THE REVIEW

Hello to all debaser users, this is my first review I'm writing and even though there are already some on Dream Theater, this band has been very important for my musical evolution. I hope to pique your interest in this incredible band that released this beautiful album in 1992 and especially in Mike Portnoy, undoubtedly the best drummer in the world; you really should hear him!

This CD was released in 1992 for Atlantic Records and it's amazing how on this album Dream Theater, a group of guys from Boston who at the time had only released one full-length and before being called Dream Theater were known as Majesty and had released an almost impossible-to-find album, manage to explore various genres using even a saxophone in metal which previously only Pink Floyd had used in the '70s. In fact, Pink Floyd and progressive rock bands have a great influence on Dream Theater and especially on that amazing drummer named Mike Portnoy, but the other band members are also very talented and play very well. Additionally, Images & Words marks the entry of the new singer James LaBrie into the band, very talented with a warm and expressive voice that is loved by all Dream Theater fans and not only them. The genre offered is very psychedelic progressive metal/rock but not always, with lots of musical technique, just think of "Learning To Live" or "Metropolis part I," which they always perform at their concerts that I recommend you go see because you can learn a lot from these amazing musicians. The album uses many odd and even time signatures, and the keyboardist Kevin Moore is wonderfully emotional and conveys a lot of emotions. The first time I heard this album, I had goosebumps all over and felt chills because these musicians are so talented and know how to convey beautiful emotions through technique, of which they certainly do not lack: they studied at Berklee in Boston!!! One of the best music schools in the world! Very experimental "Surrounded" and "Another Day," which is the one where they use the saxophone, songs that in 1992 certainly could not sound different from what an uninterested public might expect to hear from these guys from Boston.

The influences also derive a lot from Rush and partly from metal bands like Iron Maiden, Metallica, Motorhead, and so on. In short, this album has deeply marked me and I hope it can convey to you the same emotions it conveyed to me the first time I heard it, and it would be nice to recommend it to metalheads and non-metalheads alike because it is truly a beautiful CD, very technical and experimental!

This CD is a true masterpiece that will go down in history as one of the best progressive CDs.

Forget about those who tell you they’re only technique and no substance!

Pull Me Under... simply gives you goosebumps.

Take the Time... a sort of programmatic manifesto of what Theater's music is.
