He didn’t have the aggressiveness of Sonny Rollins, nor the fire of John Coltrane, nor the touch of Stan Getz, but he was probably one of the most sensitive tenor saxophonists of hard bop and modern jazz.

At twenty, he played in Paul Gayten's Rhythm and Blues orchestra, and after a brief collaboration with Lester Young, from '51 to '53 he played with Dexter Gordon and Max Roach.

The collaboration with Max Roach represented an important personal experience for Mobley, as both sought something that musically transcended the be bop genre.

He had the honor of being one of the many tenor saxophonists who at one point were part of Miles Davis's group, namely saxophonists of the caliber of Sonny Rollins, Wayne Shorter, Dexter Gordon, George Coleman, Sam Rivers, not to mention the legendary John Coltrane, and that's it...
