voivod -phobos
A punch in the face; a gigantic auditory boulder. An exasperated meteorite of deepest black. Beyond the Heavy Thrash of "Killing Technology" and "Dimension Hatross"; light years away from the Progressive sound of "Nothingface" and "The Outer Limits". "Phobos" is the ninth album by the Canadians; the most challenging to listen to. Claustrophobic, with a closed, oppressive production. Eric's haunting voice, Piggy's obsessive guitar riffs, at times very close to the heavy chill of Industrial Metal. The "beyond" drumming of Away. All ingredients that combined create a chilling sonic magma: terrifying, terrifying. I only need to mention the eight minutes of the track Bacteria. Personally, among the five best albums ever released by Voivod...FORLORN... more

Technically prepared and competent. I don't know if they are the largest Italian group, but they are definitely in the Olympus. Although personally, they have never excited me too much. I find them too cold and lacking those nuances that bring warmth and communication to their music. For this reason, one star less. Just personal feelings. Demetrio Stratos, however, is one of the most charismatic and unique figures in all of Italian music. more

The Swell are humble and intelligent. They know what melancholy/sadness is, but they don't get down; they dance (in the dark and even in the sun). more

Understated. Vocally stunning, musically impressive hits especially in the '80s, up until a tragic yet moving death on stage, just as he always dreamed. more
Gentle Giant -In A Glass House
One of my favorites from the Gigantone, so much so that it would knock their brilliant debut off a hypothetical podium. So many brilliant ideas, melodies, rhythms, and concepts in this album from a band at the height of their splendor. More mature and certainly less "peculiar" compared to the first two albums (especially), but strikingly inspired. The absence of Phil Shulman on horns has been absorbed without problems; he said goodbye after "Octopus" to become a full-time professor. I give a happy round of applause especially to 4 of the 6 tracks: "Experience," a perfect synthesis of their style (introduction/ minstrel sketch/ rock turnaround + various virtuosos), "A Reunion," two minutes of Kerry Minnear-esque sounds that confirm their skill even in simpler songs, "A Way of Life," which is incredible both for the intro—what is it, Dance-Prog? Who knows—and for all the epic, ecstatic, and moving "Renaissance-folk-minstrel" section, and finally the title track, one of their top 10 pieces at the very least, where an electrifying minstrel folk-rock wonderfully culminates in a rock track with a great groove that, in my opinion, would have topped the charts just with that section. A masterpiece. more

Modena City Ramblers
Until the off-field good folk protest music not without a vein of goliardic spirit. The double feature "La grande famiglia" "Terra e libertà" are albums I grew up with and that shaped me, so I hold a particular fondness for them. I vote for Modena with Cisco; without him, they are just a shadow of what they used to be. more
