Three years after the astounding success of "Iowa" (2001), Slipknot returns with a new album that, in my modest opinion, surprises anyone who thinks they understand Slipknot's music. This is an album that, when compared with "Iowa" and the self-titled "Slipknot", holds its own in terms of hardness, brutality, and violence up to a point, because there are too many pause songs. The title of this album is "Vol. 3: (The Subliminal Verses)" and I never quite understood what the hell they want to say with this title.
As in all Slipknot albums, the first song is always slow, and this time "Prelude 3.0" (this is the title of the song) seems to introduce an epic album. In "Iowa", the first was "(515)" and I consider it one of the most chilling songs in history because Corey's screams terrify me, while in "Slipknot" the first song was "742617000027" and I still need to figure out if it's someone in Slipknot's credit card number. Anyway, the song was very strange, but back to "Vol. 3: (The Subliminal Verses)". After "Prelude 3.0", there are four songs that in my opinion are among the 20 best Slipknot songs ever. These songs, in order, are "The Blister Exists", "Three Nil", "Duality", and "Opium Of The People". I liked all four songs as soon as I heard them for the first time. Among these, "Duality" is the most famous because it was the first single released, and fortunately for Slipknot and the "Maggots," it was incredibly successful (even in Italy, as it entered the top 30 in the alternative music charts). "The Blister Exists" and "Three Nil" are performed live quite often, while "Opium Of The People" was never really talked about.
The sixth song on the album is "Circle", written by Corey during the "Iowa" tour. It's a very slow song, but it preludes to "Welcome", which has a unique brutality. As the eighth song of the CD, we find "Vermilion", the second single released. Very slow song at the beginning, but from the middle it transforms into a small masterpiece. Next, we find "Pulse Of The Maggots", probably dedicated to thousands of "Maggots" around the world. The song doesn't drive me crazy, but I accept it. The tenth song of the CD is "Before I Forget", the third single released and in my opinion the best song on the CD. This song is quite brutal, although it doesn't match the brutality of "Welcome" or "The Blister Exists", but it's a great song, and indeed, thanks to this song, Slipknot is nominated for a "Grammy Award" in the "Best Metal Performance" category (I think that's what the category is called).
Moving on, we find "Vermilion, pt. 2", which according to some sources was released as the fourth single in very few copies and there is a video, which I possess. Slow but beautiful song. The twelfth song of the album is "The Nameless", an absurd song, because it starts with a pounding rhythm and dual vocal style and in the chorus, it becomes a song very catchy even to the faint-hearted. "The Nameless" is a song from which a video was extracted, but not for this album, rather for the double live released on November 1, 2005, "Slipknot: 9.0 Live". "The Virus Of Life" is the penultimate song on the album. I can say very little about this song because frankly, I don't like it very much, so I would immediately talk about the last song on the album "Danger - Keep Away", which vaguely reminds me of "Dream On" by Depeche Mode.
In conclusion, summing up, it can be said that more than brutal, this is a very energetic album, with some pause songs probably inserted to give listeners a chance to catch their breath. One last thing I want to point out is that, in a few copies, this album was distributed with 3 extra songs, about which I can say very little, actually nothing. These songs are "Don't Get Close", "Requiem", and "Scream", the soundtrack of the film "Scream 3". Goodbye Everyone!!!!!!!!
Vol.3 The Subliminal Verses... is nothing more than a re-presentation, in an even more commercial key, of what the group has already done in the past.
After all, just watch the Duality video to understand how pathetic and commercial these characters have become.
THE SLIPKNOT HAVE MATURED. THEY HAVE LOST IN MALICE BUT THE VIOLENCE ... HAS SWITCHED TO A 'PSYCHOLOGICAL' ONE IN VOL.3.
Finally, you can hear all nine musicians in this album.
Forget "Iowa," the group’s personality this time is even more emphasized than in the past, and it seems above all that they have finally hit the right path.
An album recommended even (or especially) to those who no longer believed in them.
The sounds, the melodies, the riffs, too commercial to be Slipknot, would leave anyone shocked.
I recommend it only to fans of commercial Nu Metal like Limp Bizkit, because this album is indeed the flag bearer of band commercialization.
"Every record reviewer gets what they deserve..."
"Don Lurido didn’t seem to take him seriously and responded with 'Forgive him, Father, for he does not know what he says.'"
