Thank you… this is a ranking with a sea of ties and is largely incomplete. There are quite a few big names missing (Cabs, Clock DVA, MX 80 Sound, Residents - of whom I have too little to place them - just to mention the first that come to mind) and many others deserving of mention (we could easily reach fifty and still have more)… so much music was coming out to listen to that it was impossible to keep up… what times…

I would definitely include Talk Talk, Japan, and Simple Minds.

@Emerson: it's a ranking, as mentioned, with many limitations (like all rankings), including incompleteness, in which I included the groups mixing + or - personal taste and innovative push (in fact, "new wave" is being discussed), but: 1. Talk Talk made some splendid things but are out of time (Rage of Eden is from the second half of the 80s and I only considered a certain number of groups from the golden age 77-83 in which the TT got lost in the electropop chaos). 2. Japan: Tin Drum is the only thing of theirs that is barely acceptable; the rest is overly baroque and affected for me. 3. Simple Minds: you're right, even though I was crazy about them back then, but looking back now... less so. They can still be included even if in the backup positions. Thanks anyway.

I fully agree with the ranking; in my opinion, only the Residents and Throbbing Gristle are missing.

@Thank you for the interventions!! For the Residents: I only have "Meet the R." and "Eskimo" (I'm still on the hunt for the other greedy vinyls), which is a bit too little to place them appropriately in the rankings, though I recognize their greatness. As for TG, (the only one I know is "20 jazz etc") I have a fierce dislike tied to their Nazi/superhuman imagery, which was only reinforced by reading Reynolds' essay that we talked about a few days ago. It could have been a provocation and everything you like (but the churchy/sectarian evolution of Psychic TV makes one think otherwise), but to put it elegantly, they really get on my nerves. The Devo deserve a spot, you're right; maybe they merit it, but looking back calmly, their comic-book robotics today makes me smile a bit, and the music (which is what we ultimately discuss) pales compared to other giants of the era, too. These may be opinions of an old serious moth, but that's how I see it. Thanks again!!

You’re right, the Devo are quite far behind most of the groups mentioned (qualitatively speaking, they have nothing to do with the other group from Ohio), but they still deserve a little spot at the bottom. I’ve always viewed the TG in musical terms, and in that regard, they were great, though they leave some doubts on the human side, a lot of provocation imho. As for the Residents, well, listen to some more of their work because they truly deserve it.
