 'Acme' is already on a slight decline... but it has three or four killer pieces in its arsenal...
  • hjhhjij
    19 jul 14
And that super cool video with Ryder aahahahah :D
  • ZannaB
    21 jul 14
For me, Now I Got Worry wins above all; I really love that album! Have you listened to the latest Silas?
  • SilasLang
    21 jul 14
Zanna, absolutely my favorite. Back in the day, I listened to it nonstop. The most raw, filthy, and thrilling of JSBX. When it came out and I got it, I think in '96, I had no doubts since then. I played it on repeat nonstop, of course, I immediately dubbed it onto a cassette for the car XD.
  • ZannaB
    21 jul 14
I bought it later, when (thankfully) I already had a car radio with a CD player! But I also had the "pleasure" of listening to tapes left in a car parked in the sun. After a few months, the tape expanded so much that the CD played 2 times faster! :-)))
An album that is pure pop perfection.. Beatles or Stones? The Kinks!
The Lemonheads: Car Button Cloth
CD Audio I have it ★★★★
Between one cover and another, between a pear and a crack rock, between screwing Courtney Love and a still warm Cobain corpse, and other nonsense, Evan Dando also managed to hit a couple of albums. This is one of them. Very nice, fresh, and enjoyable. I've always liked it a lot. The other one is "Lick," from 1989. The rest is fluff…
The Mothers of Invention: Uncle Meat
Vinile I have it ★★★★★
It's really hard for me to choose a favorite album by the Mothers from Freak Out! to Weasels. This one competes with Absolutely Free. Right now, it's on repeat. The symphony of chaos.
The perfect Pop album.
The Queers: Love Songs for the Retarded
Vinile I have it ★★★★★
16 tracks of such idiotic, vulgar, and demented punk rock that it makes me cry with joy. At times, it feels like listening to a drugged-out Brian Wilson leading some rough punk band in a shabby garage. Raw, melodic, vulgar, and incredibly cool. Take that, Green Day. The only "pop" punk I can stand. Because this album is truly punk.

Listen to an idiot and also try Screeching Weasel's "Anthems for a New Tomorrow" and maybe the Vindictives' "The Many Moods of..."
  • SilasLang
    25 sep 13
I really like the first two Screeching Weasel albums, especially the second one "Boogadaboogada..."...I don't know the Vindictives. I'll have to check them out :)
The Raincoats: The Raincoats
Vinile I have it ★★★★★
Among the coolest works born in the so-called "post-punk" era, this gem from these four ladies anticipates by several years certain slacker and lo-fi sounds that would become popular in the '90s...11 gems of skewed and out-of-tune (in the true sense of the word) guitar pop. Calvin Johnson will be taking notes!

Yes, yes, nice little group even though I've never heard this album.
The Red Krayola: The Parable of Arable Land
Vinile I have it ★★★★★
What the hell do you want to say to an album like that? Too often overlooked when talking about masterpieces of that acid psychedelia that emerged at the end of the sixties. Among the records I love the most, absolutely.

PLEASE :) Watch out, though! This album is all immersed in an absolutely amazing chaos! Don’t expect any freakbeat or folk rock in the summer of love style :)

    24 jun 13
great album, give it a listen, it won't disappoint you.
I don’t know, despite all the criticism, I’ve always liked this album... quite a bit actually. I’ve never understood what the hell it has to do with that baroque mess of Sgt. Pepper's, since it's always described as the ugly copy (?) of it... An excellent and a bit ramshackle psych/baroque pop/blues bacchanal... 4.5, fuck off!
  • ranofornace
    24 jun 13
"Their Satanic" the only true psych album by the Rolling Stones, a must-have in a collection of the "genre."
The Seeds: A Web of Sound
Vinile I have it ★★★★★
Deadly essay of supremely ignorant garage-rock with lysergic propulsion. Huge Seeds! And it is quite plausible that Lou Reed listened to the concluding, acid-infused, and kilometers-long "Up In Her Room" for inspiration for the "Sister Ray" of Velvet Underground memory...
The Strokes: Is This It
CD Audio I have it ★
Disk shit, ridiculous "band." A girl gave it to me (who else? "Oh my God, Juliaaaaaaan!!! How coooool!")... Stuff that's as sterile as it is useless. If this was the rebirth of Garage Rock bands like Pussy Galore, Oblivians, and even Reatards were Satan himself. Five idiots more interested in poses and cool outfits than in music. Sold it off in a flash.

for me it’s a big debut. The other works suck.
  • SilasLang
    31 jul 13
Well, to each their own... for me, it sucks. Besides this, I listened to the second one, which was also, unbelievably, worse!
  • aerdna
    31 jul 13
I recently listened to them again to see if they stood the test of time, and I find myself in disagreement with both! XD This one and the second (which I've reevaluated) are on par: they barely scrape by. Mediocre, but not that terrible. The third one, though, is truly awful. The next one I shelved after two listens and that's it. A group that's easily forgettable, but I believe there's worse even in their "genre" (ahaha), like Arctic Monkeys and Franz Ferdinand, which are much, much worse! Anyway, you did great by reselling it! ahahaa

For me, it's a very beautiful album. Julian Casablancas is a talent; if he attended a prestigious Swiss school and some think he's a spoiled rich kid, I don't care.

More or less, by the way, I believe he has always written and composed everything himself.

But let's talk about the important things: did the girl end up giving it to you?
  • Lao Tze
    1 aug 13
1 You can judge it only in hindsight, only in hindsight. When this came out and was still the first and only one, regardless of the bullshit you could read in the newspapers but who cares - I don’t read magazines, it was neither a masterpiece nor a terrible album. It was listened to without being transcendent. It's AFTER that the abomination arrived - ah, I reiterate for those who might think that I consider this "rock for girls" or things like that: I don’t care about them as characters, I've always judged the music and from the third album onward there’s nothing, on that front. Period.

shitty group, I agree with Silas :-)

and the record is equally shit
  • gnagnera

It's a not bad little album, certainly nothing amazing, but definitely not crap. Of course, it has nothing, really nothing to do with the other bands you mentioned, which are on another planet (and obviously much better).
The Vaselines: Dum-Dum
Vinile I have it ★★★★★
A little gem of ragged noise-pop in low-to-medium fidelity.

out of sight for a while, these were even from the era of the Jesus & Mary Chain... yet they returned after years, like many from that time thought to be lost and then resurfaced.
  • SilasLang
    22 jan 14
yeah yeah...they reformed, but I haven't followed their latest happenings much. for example, I don't know if they reformed just for a tour or if they released new material. I had also listened to the guy's project after the end of the Vaselines, Eugenious, but you know. Oh, and the two mini albums by the Vaselines are worth it. I love them...

    26 aug 14
I’ve always said that this album is great; I simply put the first Velvet Underground at the top.
Personal opinion, but it also kicks the ass of the much idolized (and beautiful, to be clear) banana record.
The Who: The Who Sell Out

We’re not exactly in a Goya painting... ;) For Tommy, I will never take to the barricades, but as for who's next, I at least feel entitled to advocate for a second chance, you never know when the spark that ignites the Molotov might just explode...

But do you know Live at Leeds?
  • Lao Tze
    15 jun 13
Compared to the vinyl, the expanded CD version of Live At Leeds is a gem, featuring a complete live Tommy that could change the minds of even those who didn't appreciate Tommy in the studio. Infinite words could be spent on Who's Next; I will only spend 4: THE SONG IS OVER.
  • madcat
    15 jun 13
Exactly Lao, live at Leeds complete version with Tommy is fabulous (it's true that it makes people appreciate Tommy even if they weren't enthusiastic about him, it essentially strips away all the bombast he had in the studio, and in reality, they cut him a bit too, they remove the instrumental piece in the middle for example which I also find a bit heavy).
