Umanamente Uomo is the protagonist of “I GIARDINI DI MARZO”, the touching first track of this album. A man, indeed, melancholic, nostalgic, naive, and defeated. His fears, those of every day, seem to have ended, “my hands, as you can see, no longer shake”, there is rebirth, “immense skies and immense love”, but it is a moment, just a moment because “the courage to live is still not there yet”.
Transgression and sexual madness are told in a more carefree way by “INNOCENTI EVASIONI” seasoned with “record player, red lights and then cold champagne…”. The tone of the record returns to a darker mood with the obsessive thought of a woman, causing pain and anxiety “I don't know who you are with now, I don't know what you are doing, but I certainly know what you are thinking”.
“E PENSO A TE” starts quietly with the notes of a piano then rises in intensity sung by the choirs that in the end, fading, leave only the suffering man's voice to intone his own pain. Followed by a sweet whistle, accompanied by a whispered guitar, then sweet murmurs enveloped by the dreamy orchestration of a real dream…”UMANAMENTE UOMO”…and then again whistles and murmurs…”IL SOGNO”. Follows the praise to a woman who, despite the anger poisoning her heart out of jealousy and her eyes reddened while lying, managed to be “COMUNQUE BELLA”, with a dual interpretation by Battisti: the man-narrator on one side and the woman on the other.
“IL LEONE E LA GALLINA” is as amusing as an ironic fable in which a dog, which roars like a lion, chases a frightened hen. The story intertwines with that of two people in love (?), from their playful chasing similar to that of the two animals in the story. A ballad with only voice and guitar. Interesting.
Again love in “SOGNANDO E RISOGNANDO” in reassuring atmospheres (oxen, birds, and fishes) in stark contrast with the more than calm landscapes of the city (queues, traffic lights, parking, tranquilizers). Just a love to reach.
The blinding electric guitar tongues of “IL FUOCO” close, the same as on the cover, which at a certain point are joined by an unsettling choir (could it be hell?) chaotic, psychedelic…
The dream has turned into a nightmare.
"'Umanamente uomo: il sogno' is a fundamental album to understand and analyze the Battisti phenomenon."
"Battisti goes beyond his own ideas and convictions: he invents sweet and rarefied melodies and breaks the chains of monotony."
Not that I understood much, in fact. I would say I didn’t understand a thing. I simply liked drawing with The one with the fire.
Objectivity, in this case, is mute in the face of the unpredictability of a choice.
