Richard Strauss (1864–1949) was a German composer known for his operas (Salome, Elektra, Der Rosenkavalier), tone poems (Also sprach Zarathustra, Ein Heldenleben) and late lieder (Vier letzte Lieder).

Collaborated extensively with librettist Hugo von Hofmannsthal; later worked with Stefan Zweig. Composed the Oboe Concerto in 1945. Prominent composer of late-Romantic and early-20th-century German opera and orchestral tone poems.

DeBaser reviews praise Strauss's dramatic operas (Salome, Elektra), his operatic comedy (Der Rosenkavalier), the intimacy of his lieder (Vier letzte Lieder) and highlight the luminous Oboe Concerto. Reviews note collaborations with Hofmannsthal and Zweig and touch on his complex wartime context.
