Album: "Definitely Maybe"
Artist: Oasis
Year: 1994
Genre: Rock'n'Roll
Number of Tracks: 11
In 1994, after various live performances in pubs in their city, and some amateurly recorded demos, Oasis debuted with their first real studio album, "Definitely Maybe", a result of the rock spirit and British attitude that animates the members of the Manchester band.
The song that opens the dance is titled "Rock'n'Roll Star", an energetic and rocking track, where Noel's desire to flee the city and become a star in the rock firmament (something that would happen only a year later) stands out. The track that follows is "Shakermaker", a cheerful ballad that doesn't detract from the album; rather, it adds to it thanks to Liam's splendid vocal performances expressed at their best (in this work, Ourkid sings all the songs, unlike subsequent albums where Noel will also take part in the singing).
Here we come to the masterpiece, "Live Forever", splendid, wonderful, tireless... but what sense does it make to list all these adjectives? This "wonder", released in the summer of the same year as the album's release, is the group's first great masterpiece, a song dedicated to Noelās (and therefore also Liamās) mother, which tends to emphasize the desire not to die, but to fly and thus live (in live performances between '95 and '00, during the performance of this song, images of some "greats of music" were projected on the screens, with John Lennon as the final photo, as a tribute to the great artist tragically deceased in '80). "Up In The Sky" and "Columbia" relate a bit to "Shakermaker", meaning they neither add nor subtract anything particular to the product. Instead, "Supersonic", the band's first single, returns to well-distinguished levels; the track in question is perhaps one of the best on the album, where we can clearly recognize a certain resemblance to the style of the Stone Roses.
After listening somewhat reluctantly to "Bring It Down", the album's only discard, we clearly recognize the guitar riff from "Bang A Gong Get It On" by T-Rex, shamelessly stolen by Noel for "Cigarettes&Alcohol". However, the plagiarism committed by The Chief is forgivable, and it doesn't detract any points from the track in question, a legendary masterpiece that praises cigarettes and drug use, as demonstrated by the video shot in a London nightclub with 500 people attending. Obviously, as with all other tracks, one can perceive that rough and raw rock, which wonāt be found easily in later works (in this album, only electric guitars are used).
After a funny and lively "Digsy Diner", we arrive at my favored single, "Slide Away". Romantic, passionate, sincere, it almost seems to describe a girl, but instead, we are talking about a song, a great song, in which, although there is a certain sweetness within the lyrics, the sound is always very rock, which however does not diminish the track, on the contrary. "Let me be the one, who shines with you, and we can slide away".. whether you like it or not, this is poetry, and I will never understand why you condemn poetry. The album concludes with "Married With Childre", this time a calm and relaxing song that leaves the listener with a goodbye: "Goodbye i'm going home".
Thus ends a great album, an album that somehow, whether you like it or not, awakened British music, which was dormant at the time, and still added a certain beauty to the rock world.
I wonder why you condemn this band, I will always wonder as a young and inexperienced person in the field of music. Perhaps because they are arrogant? Perhaps because they proclaim themselves the best band in the world? Indeed, your reasons are not to be discarded, but who did better than them in those years? Who knew how to best express the needs and feelings of the British people? I want the names! I want to know who did better than them in the field of rock that year.
P.S. I EXPLICITLY APOLOGIZE FOR MY REPETITION, NOT ONLY FOR MY PREVIOUSLY PUBLISHED REVIEW MONTHS AGO BUT FOR ALL THE OTHER REVIEWS ON THE ALBUM, TOO MANY, I ADMIT. HOWEVER, I FELT THE NEED TO MAKE A BETTER ONE, WHERE I COULD EXPRESS MY OPINIONS NOT ONLY ON THE ALBUM BUT ALSO ON THE BAND.
Cheers!
This album is just noise, and nothing more.
Maybe Iāve been a bit harsh, but every time I try to listen to this CD, I get a headache...
Oasis are not innovators, they donāt experiment, they just want to hit you with simple songs that are instant classics and stick to your ears and heart at first listen.
Definitely Maybe is a condensation of the best English music produced from the sixties to the early ā70s, with maximal guitar and vocal volumes, psychedelia, violence, and candor merging in the grooves of DM.
Itās listenable, but itās certainly not a ātimelessā or a āmasterpieceā as Iāve heard some say.
Oasis did better in the later years which is why they remain one of my favorite bands.
"The first song is 'Rock'N'Roll Star,' a historic piece by Oasis, which delivers a great adrenaline rush."
"'Bring It On Down' expresses all the anger of the English working class, which is kindly invited to 'destroy it.'"
"Perhaps this judgment is also influenced by the fact that in the 10 years that followed, Oasis shifted gears musically and captivated us with albums of a vastly different level."
"Track number three is indeed 'Live Forever': a great song that became the true anthem of a generation."
