teenage you're crazy!!! now run and listen to those records, and then apologize to the Rush! :D

teenage, look, I’m not a fan of progressive rock, quite the opposite, in fact there are only a few bands of that genre that I appreciate or even love... but punk gives me acute rheumatism in every part of my body, I mean... no thanks! :D

  • Well, that was to suggest some groups that deserve to be on this list... worse for you then :D

Honestly, I find it ridiculous that people can comment on the rankings. It's not a review but something personal; for StoneColdCrazy, Mercury is God, whereas I, for example, think Queen sucks... but I don't feel the need to tell him!

Looking at the rankings, the name Deep Purple stands out to me. Perhaps the band I've reevaluated (negatively) the most in my journey as a listener. I listened to Machine Head again just the other day, and it doesn't resonate with me anymore; the same goes for the others I still own. I think I'm going to sell them :D

  • Well done Alfre ;) Anyway, we do a lot for a little fun, Gallagher :D

  • Alfredo
    9 nov 10
Gallagher, on the other hand, for me, comments are important; they can provide ideas for discussing music. Otherwise, I wonder, what's the purpose of these rankings? You might as well just make one at home and not show it to anyone.

  • Just to say, the Purple's albums don't say much to me either, live obviously it's a different story and they remain great.

  • stonecoldcrazy
    9 nov 10
Let's say that in Deep Purple's music, aesthetics often prevail over emotions, but the quality of those albums, in my opinion, is so outstanding that it doesn't suffer for it...

    9 nov 10
Teen, I used to really like the Purple years ago, that's why I was surprised after re-listening to MH. I asked myself, "..but I used to like these so much once, and now? nothing."

I believe Noel wanted to get back at me for the fact that "his" Oasis are on my black-list, but it's not my fault if they're less than mediocre...

That's why I laugh when someone says, "I'll listen to XXXXX (music genre) for the rest of my life" or "I'll never listen to XXXXX." It happened to me with a lot of music too.

Alfrè, I never think in terms of genres, in fact I can't stand those genre classifications that tend to imprison the artist in a cliché... I simply say that I don't appreciate punk, hardcore, and the like because all the artists of that type I've listened to just didn't appeal to me.

  • And you thought Lucio would pull me out... :)

    9 nov 10
aaarrgghhhh, teenage is a low blow! :D @alfrè: don't worry, it's just a joke, I have nothing against those who listen to punk and the like. We always joke about teenage and geb! I just don't like those genres, just like you don't like prog. But in the end, each of us has much more varied listening tastes.

I would like to hope that you were joking! Otherwise, I'll impale you with my freshly sharpened spear made from fish glue, got it? Long live Sum 41!! Not those little bands that you listen to in 10!!! :DDD

An old man gets on a train and sits down next to a punk with a flashy hairstyle sticking straight up, colored green, orange, and yellow.
The old man has a puzzled look on his face.
The punk, intending to stir trouble, says: "Well... what’s up, grandpa? In your shitty life, haven't you ever been a little rebellious?"
"Actually, yes," replies the old man, "once when I was young, I... well, I fucked a parrot... and now I was wondering if perhaps you are my son."

  • This seemed to me like you had already said it, Fede... it's old after all ;) Prog, well, the good old R N R can’t be boring. The Rush, on the other hand, have tracks that are also 15/20 min long... A torment, in short :P

@teenage: even my infinite repertoire has its limits. ;D Anyway teenage, just so you know, Rush doesn't only have 20-minute songs... Check out their first album, or "Fly By Night" or "Caress of Steel," which are more rock-oriented.

  • Faith, I know for sure. Still, even those 9/10 ones like XYZ and La Villa Strangiato bore me a little bit :D Anyway, I know the early ones were more hard rock... maybe one of these days I'll give them a listen :D

You were right hjihhjij, what a masterpiece this album is! Heartfelt atmospheres and remarkable lyrics! Darkness, Refugees, White Hammer, and After The Flood are insane (not that the other 2 are any less... xD)! However, besides Hammill's voice and lyricism, I would also highlight the monstrous sax work of David Jackson!!!

Calm down, listen and let those sounds settle. Mine was just an invitation not to stop there. As for Wishbone Ash, there's indeed a wealth of choices, but I definitely stick to "Argus" (despite "Persephone").

great hjhhjij, what a fantastic band VDGG is! At least the first 2 albums of the trilogy are nothing short of wonderful, and I’m enjoying them thoroughly, also because their music is not very immediate, rather quite challenging I’d say, so with each listen you perceive a new facet! Now I’ll enjoy these 2 albums first and then I’ll move on to Pawn Hearts! XD Cheers. ;)

The purely heavy Judas Priest from the '80s doesn't excite me; for me, the peak is the poker "Sad Wings," "Sin After Sin," "Stained Class," and "Killing Machine" – truly exceptional.

  • hjhhjij
    2 feb 11
Stone Jackson was also absent from the previous album; despite that, the result was more than good. Hammill, Banton, and Evans are three powerhouses.

  • stonecoldcrazy
    2 feb 11
Geo, may I ask which one you disagree with? :)

  • stonecoldcrazy
    2 feb 11
yes, I know hjhhjij, but Jackson's sax is a true trademark of the band... :)

  • If there's a band that anticipated Heavy, it was definitely Rainbow... from whom Judas borrowed 100 riffs to be honest ;)

  • hjhhjij
    2 feb 11
@Stone: that's very true, they have lost something, but the result is still excellent, trust me ;)
To the lobotomized: Rainbow against Judas? Nice challenge. The former had something heavy, just think of Cozy, but those lyrics that are so markedly fantasy have never connected me to metal.

  • stonecoldcrazy
    2 feb 11
But even musically, the Rainbow are light years away from metal... inZomma teenage really went overboard! :)

  • ProgRock
    2 feb 11
A small but excellent ranking, even though Queen and Judas don't excite me as much as the others present.

  • Well, if fantasy lyrics can't be linked to metal, then I don't know where to place them, to be honest ;) For me, the two true forerunners of heavy are Iommi and Ritchie.

  • stonecoldcrazy
    2 feb 11
...and if we really want to be honest, before Rainbow, Queen had already produced a masterpiece of epic/fantasy rock: "Queen2"!

  • stonecoldcrazy
    2 feb 11
On Iommy we agree teenage! :)

  • If the Judas are metal or precursors of metal, I really don't see why not the Rainbow -

  • stonecoldcrazy
    2 feb 11
Anyway, the Rainbows, as wonderful as they are, are not metal at all.

  • I'm sorry, but NO! They are either both Hard Rock or both metal pioneers... either one or the other.

  • Despite their obvious differences, it is undeniable that the riffs of Rainbow have been pillaged by everyone, including Judas...

  • hjhhjij
    2 feb 11
Come on, the Rainbow didn’t anticipate metal like the Sabs or Judas (even though I admit I like the Rainbow maybe more than the aforementioned). Something yes, but not with the same impact. By the way, does anyone know Michele Campovecchio? I listened to his wonderful debut album just today.

  • stonecoldcrazy
    2 feb 11
As teenagers, Rainbow were extremely influential in the realm of metal, but they weren't actually it. The first band to play true heavy metal was Judas, imho... I mean, this is metal, plain and simple, and we're in '76:

  • Rising is from the same year as Sad Wings... honestly, I don't find much difference in the hardness of the sound; they are either both hard rock, which is fine, or both pre-metal. Rainbow practically founded Power... the track you linked has a riff copied from "Stargazer"... that's a fact ;) Anyway, I'm not interested in saying who invented what (because it's impossible), but for me, if Judas are considered the true pioneers of metal, then so were Rainbow.

  • stonecoldcrazy
    2 feb 11
the piece you linked has the riff copied from "Stargazer"... it's a fact ;) >>> well, I don't really agree!

  • stonecoldcrazy
    2 feb 11
The Rainbow have practically founded Power >>>> here I agree.

  • Anyway, I don't really see any differences in "hardness" (when it comes to metal, that's what we're talking about)... and even the first Rainbow album has a track - Sixteenth Century Greensleeves - from which Judas copied the riff word for word for Beyond The Realms Of Death - I think it was the year after.

  • stonecoldcrazy
    2 feb 11
1977 >>> come on, if this isn't metal!!!

  • Well, then if we really want to, for me even N.I.B. and Iron Man, to name a couple, are already practically metal. However, I repeat the concept: at least until '76 (the year of Sad Wings, considered by many to be the turning point album of Judas), in terms of "heaviness," the Rainbow of Rising has nothing to envy the Judas.

  • fedezan76
    2 feb 11
I believe that the pioneers of heavy metal were Deep Purple with "In Rock." However, the Priest definitely modernized it, smoothing out the strong blues influences. Still, it doesn't seem that crucial to me. And 1976 is certainly a great year.

  • fedezan76
    2 feb 11
of course heavy metal, we are not at McDonald's ;D

  • stonecoldcrazy
    2 feb 11
Teenage, I mostly agree with the first part of your comment; in fact, the Judas simply completed the work already done by the Sabbath. However, the Judas, unlike their predecessors, "purified" the sound (for instance, by eliminating all references to blues...) and strengthened it with the massive use of double bass, the robust and enveloping textures of the 2 axemen, Halford's powerful falsetto... in short, here lies the foundation of the entire genre, at least that's how I see it.

  • stonecoldcrazy
    2 feb 11
However, the Priest have indeed modernized it, refining it from the strong blues influences >>>> there you go, fedeZ beat me to it! ;D

  • Weren't the Sir Lord Baltimore the true pioneers of the happy meal?

  • hjhhjij
    2 feb 11
An old and worn-out discussion this is; none of them is the true founder of metal, but all of them have contributed to laying its foundations. However, I believe that Sabbath and Judas have done so more than Rainbow and Purple (too many, wonderful, keyboards).

  • hjhhjij
    2 feb 11
Fedezan, you know Michele Campovecchio and his Tubular Bells from 1973, right? :D

  • How can I not mention Master Of Reality ... for me, already with Paranoid, the Sabbath no longer had blues in their sound (only the self-titled one I see influenced by hard blues, primarily from Cream). In Rock and Machine Head work too. In short, I continue to think that the Judas (who have been important and great nonetheless) are historically overrated, at least when discussing the musical aspect without bringing up the studded look that has set a precedent for the genre. (British Steele period if I'm not mistaken)

  • Well, I keep telling everyone on the street, at the stadium, and everywhere that HM was invented by the Sir Lord Baltimore...

  • stonecoldcrazy
    2 feb 11
But if we talk about influence on heavy metal, there are quite a few names to mention, above all: Black Sabbath, Sir Lord Baltimore, Blue Oyster Cult, Deep Purple, but in my opinion, the definitive heavy metal is Judas.

But teenagerlobotomy, what the hell are you talking about? The Rush are just two knobs like that? What have you listened to from Rush? They have 40 years of history; they've done hard rock, prog, but also pop with keyboards and synths, and so much more. So what makes you think they’re just two knobs? You can't dismiss 40 years with a couple of YouTube listens. Listen to them more closely, and you'll definitely find things that you like.
