Perhaps many people still have not understood that many actions could rely on one of those factors that are never taken into account but which individuals might utilize at the right moments of the day. Deviance, already from its very name, suggests a negative character and is inversely proportional to the general norms of any International country. By deviance we mean that process through which we, human beings endowed with reason and intellect, intervene in a society or on a particular individual, through personal actions that deviate from the general norms of behavior and lead along one of those paths where some form of sanction is encountered.
<..
I can believe it, unknown people have stolen my car. I had parked it along the street to reach, in company of my girlfriend, the cinema and to spend a different afternoon. It had never happened to me>>.
The delinquents committed a deviant act, going not only against what is written in the Italian Constitution but also against the owner of the car. Let's carefully analyze the phrase "It had never happened to me". Do you think that stealing a car is a fairly easy feat or simply an act that happens often? It’s an act that requires prudence and, if successful, gravely shocks the common conscience, because we consider it vandalism or even better and more simply criminal. But remember, deviance is not only that process that goes against the law or that severely shocks public opinion. Forms of deviance are behaviors that deviate from what is common.
Recently, I have witnessed types of behavior that have shocked not only the conscience of an individual but also that of society in general. Excluding a person, showing disrespect, throwing a punch, introducing a topic disliked by most people are all forms of behavior as well as deviance that hinder our expectations: there is a reversal of the thought we set upon any person, which we have stored in our mind and which somehow we need whenever we feel the extreme necessity to represent that person:
1 <..
successfully lifting my spirits. (conclusion) You don’t know what I am going through (preface), only she knew and did everything to join the conversation and try to help me (development)>>
2 <..
in a way I would never, ever have expected. (conclusion) You don’t know what I am going through (preface), she didn’t care at all and tried repeatedly to change the subject (development)>>
It’s useless for me to tell you that there is a big difference "in how the facts went" ;). In the first case, we witness a successful type of behavior as well as of notable craftsmanship and help regarding us. The second is simply deviant and rightly struck our expectations gravely. Depending on the situations, UNINTENTIONALLY, we attribute sanctions or rewards to the society around us. For both definitions, refer to one of my previous interventions. Besides them, there are also condemnations. Poor behaviors, of very bad taste and that irreparably offend the common conscience, make it so that we, being owners of our "I," decide to distance ourselves from people who, voluntarily or involuntarily, have adopted or repeatedly adopt them.
<..
I sensed that one of these did everything possible to exclude me. We entered a bar, he offered to everyone except me. But not only that, since he is someone I don't get along with very well, I tried to engage in a conversation with others but this last one didn’t give me the chance for that to happen, ultimately highlighting the contempt he feels towards me both "symbolically" (with discriminatory gestures directed at his friends that aimed to mock both my "I" and the "Me") and "verbally" (with little unpleasant jokes)>>
There are always forms of deviance, which clash with the individual's conscience and sometimes put him in situations of submission or discrimination. I wouldn’t want to sound trivial, but since this intervention is mine and I don’t want it to be entirely objective and concrete in every context, I think that globally, right-wing currents, or better, totalitarian societies, adopt more forms of deviance than others. [...]
Other forms of deviance, connected to our daily habitual life:
<..>
Certainly, if we stay at our own home, we could also modify our behavior (: But imagine we have had the fortune to be invited to a dinner offered by the wealthiest capitalists of the country. Will we behave as we usually do at home, or adopt behaviors that our "I" shows little interest in and can’t wait to return to our daily roles? Why improve our character when our "I" feels in difficulty and we only privilege what is our "Me"? Appearing before those who possess a different "I" and "Me" is of considerable importance in a society like ours. Some have a higher self-esteem, others less, mainly depending on their social skills and the "power" they hold in their hands.
HYPOTHESIS: Let’s pretend that in the middle of that same dinner, a proletarian and a capitalist made an unpleasant joke. How would the other guests react? Someone tells me that most people would tolerate more the behavior of the little lord capitalist at the expense of the young proletarian. But why all this? Why? Well, probably, we would assume very likely. The capitalist appears a priori as a confident little lord, capable in various domains of daily life and well-off financially. However, that joke is tolerated. Conclusion? After the dinner, proletarians and capitalists would speak behind his back, carefully and mutually ensuring that he never finds out about all this. Keep in mind that their discussions would never descend into tasteless vulgarity, for fear that their brains might reveal a judgment that could instinctively highlight the importance of it in his presence. And if that joke "slipped out" of a young proletarian, how would they react? Surely, a proletarian like him, after the dinner, would kindly congratulate the other, saying: <..
dude, take care ;)>>. And a capitalist? He would accept it, already knowing in advance that, having been a proletarian himself performing such a gesture, they are considered, a priori, inferior both socially and economically. Keep in mind that I WOULD NOT REASON LIKE THIS: "nevertheless, these theses operate in the world we live in." But who tells us otherwise, if we reason carefully, that a proletarian must necessarily be inferior in various aspects of daily life compared to a capitalist? Who tells us that a proletarian is used to a rather mediocre type of behavior towards a capitalist? "It’s the future that assigns and places us in one of the two sectors. I will accept both just to keep being myself, risking at least one of those deviance behaviors that would only hinder the general norms of daily behavior, and I will fight against this system of thinking everyone as inferior a priori and wrongly, every cultural model, every judgment, every moment of situation." [cit darkHaem]
Having said that, I conclude by indicating various types of deviance. But before doing so, I introduce two other highly necessary factors to understand deviance itself better. The concept of meta-cultural and that of institutionalized means. The meta-cultural corresponds to our way of interacting with society, aiming to achieve our future goals in the best possible way. The institutionalized means are the ways through which we reach these goals and obviously answer the question "how?"
The first way of adaptation to our daily life is conformity and involves accepting both the cultural goals and the institutionalized means. The young person who received good education, finds a good job, and makes the right career accepts both the goal of economic success and the legitimate means to obtain it. Note that conformity is the only non-deviant way of adaptation.
Instead, the first way of deviant adaptation is innovation, which involves accepting cultural goals but rejecting institutionalized means. To acquire wealth, the innovator uses new, often illegitimate systems: criminal organization, blackmail, embezzlement.
A second way of deviant adaptation is ritualism, which involves rejecting cultural goals but accepting, sometimes excessively and obsessively, the institutionalized means. The corporate bureaucrat ends up stifling initiative amid a sea of papers and risks preventing the achievement of the main goal: profit.
A third way of deviant adaptation is resignation, which involves rejecting both cultural goals and institutionalized means. The most obvious examples of resignation are the marginalized: vagabonds, alcoholics, schizophrenics, drug addicts.
The last way of deviant adaptation is rebellion, readers, which involves rejecting both cultural goals and institutionalized means as in the previous case, but also replacing them with new goals and new means.
But where could deviance originate?
Friends, I admit you might be tired of reading darkHaem’s opinion but please make a small effort, I care more about this intervention than myself. I wouldn’t want to seem superior in any way, I am a free thinker, who manages fairly well writing and telling one of his many jokes ;) (sometimes very nihilistic).
Deviance comes from many factors, multiple ones, that you would almost never finish reading; however, I will summarize a few. Deviance derives from specific physical traits, from a particular physical constitution, from the lack of norms and laws in a society, from absent, fragile, or conflicting social relations, from the weakness of the bond between individual and society, from the conflict between cultural goals and institutionalized means, from conflicts between subculture norms and those of the dominant culture, from rebellion against norms imposed by the ruling class.
Deviance is a type of behavior that diverges from the general norms common to all, and because of it, the individual who enacts it can be isolated or subjected to treatments—curative, corrective, or punitive.
I thank you if you have had the patience to read everything; I can only say I care about you. I hope to improve for 2009, hoping that university will give me even more, even if I am not attending much. For now, this remains one of the best interventions I have ever made myself. Of course, there are still many gaps that need to be filled in a decisive and secure way.
N.B. This intervention is also dedicated to all those who, upon reaching a certain age, still "don’t know how to live" and "don’t know how to admit their mistakes."
