Idea by Malcolm McLaren, idea by Malcolm McLaren, fuck Malcolm McLaren; or maybe not?
A few days before the revolution that split history in two, this strange "bootleg" with a white cover appeared in some London stores.
Indeed, the legendary and alternative debut of the Sex Pistols.
Spunk contained the first mixes directed by Goodman of the famous tracks that would later form the tracklist of Nevermind The Bollocks, Here's The Sex Pistols.
They still have the provisional names and haven't been christened yet (for example, Anarchy In The UK is Nookie).
But what makes this rarity special is the rich and almost tangible sound of Glen Matlock's bass. Before he left the caravan due to internal disputes, he made his contribution.
In Nevermind, the bass parts were played by Steve Jones.
Many claim that it was actually a commercial gimmick by the manager and not a collection of demos, precisely because the quality of the tracks was considered too high.
In the years to come, this Spunk was published and expanded several times, until they included in the set the real reason why—if you love the band—you should listen to it.
A huge, full, totally out-of-control rendition of No Fun by the Stooges that gives you goosebumps.
The Pistols never sounded so abrasive.
This is a recording dating back to 1976 (reads the back of the cover).
You'd recognize those vocals among the screams of a thousand crazy people shouting in unison.
No Fun also ended the band's career, among a delirious Winterland Ballroom in San Francisco and a disillusioned, tired, bored Lydon.
The end of the Sex Pistols crystallized in his mind precisely during this performance.
"This is the last song, the very last, because I'm a lazy bastard"
Despite the health issues, that day he gave his all, and all his frustration seemed to come out and go back in continuously. At the end, he said into the microphone:
"Ever get the feeling you've been cheated?"
No Fun, indeed; no fun having Sid stoned beside you, being manipulated like a puppet, making money for the vultures behind the scenes.
The King is gone but he's not forgotten.
