The piece was chosen by Terry Gilliam for the tragicomic dissonance created between its sweet and nostalgic tone and the dark, disorienting atmospheres of the film; the idea came to him one day while he was on a beach in Port Talbot, Wales, as Gilliam himself stated:
“Port Talbot is a steel town, with gray metal dust everywhere. Even the beach is completely covered in it and is black. The sun was setting, it was quite beautiful. The contrast was extraordinary. An image sprang to my mind of a guy sitting on this dreary beach with a portable radio, playing strange South American escape songs, like Brazil. Somehow the music transported him and made the world around him less gray.” (quoted from the web)
