Yes, it sounds like the beginning of a Springsteen song, and indeed, that's the aim: to imitate the Boss, in voice and writing. The sound engineer Mark Saunders had the presence of mind to hit the "REC" button to capture the moment. And indeed, Bowie said, "I'll do it like someone else, just because I feel like it." His voice transforms into that of Bob Dylan, then into that of Tom Waits, into that of Lou Reed, into that of Iggy Pop.
