Listening to this CD, only one thought keeps going through my head: how did they manage to release such a beautiful collection of songs?!?
Alright, maybe I exaggerated, I'll try to express my ideas in a neutral manner, without too much reverence to them... now enough with the chatter and let's begin.
It starts with Pull Me Under, with which, in my opinion, you can already guess what genre is being dealt with; as for the song, nothing really special, except for the instrumental start where the guitar arpeggios emerge harmoniously.
The second song is Another Day - which I believe holds the crown as the best song of the entire album - here the keyboard stands out very well, instilling a sense of tranquility and relaxation, while there's nothing to say about the vocal part, where the singer manages to cover a remarkable range! Continuing, we have Take The Time and Surrounded in which the guitar's role in both is appreciated, where you can see how the solos fit very well with the musical context. The fifth song is the umpteenth masterpiece of Dream Theater, the only one able to compete with Another Day... I'm obviously talking about Metropolis pt.1, here the band manages to bring out every single instrument and every single note played, with particular appreciation for the drums and guitar. Nothing special, however, in Under a Glass Moon, where for the first time any band could perform this song without too much difficulty!! I think the same about the song: Wait For Sleep, where a base reminiscent of Profondo Rosso can be glimpsed in the intro. While there's nothing to say, instead, for the last song, Learning to Live. The musical base is impressive, where the keyboard stands out very well, leaving the listener speechless in a state of wonder and amazement!
In short, concluding, I believe that with this CD, the American band has confirmed its domination in the world of progressive metal!!
This CD is a true masterpiece that will go down in history as one of the best progressive CDs.
Forget about those who tell you they’re only technique and no substance!
"You have to listen to this music not with your ears but with your heart."
"In my opinion, they are the best existing band and nothing will change my mind."
"Images And Words is an album from which every musician could learn something."
"In this, as in no other Dream Theater record, chilling atmospheres and unmistakably original sounds are created."
Pull Me Under... simply gives you goosebumps.
Take the Time... a sort of programmatic manifesto of what Theater's music is.
"It’s the album that cements Dream Theater as one of the fathers of prog metal, placing them alongside sacred monsters like Rush and Neal Morse."
"'Surrounded' is a total exaltation of the vocal capabilities of the then twenty-nine-year-old singer. Soft tones and sung whispers, the pace rises and the vocalist’s acrobatics increase."
