I'm sorry! But no matter how much of a fan you might be of Beethoven, you can't place him ahead of Bizet and Mascagni in this field!...........I know I might be picky! But putting Puccini in this field is a crime! At least in the top 5!

I would absolutely say yes instead... Fidelio is the very first serious opera written in Germany, since Don Giovanni is clearly semi-serious. Therefore, it holds great importance for the German operatic tradition. Moreover, there is no doubt that it is orchestrated hundreds of times better than the very crude works of Mascagni (whom I adore anyway). Bizet's Carmen is certainly an important opera since it marks the beginning of verismo in melodrama, but in my opinion, it is a bit too easy and catchy an opera that can become tiresome after a few repeated listens. As for Puccini, I always think that his music, no matter how beautiful it may be, is a bit too affected, pathetic, at times almost sentimental.

And Richard Strauss and Berg and Debussy?

Of the great Richard Strauss, for now I only know Der Rosenkavalier, an immense and exquisitely refined masterpiece... however, overall I know too little and therefore I will wait to add him to the list... I have never listened to any of Debussy's operas, I will make sure to fill that gap... I have listened to Berg's Wozzeck, it is certainly a masterpiece, but it is not to my taste...

Hello, the geis of Strauss's Salomé, Elektra, and Die Frau ohne Schatten (especially, in my opinion, Salomé), and Debussy's beautiful Pelléas et Mélisande.

I have listened to almost all of Strauss's operatic works...great...especially Elektra and Salome...harsh and wicked pieces, splendid...Pelléas et Mélisande on the other hand is an absolute bore...for me, an unbearable opera...evanescent, languid, pale, lacking vigor, it didn’t convince me at all.

Thank you for the advice!... I'll try to get them, unfortunately not right away because I'm having financial problems... The works cost a fortune (between 25 and 40 euros!) and I do NOT love burned CDs...
