Hello and welcome to the lodge of unrepentant proggers (which encompasses all the prog enthusiasts of the site). We are growing in number and soon we will take control.
Now that you are part of the Lodge, I must say: personally, I would have included more Van Der Graaf Generator. Personally, neo-prog really gets on my nerves, but I do appreciate the little I like, and I love it a lot. The ranking is personal and not trivial, and I really like it.
Shopping recommendations: Comus (First Utterance), Banco del Mutuo Soccorso, PFM, Locanda delle Fate. Since there are also groups that are not strictly prog like Gong, I also recommend Caravan, Soft Machine, High Tide, Magma, Hatfield and the North, Area, etc. If you already know them and just wanted to limit it to twenty names to keep it brief, feel free to tell me to screw off :)

really cute... I agree with HJ, also I don't see, for example, Yes and ELP, idiosyncrasies or omissions?

Hi guys, greetings to everyone! I just signed up. For the ranking, I decided to stop at twenty for now. Thanks for the suggestion about the Comus, whom I honestly don't know. As for Yes, don't kill me, but it's a band I can't stand—this is just my personal shortcoming.

Really interesting ranking. I just disagree with the absence of Soft Machine. Yes and ELP have a distinct and quite mannered sound that might not appeal to everyone, but "Third" by Soft Machine is an astounding album that alone deserves to be in the top 5.
    Welcome.

The Soft Machine is a band I like, but since this is a ranking of twenty bands, I'm not sure who to remove. Keep in mind that I have excluded bands like Caravan, Area, PFM, Banco, Magna, and Anekdoten.

I understand you perfectly! Let's say that I prefer them (definitely) to the giant and the Marillion... and maybe even more than Jethro. Anyway, some of them I don't know, so thanks for the recommendation.

I don't know these Family either, thanks for the advice.

xAx is right, they would fit in well too, even if they wouldn't be purely progressive, they are giants.

Come on...the ranking isn't purely prog, we're including the Spirit and the Third Ear Band as well.

Well, for the Duul II at this point we might as well make a separate Krauta ranking, right?

Here’s another one! Welcome, Mild, quite a quirky and bouncy ranking. There are so many important ones missing that it would be tedious to make a list. I’ve noticed, though, that you’ve included some more recent progressive stuff, even Spock's Beard! Hmm... but regarding this, without getting too technical, you can't not listen to Anglagard, Isildurs Bane, Anekdoten, Big Big Train, Porcupine Tree, Discipline... enough, I said it would be tedious. By the way, does mild refer to nicotine level or curry spiciness? Anyway, good job and best wishes!

Sorry, Mild, I didn't see that you made a separate ranking.

Hi, I realize that it’s a quite debatable ranking, where talented bands from the 70s are missing, but the new entries are just as good; their misfortune is that they made prog after the 80s. Many albums from these bands, if they had been released in the 70s, would definitely be referred to as masterpieces. Take Echolyn for example: listen to their latest album just released or Suffocating The Bloom, and you’ll notice that their position is deserved, or any album by The Tangent, an extraordinarily talented band. The only one I could remove is Transatlantic, who are very similar to Spock's Beard, but when you listen to SMPT, it remains in that position. Then there’s Neal Morse, an artist I appreciate a lot. Mild stands for nicotine rate.

Great ranking, but the Genesis (oh my god, Pana, put down that gun!) aside from a couple of albums (Nursery and Foxtrot, but especially Nursery) I don't consider extraordinary... I agree on the absence of ELP. I like Yes but I wouldn't fight for them ;)... Gong and Jethro, as much as they're prog-non-prog, I would rank higher, and I would erase Pink Floyd without regrets. But I don’t want to be a pain further, enjoy your stay.

Hello, for Genesis I would agree if we consider the entire discography, but I was only referring to the Peter Gabriel era with the four albums that earned him the ranking: Trespass, Nursery Cryme, Foxtrot, and Selling England by the Pound.

For Gong and Jethro, it depends on tastes; you should know that at one point Jethro was my favorite band.

I can see from certain comments that you are a good family.

"I see from certain comments that you're a good family." Yes, we're a site of nice fools, and now you're in it too :)
But you forgot The Lamb, which is perhaps the masterpiece (at least the most modern and innovative one). And don't be like those who say that Trick and Wind and Wuthering aren't worth a dime just because Gabriel isn't there, okay? :)

March! I see this comment now. Don't worry, I'm not going to kill you, especially since Hjhhjij has taken the rifle out of my hands. Anyway, for me, the two you mentioned are indeed the best albums by Genesis (though I would add The Lamb). Yes, I consider Trick + Wuthering a really good pairing (especially the first one); but lately, I might be preferring King Crimson over Genesis (though here the differences are minimal). Why would you eliminate Floyd? Are they not prog or do you just not like them? For me, they haven't missed a beat at least until Animals. You managed to dismantle the two most representative groups for me with just one comment (not sure if they are my favorites, but they’re in the running), but my rifle is the last thing you need to worry about. I would also add: but doesn't anyone ever give John Barleycorn Must Die any love?

Honored to be part of the fools, The Lamb is definitely one of the most influential albums of the '70s, it's the turning point of prog, modern and innovative on this planet, I agree, but compared to Trespass, Nursery Cryme, Foxtrot, Selling, it's a minor work. Trick and Wind and Wuthering is a good album, in fact, the Genesis did not decline with Gabriel's departure but with Hackett's, who leaves after this album.

    • hjhhjij
      23 oct 12
And I agree here (even though I like Duke, but as a pop album). It's just that The Lamb is not a 'minor work,' quite the contrary. Maybe you like it less, I can understand that :)
  • mild
    23 oct 12
Let's say it's an album I like less, but in my opinion they could have made it a single album by eliminating all those pop rock songs that take away points.

    • hjhhjij
      23 oct 12
But there are no pop-rock songs except Counting at Time. And then it's a Rock Opera, the double makes sense, but the ending with "It" is a bit disappointing.
    • pana
      5 nov 12
In my opinion, Counting Out Time and It do not detract from the album. Let's say it's a less optimal second side, with plenty of great songs (Anyway is deadly) but also some fillers/less inspired tracks (in the rapids). It fits in the end; the story is over, and a classic allegorical and somewhat moralistic ending is always needed :)

    23 oct 12
In my opinion, the Birdsongs of the Mesozoic are missing. I don't know if you're familiar with them, but given your taste, I think you would like them.

Oh my God, yes. I haven't listened to them in ages, that crazy guy Felo passed them on to me :D Great band, recommended by me too :)
