Alfred, nothing to say, great ranking (well done for Fugazi and Lizard on the podium!)...but....Morphine, Red House Painters, Cop Shoot Cop, Built to Spill...really nada?

Great ranking, but I would have removed the Pantera :).

@Maurino: I've never really been that into Morphine and Built, to be honest, I need to listen to Red House again after such a long time. I completely forgot about Cop Shoot Cop, just like Kyuss... and who knows what else I've forgotten..:D @Prog: no, you can't mess with Pantera.:)

@alfie... I almost forgot to remind you of none other than Girls Against Boys... the problem is that there were so many at the time... anyway, when you have time, listen to the first two from Red House... I don’t think they’re exactly your “cup of tea,” but believe me, there’s such a “depth” within them that makes them “above the fray”…

In fact, I prefer records that are more direct and concise (Minutemen!), for example, I find the post-rock of Goodspeed hard to bear; maybe it's because I have a background in hc/metal listening, but I rarely get excited about lengthy albums (in the rock realm). Anyway, I intended to check out the Red House sooner or later.

Yes, yes go for RHP (you'll have to tell me... just the first one over the second, both are really nice, though, it does get a bit long)... asking for advice "as a friend": what's the best album by Motorpsycho? (ps: the triad in 4th, 5th, and 6th place is truly a "toxic cloud" - in a good way - congratulations again!)

My favorites are Blissard and Timothy's Monster, but the 2 that came after Blissard are great too. Yes, I actually had 3 mosh-pit bands in mind (Unsane in 3 makes a ruckus for 20), anyway, the ranking position doesn't matter, except for the top 2 of course :D

Thank you, Alfie, noted… during that time I recently listened to 2-3 things from a band (among many) that I missed back then: Barkmarket (a couple of albums that are now being sold at robbery prices in the collectors' market) absolutely lethal. Do you know?

Never felt it..I arrived too late in terms of age to have "live" memories of the early '90s. I started getting into music around '97/'98. I've even forgotten about Bad Religion now that I look back at the chart, but oh well..:D I'll try Barkmarket: what kind of music??

By the way: do you know when the new album by the Pop Group is coming out?? If I’m not mistaken, they were planning to do it..

The Barkmarket? From what little I've heard: rolling rhythms and a thick, distorted guitar sound that could almost be likened to the flannel-clad bands of yore, if it weren't for a nice dissonant attitude that gives them a certain intellectual edge (their vinyls, by the way, go for about 50 euros each). The new album from The Pop Group? The release was scheduled for October, but honestly, I haven't heard anything more about it (I'll see if I can find out).

Only 50 euros? :D So the new PopLP should have already been released. Anyway, I hope they do things right; I don't want to have to listen to a floppy discobolo, but I believe there are no doubts about Stewart on this. :D

The Lizard reformed last year as well, but no new albums have been released. I would gladly listen to a new release from them (perhaps hoping it’s more similar to the first 4 than to Blue and Shot). If I’m not mistaken, only a compilation has come out.

Let's forget about it, the Lizard reunion (for me, the absolute best rock band of the '90s and one of the best of all time, said without the slightest hint of exaggeration) because I didn't know anything about it at the time and I even missed them live. However, it seems that the reunion was just an opportunity to promote the re-release of the T&G LPs, and I've honestly never heard of any new material (and by the way, personally, I don't think Shot is that bad). As for the new PG LP, I've read some other little rumors around that suggest it is anything but coming soon!!! It's hard to understand what's going on in their heads.

Shot is mostly not bad, but compared to the first 4LP+1EP it loses a lot. Blue, on the other hand, is the worst in my opinion. Damn, I wanted a new album to hear the 50-year-old Yow!! :D I agree with the phrase in parentheses, an out-of-this-world band, Denison is one of the greatest riff-makers in history, no doubt.

  • maurinok60
    9 nov 10
What fascinates me the most about those four is their infinite ability to vary while remaining firmly within a single, unique, and unmistakable genre, never essentially repeating themselves. Denison's guitar interpretation, you're right, is one of the most lucid and personal in the history of rock. What further attracts me is that (if I read correctly) he had classical instrumental training (and thus exceptional technique) while in J.L. he made an extremely "economic" use of the instrument, not yielding to the slightest bit of virtuosic display, but instead showcasing a unique imagination and intelligence. I confess that I don't know Blue. Nevertheless, they just don’t make bands like this anymore; damn, they just don’t. It has nothing to do with it, but just to say, the other evening I went to see the Liars (who should theoretically be at the top of contemporary indie); well, a 6/10 in terms of appreciation, but stretched thin...

    10 nov 10
I like Liars (Sisterworld is great), but I agree they could at best clean Denison and co.'s shoes. :D Lately, I've mostly been listening to '80s music: X, Gang of Four, Replacements, etc.

I'm also, partly due to a few good vinyl purchases (this month I had a little spare change), filling in some of my gaps from the '80s... lately, Soul Asylum (

  • maurinok60
    11 nov 10
...sorry, I lost my train of thought... I was saying Soul Asylum (the first 2) and I also got "Filth" by Swans (a band I had given up on after the first EP, back in the Neolithic)... then I have a few other things coming up... Gang of Four? Among the few who truly "invented" something in rock... I still haven't figured out how they produced those guitar sounds... Replacements? A classic band that didn’t invent anything but... what extraordinary songs!! and there are still those who talk about the 80s as the dark ages of rock... go figure!!

  • Alfredo
    11 nov 10
The Gang of Four are the classic "cool" band, with abrasive and funky tracks, an amazing noise guitar, and a metronomic rhythm section featuring a bassist with a lot of "feeling."

Yes, Voodoo, I made it on the fly and just put my absolute favorites. Nirvana and Soundgarden fit in perfectly too (even though I've always loved AIC more).

    14 dec 10
Good ideas, but I haven't listened to Lungfish and Shudder To Think yet. Jawbox were good, but I wouldn't say they were among the best. I've never liked Garbage and Radiohead. The R.E.M. I prefer are the ones from the '80s.

@Progrock: Well done, but... what about Pegboy? For Alfred: just to get a bit philosophical: I recently dug up a few things that are among his favorite oddities. If you want to hear something truly out of this world, I’d suggest DEAD C (ultranoise with occasional low-fidelity garage touches), then Dadamah (one album, but it's amazing: psychedelic trance, featuring Roy Montgomery), and Bardo Pond (Bufo Alvarius: devastatingly powerful space rock)... just to name a couple or three that might entertain you.

  • Alfredo
    4 feb 11
Here, the three names you mention I haven't yet had the courage to listen to. Maybe the Dead C, with their "ultranoise," could be the first. :D

I recommend "Slow, Deep And Hard" by Type O Negative. I don't know if you like Metal, but in any case, this album is worth it because it's not the canonical, stupid, and narrow-minded metal. It's sincere... and brutal :)

I don't know Pegboy, but they might interest me a lot. Among that New Zealand stuff by Roy Montgomery, my favorites are Hash Jar Tempo, exhilarating psycho-cosmic expansions.

Stefano, I used to listen only to metal, a genre that I've (almost) abandoned. I had listened to other albums by Type O Negative, but now I don't remember much. Thanks for the suggestion; I’ll add this to my listening list too. The thing is, there’s just too much interesting music to listen to, and between work and various issues, there's always so little time... darn it!

Do you know Well Oiled by Hash Jar Tempo? If not, I recommend it.

  • maurinok60
    4 feb 11
@Progrock: Pegboy born from the ashes of those great punk rockers, the Naked Raygun (same guitarist), more or less continued the excellent discourse of melodic punk (but without chasing charts). I also really enjoy Hash Jar Tempo!! Alfred, go for DEAD C and we’ll talk about it later (damn, they create gelatinous feedback suites that feel like an amoeba in motion for over 20 minutes, but they change settings a thousand times... be brave!! The other two - especially Dadamah - are mmmuch more accessible (really!!!) The 90s are an inexhaustible mine...

No Felo, like the three mentioned by Maurinok60, I'll have to muster the courage and give it a shot! :D To be honest, I've always snubbed them because they gave me the impression (who knows why?) of being a scruffy, low-quality group, like Royal Trux..

  • maurinok60
    4 feb 11
No Alfred, don't worry, Royal Trux (I'm talking about Twin Infinitives) are truly unbearable; Hash Jar and the others are a different story....

  • Stefano90
    4 feb 11
No way! The Hash Jar Tempo are megagalactic! Well Oiled isn't even complicated... It's simply amazing :) Come on, add "Slow, Deep And Hard" and "Well Oiled" to the list... In two weeks, we'll find them at the top of this (interesting) chart.

  • ProgRock
    4 feb 11
The famous Twin Infinitives I've never managed to listen to half of, their subsequent ones are definitely more enjoyable, even if nothing more (Accelerator and Veterans of Disorder), nothing compared to the effectiveness of the Jon Spencer Blues Explosion, the other band post-Pussy Galore.

  • Stefano90
    4 feb 11
The famous Twin Infinitives is quite heavy. But it's worth it, trust me :) It's a bit like the TMR of the '90s...

@Prog: it's not that we (almost) have the same tastes!? I don't know what you think about, for example, that other great '90s trend which was slo-core... just for the record, on Sunday the 6th, Mark Kozelek will be performing an acoustic concert in a church in a small town near Bologna...

I think very highly of slo-core, Red House Painters, AMC, Low, Bedhead, and especially Codeine. I've also reviewed Idaho, for which I see there is little information available, and in my opinion, their early albums have nothing to envy from the aforementioned ones.

  • maurinok60
    5 feb 11
Bedhead and Idaho are missing, the others... classics still possessing a crystalline expressiveness; I would add (not exactly slo-core but related and collateral) Mazzy Star, featuring ex-Rain Parade and ex-Opal Dave Roback, whose Among My Swan is another one of those slow-burning gems from about fifteen years ago....

  • ProgRock
    5 feb 11
Yes, definitely affinities even if different from the others, and maybe the slo-core label is just part of their characteristics. By the way, I got Mazzy's "So Tonight That I Might See" a while ago for a little over 5 euros, perhaps the last gem stemming from Paisley Und.

@FELO: seen live at Estragon at the end of January: what can I say? if they also had the gift of brevity, they would be one of the greatest bands in history....suggestive, atmospheric, intense in their best moments...but frankly also quite verbose overall...
