Emily Remler – Firefly (1981)
"I may seem like a nice girl from NY,
but inside I’m a big black guy
of 50 years
with an enormous thumb,
kind of like Wes Montgomery."
This is how Emily Remler defined herself; she was born a year before me and started playing guitar in '67, reaching very high levels in the jazz scene, so much so that a fellow great guitarist of the time called her the new "superstar" of the guitar.
After graduating from music college, she began performing in blues and jazz clubs in New Orleans.
Musically, she drew inspiration from John William Coltrane, Miles Dewey Davis III, and of course her beloved John Leslie "Wes" Montgomery, to whom she dedicated "East to Wes."
In '85, "Down Beat Jazz Magazine" awarded her the title of 'Guitarist Of The Year.'
She was also the guitarist for Astrud Gilberto.
She recorded 7 albums of jazz standards, hard bop, and fusion before we lost her in '90 at just thirty-two years old, during a tour in Australia due to a heart attack (possibly related to heroin abuse) and nothing.
