Dustin Hoffman is undoubtedly a great actor, but Rod Steiger, Robert De Niro, Al Pacino, Jack Nicholson, Marlon Brando, and Buster Keaton are a step above. If I may suggest, you should watch Angel Heart with Robert De Niro, Il Mercante di Venezia with Al Pacino, and Giù la testa with Rod Steiger. These three films are the least debatable proof of their talent and a testament to their superiority.

I liked Manfredi's irony; if you watch him in "Straziami ma di baci saziami," you'll split your sides laughing... also in the episodic film about that supermarket outing, "In nome del Papa Re"... the great, the legendary Gian Maria Volontè. Today I was rewatching "Per qualche dollaro in più" :-)

@Donnie Darko, you are right; it's indeed difficult to choose between Al Pacino and Robert De Niro. When faced with these two, you just have a wealth of options, and personal tastes ultimately prevail.
@PanNZZOone1, the top 10 are always the same, come what may. What I think penalizes Nicholson is that he has always played the role of the crazy one; he’s not versatile. Nevertheless, he remains a great actor. Dustin Hoffman has undeniable talent, but in my opinion, De Niro stands higher. Honestly, I've noticed that Volonté also tends to adopt the same expression, but he is still a superb actor.

Dustin Hoffman has undeniable talent, but De Niro is, in my view, a notch above. I honestly noticed that both Volonté and he always adopt the same expression but he remains a great actor nonetheless.

The crazy one, not in the sense of being a lunatic in the true sense of the word, but never quite fitting the mold of a normal person; there always emerges that slightly "out of the ordinary" nature, that unique, uncommon aspect. This is reinforced by Nicholson's roles in: One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest, The Shining, As Good as It Gets, The Departed (a singular take on Costello), etc. It's clear there have been some exceptions, but usually, he always brings that aspect to the character.
