10 Magnificent Losers. 10 Stories That Need to Be Told. 7) Darby Crash The Germs Lexicon Devil
Because dates matter. They matter, damn it!
Take this one: December 7, 1980. Darby had everything planned out well, but he was one to rarely do things by accident. Even back when he was just Jean Paul Beham, he was hanging out with that other madman, his friend Pat Smear, at that weird school in Santa Monica where they practiced Scientology methods. They had already set up that strange "blue circle" thing and he and Pat would show up as God and Jesus. Punk wasn't his main source of inspiration, but punk was the natural outlet for a band like the Germs. They made only one record, but what a record! After GI, nothing was the same. And then came concerts, documentaries, articles. Hype, hype, hype. And important women around them: Belinda Carlisle, Penelope Spheeris, Diana Grant, Lorna Doom (where are you, Lorna?), Donna Rhia, Casey Cola. Though they say Darby was gay and had kicked Don Bolles out to make room for a surfer, Rob Henley, whom he had a crush on. But who gives a fuck! He had dropped everything and gone to London. But in London, he wasn't doing shit, so he came back home. He went to Pat and said, "let's start a band, do a couple of gigs. Just to make some money, so I can buy enough drugs to blow my brains out." And so they did. On December 3rd, the concert took place; Darby was able to buy $400 worth of stuff. He prepared everything meticulously: he made a suicide pact with Casey Cola (but then injected her with less heroin; she had to survive. She had to survive and tell everything), set up the room, posed like Jesus, and injected enough stuff into his veins to blow his brains out. And as his mind melted away, he laughed, laughed and thought, "tomorrow, tomorrow everyone will talk about it. It will be a blast."
But tomorrow was December 8, 1980, and that asshole Mark Chapman had made an appointment, he and his gun, in front of the Dakota Building. So that day, that jerk Chapman fucked over two at once: John Lennon and Darby Crash.
Yes, dates are important.
