To promote the release of "See You On The Other Side," Korn, the renowned crossover metal band, release this DVD "Live On The Other Side," which, like the previous "Live," is recorded at the Hammerstein Ballroom in New York and showcases a feisty Korn, who once again affirm their superiority over other nu-metal bands and their live experience.
The concert features a crazy setlist, only 4 tracks from "SYOTOS," and many many classics from the Bakersfield band. This beautiful concert begins with a dark and melodic intro sung by a "clean" version of Davis, as usual, the real opener is the tectonic jolt of "Here To Stay," a hefty song from "Untouchables," performed by a truly aggressive Munky. Another classic with "Twist", Davis's psychotic rant here is less angry compared to the recording on the "Life is Peachy" album, but time passes for him too. First major novelty: "Got The Life," which was the finale in the previous DVD, now gives way and is positioned right at the top of the setlist, but I don't mind because its dancey groove gets you moving whether it's performed at the end or the beginning. First track from "See You On The Other Side," with "Liar", announced by Munky, the song takes much more shape live, even though it's good on the CD too, still you immediately feel the absence of all those electronic touches from the record and the rawer (and stripped) sound of the live setting!
We revisit the past with "A.D.I.D.A.S.", a beautiful crossover rock song that earned Korn the nickname of Adidas Metal, sung by everyone present! And here's the highlight of the concert, the best piece from the new album, "Coming Undone", strikes me with its huge live impact, overwhelming! The rag doll from "Issues" is picked up with an engaging "Dirty" and a very tough "Falling Away From Me", then returning to the present with the lively and cheerful riff of "Twisted Transistor", the lead single from the new album, this is a song that has already become a classic as evidenced by the audience's appreciation, closing the first part of the show. We resume with a purely metal song, "Did My Time", one of the singles from the aggressive "Take A Look In The Mirror," truly wreaks havoc beneath the stage, with a frenzied headbanging from the crowd of fans and naturally from Davis as well. Time for bagpipes with a solid "Shoots And Ladders", followed by the final part of "One" by Metallica (the same practice was used in the other DVD with "Make Me Bad", which however is not included in the setlist here, and I miss it dearly, as well as "Right Now").
"Freak On A Leash" isn't at the level of the "Live" DVD, but it's compensated by the cover of "Another Brick In The Wall" with a truly fantastic Davis, Fiedly (poor thing, I haven't mentioned him until now) as technical as always, also Silveria in this DVD is spectacular, with the precision that distinguishes him. The final part of the concert is opened by the legendary "Blind", its riff shakes the whole environment and the heads under the stage, proving to be after 7 albums, the best song ever written by the group. A slightly flat "Somebody Someone" follows, which makes way for the new "Hypocrites", nice song, but certainly not the best from the new album, and finally the great riff of "Y'All Want A Single", an angry song from "TALITM" against the music business, closing this umpteenth reaffirmation of a band like Korn. Importantly, Davis's citation toward the end of the concert of Head is worth noting, and the applause dedicated to him, showing that Korn do not forget their old companions (even if they left, and it's somewhat felt from a live standpoint), another point of merit goes to Rob Patterson, the ex-guitarist of Otep is forced to play backstage, at the will of the four Korn, well, this is very wrong because Rob is quite a guitarist.
The special features are divided into 3 sections; one is named after the new album and features footage of Korn with some of their fans chosen through a contest on the plane to New York, where they also play some pieces with David holding a toy drum set. "Look Who's On The Other Side" is another shorter video about the band's sound technicians, and it’s more of a tribute, nothing too interesting. Finally, the quirky video of "Coming Undone". In conclusion, this DVD is very well recorded with the four musicians truly in shape and is therefore destined for anyone wanting an idea of Korn live, as well as for the fans, of course!
