I recently rewatched "The Hateful Eight," an amazing film Jennifer Jason Leigh – Jim Jones at Botany Bay (feat. Kurt Russell / The Hateful Eight) In the following scene, bounty hunter John Ruth (Kurt Vogel Russell) grabs and destroys the guitar that Daisy Domergue (Jennifer Leigh Morrow aka Jennifer Jason Leigh) was playing, which was an authentic "Martin" guitar from 1870 lent by the "Martin Guitar Museum" in Nazareth, Pennsylvania. In the original script, the instrument was supposed to be replaced by a replica before the scene of its destruction, but due to a misunderstanding, this was not communicated to Kurt Russell, who continued as scripted. Obviously, everyone on set was quite shocked by the event, and Leigh's incredulous reaction in that scene was genuine. According to sound editor Mark Ulano, "Tarantino was standing in a corner with a little smirk on his lips, satisfied with the performance he had gotten." Dick Boak, the director of the museum, described the damage as "irreparable" (as can be clearly seen in the film) and stated that he had not been informed that the guitar, or at least its replica, would be destroyed. Following the incident, the museum decided not to lend antique instruments to film crews anymore (and I guess, you know...) and that’s that...
