Alan Wilder was fascinated by the power of Frankie Goes To Hollywood and Trevor Horn's production, filled with those beats that he so desired on Some Great Reward. People Are People indeed bears its influence. For the song's intro, the band had no qualms about using anything that could produce the right sounds (even spoons from the kitchen of the studio). Martin Gore, on the other hand, cites the song as one that hasn’t stood the test of time and thus does not appreciate. He finds that the lyrics he himself wrote come off as not very mysterious by his standards and somewhat descriptive in a way that feels adolescent. However, Martin must admit that this album pushed them in the right direction. It pushed them to be the true Depeche Mode, those with a dark and sensual character. And then Master And Servant and Blasphemous Rumours annoyed the right amount of stuffy press. Depeche Mode - People Are People (Remastered Video)
