Yesterday I watched "The Good Shepherd - L'ombra del potere" because Matt Damon stars in it, and I've been catching up on several of his films I hadn't seen.
I don't feel like writing a review, but I probably should, since there are already two reviews here that do it no justice at all.
The actors are all great, there's also William Hurt (r.i.p. A real guarantee), there's a John Turturro playing a truly vicious agent who slaps and backhands during an interrogation as if there were no tomorrow, one of the Baldwins with his mocking air, Joe Pesci in a small cameo, Jon Voight's daughter (who I've always found really annoying, for some reason...), and Robert De Niro, who not only directed but also acts (impeccably as usual).
What can I say besides the plot, the length, the critiques, nothing—only that a particular phrase by Ovid from "Le Metamorfosi" stuck with me (maybe because I've become a vdm #maybe) and is put into the mouth of the protagonist (a failed poet, reduced to being a secret agent), spoken in front of one of his beloved:
"I took a handful of sand
and showed it to her,
foolishly asking for as many years of life
as there are grains of sand.
I forgot to ask
that they be years of youth..."
