The feeling that there is no world after death and the reflection on the problems that plague and plagued the world during human lives over the centuries lead Battisti to write this (in my opinion) magnificent album. This was the best-selling album of 1973.
"Il mio canto libero" was released precisely in November 1972 and became a huge success in our country. In fact, it is rare for an album to be at the top of the charts, albeit not consecutively, for eleven weeks. In this album, Battisti collaborated with various musicians; among the most notable are Alberto Radius, Mario Lavezzi, Vince Tempera, and Gian Piero Reverberi.
But I think the time has come to talk about the album and the concept that Battisti wants to express through the tracks. First of all, through "Il mio canto libero" Battisti presents us with the issue of love in almost all the songs. I concluded that the author wants us to understand how important this feeling is through beautiful very sweet vocal tones, and a pleasant and relaxing musical rhythm to listen to, thanks also to the various rhymes that accompany the songs.
Second and final point: the helpless and undesirable desire to die. Starting from the central part of the album, the singer-songwriter introduces us to a second very delicate and difficult topic to tackle: death. We find all this in "Vento nel Vento" where the discussion is approached starting from love itself. I think Battisti is attracted to the desire for a death that doesn't kill him, but rather allows him to live every moment of life with love and simplicity.
"Il mio canto libero" is a milestone in Battisti's production and a turning point in modern Italian song.
It’s the definitive turning point of Italian pop music, redefining the role of singer and songwriter to talk about feelings, not gossip.
"The 8 songs on this album have entered the history of Italian pop music, thanks to their freshness."
"The last track is the very famous title track, in my opinion, the best song ever written by Battisti, and one of his most famous."
