Therion is a Swedish symphonic metal band formed by Christofer Johnsson in 1987, noted for combining metal with orchestral, choral and operatic elements and for occult/mythological lyrical themes.

Founded and led by Christofer Johnsson; early career rooted in death metal, later shifted to symphonic/gothic metal. Thomas Karlsson has frequently contributed lyrics and esoteric themes (runic/Kabbalistic material) in collaboration with the band.

DeBaser hosts a decent set of user reviews on Therion that emphasize the band's move from death metal to orchestral, symphonic works. Classic albums frequently praised include Theli, Vovin, Lemuria and Sirius B. Some later releases (example: Sitra Ahra) receive sharp criticism. Common topics: operatic choirs, orchestration, occult/rune and Kabbalah themes.

For:Fans of symphonic/gothic metal, listeners who like orchestral/operatic metal and esoteric/occult themes.

"I know it myself, I was hung on the wind-swept trunk for nine whole nights, wounded by a spear and given to Odin, myself to myself, on that tree no one knows where its roots rise. With bread they did not satiate me nor with meats. I looked down, made the Runes rise, Calling them I did, and I fell from there."
