The first product of the Mancunian band was released in 1994. Let's take a look at the history of this band that forever changed the course of English music and still remains one of the most loved internationally. Noel Gallagher is a more or less normal guy, apart from having thrown a bag of flour on his headmaster, he’s a good student and plays his pieces with an acoustic guitar in his room. Liam Gallagher, on the other hand, is a wild teenager, rough, heedless of rules, with an angelic voice but more interested in girls and football. These two kids grow up in the suburbs of Manchester, among drugs, alcohol, and with a violent father who comes home from the pubs drunk and beats their beloved mother Peggy. For this reason, one day Noel Gallagher will throw his father Thomas down the stairs, knocking him out. However, at a Stone Roses concert in 1987, little Gallagher opens his eyes and falls in love with music, deciding that he would become a rock'n'roll star. So, on a distant day in 1991, during a demonstration, bassist Paul McGuigan (Guigsy) proposes to Liam to join the band "The Rain," then composed of him, Paul McGuigan (Guigsy), guitarist Paul Arthurs (Bonehead), and drummer Tony McCarroll. Liam accepts the proposal, and after changing the group's name to "Oasis," begins his ascent in the challenging world of rock'n'roll. Unfortunately, the band does not have the expected success. Liam started writing his first lyrics, but without the desired effect. Noel Gallagher, hearing them once at one of their performances, describes them as "SHIT."
The younger brother, Liam, then asked him to be part of the group, and Noel agreed, provided he wrote all the song lyrics. Thus, the Oasis were born. We're around 1991/1992, and Noel begins to compose his first works (See The Sun, Color My Life, Better Let You Know, Life In Vain, and many others), and the group proceeds with its phase of evolution. In 1992, there are certainly two important dates to remember: January 15, the day of their first concert at Boardwalk, and June 12, the day the local newspaper dedicates an article to them, but despite all this, the five beer drinkers remain anonymous. 1993, however, is the year of the breakthrough, precisely on May 31, the band performs in a competition for emerging groups attended by the director of Creation Record (not Noel's), who then becomes the band's first record label. On October 23, the contract for six albums is elegantly signed. "I made them believe I had already written about sixty songs when I had about ten, and they bought it," said guitarist Noel in 2002. There was only one step left to bring these young Englishmen to glory: the recording of the first album!
This is an LP to have and cherish, a true musical pearl that even metal lovers like most of you DeBaser users should collect. In short, this is a gem, an inimitable work that has marked music history, having sold even more than "Revolver," a Beatles record. The CD starts great right away and opens with "Rock'n'Roll Star", a true anthem to the will to make it, an energetic and joy-filled song often used as the opening or closing of concerts. "Toniiiight I'm A Rooock'n'Rooool Staaaar!!!!" shouts Liam Gallagher, the sensations this track gives are unparalleled. However, with the next track, we find the first "hole," the first "misstep" of the CD. "Shakermaker" is a rather boring and repetitive song, the first then accused of plagiarism for its significant resemblance to the soundtrack of the Coca-Cola commercial. But Noel's idea of singing "Now I Only Drink Pepsi" is as brilliant as it is offensive. Ladies and gentlemen, I present to you the Oasis' symbolic song, which, according to a recent survey, is the fans' most beloved song, "Live Forever." An ovation for a unique, eternal track, written by "The Chief" Noel Gallagher in the hospital when he broke a foot for his beloved mother Peggy. Besides being written for Mrs. Gallagher, this song was also created for the "Greats" of music and people who, in some way, "will live forever." From 1995 to 2000, during the performance of this absolute masterpiece, images of these people were shown on stage. Final photo: John Lennon! In fact, the single's CD has the image of the grandmother's house where the legendary John grew up. In the video, we see drummer Tony McCarroll being buried by the other band members as if to announce his departure.
"Up In The Sky" is a very energetic and rock song, often performed together with "Round Are Way" as if they were one song. "Columbia" is a good song but nothing more, written by Liam. Then we find the legendary single "Supersonic", the first ever released by the band. The video is shot on a rooftop, as the Beatles did with "Let It Be." The "Girl called Elsa" is just a dog wandering around the recording studios. Nothing to say about "Bring It On Down", simple but listenable compared instead to "Cigarettes And Alcohol", an anthem to drugs, cigarettes, and alcohol. Another plagiarism accusation for the guitar riff, a bit too similar to that of a T-Rex song. "Digsy's Dinner" and "Slide Away" are two very rock and enjoyable songs, and a comment certainly deserves the beautiful "Married With Children", an acoustic song where Liam’s vocal cords stand out. "Your Music Shite" is a phrase said by Noel's ex during one of their arguments. In short, a golden record, wonderful, that will remain in history. To all those who hate Oasis, I say: "To each their own tastes, but as Noel said a month ago: not even the Beatles, the Stone Roses, and the Rolling Stones would have managed to make such a debut CD. "And he's right! ROCK'N'ROLL!!!!
Cheers!
This album is just noise, and nothing more.
Maybe I’ve been a bit harsh, but every time I try to listen to this CD, I get a headache...
Oasis are not innovators, they don’t experiment, they just want to hit you with simple songs that are instant classics and stick to your ears and heart at first listen.
Definitely Maybe is a condensation of the best English music produced from the sixties to the early ’70s, with maximal guitar and vocal volumes, psychedelia, violence, and candor merging in the grooves of DM.
It’s listenable, but it’s certainly not a “timeless” or a “masterpiece” as I’ve heard some say.
Oasis did better in the later years which is why they remain one of my favorite bands.
"The first song is 'Rock'N'Roll Star,' a historic piece by Oasis, which delivers a great adrenaline rush."
"'Bring It On Down' expresses all the anger of the English working class, which is kindly invited to 'destroy it.'"
"Perhaps this judgment is also influenced by the fact that in the 10 years that followed, Oasis shifted gears musically and captivated us with albums of a vastly different level."
"Track number three is indeed 'Live Forever': a great song that became the true anthem of a generation."
