A few months ago, while playing GT4, I stumbled upon a young English band with a peculiar name, the “Kaiser Chiefs.”
Later, after listening to another of their singles, I decided to get their debut album, “Employment.” This English band offers an Indie Rock with electronic nuances, which is brilliant and original. The album begins with the cheerful “Everyday I Love You Less And Less,” a track with a driving and engaging rhythm, making it danceable and successful. It continues with the track that caught my attention during the hours I spent in front of the Playstation, namely “I Predict A Riot,” which presents a heavier guitar riff compared to the previous track but is fluid; the most rock (and perhaps the best) piece of the entire album.
“Modern Way” is the single that convinced me to get the album, and it's a relatively calm piece, with sweeter guitars and a pleasant keyboard motif in the background. In my opinion, the first three songs of the album are the best, but the rest certainly does not disappoint.
It continues with the danceable and fast “Na Na Na Na Naa” (which is also part of the soundtrack of the TV show O.C.); the sweet and melodic “You Can Have It All” is next to the calm “Oh My God.” “Born To Be A Dancer” is the most “mature” track of the album, with a keyboard background and a surprisingly complete sound that is overwhelming. The most lively track of the entire album is undoubtedly “Saturday Night,” with more “present” guitars and a “touch” of electronics. “What Did I Ever Give You” is a piece that builds up, starting with a techno keyboard and ending with a cheerful final chorus. “Time Honoured Tradition” is your typical “skip song”: short and slow, but generally pleasant. Perhaps the worst track on the album is “Caroline, Yes,” as it is a bit repetitive and predictable, while “Team Mate” is nothing transcendental, slow, sweet, and it closes the album slowly.
In general, this band, in their debut album, is “fresh” and innovative, with plenty of room for improvement.
The problem is that it seems like dealing with 'interchangeable' bands.
They really add nothing to what is the modern rock scene, no innovation at the vocal level, let alone instrumental.
The best comes with "I Predict A Riot" REALLY VERY BEAUTIFUL and I already think of electing Kaiser Chiefs heroes of the day.
Certainly to be avoided if you’re among those who hate lalalalala.
The Kaiser Chiefs are less interesting than the explanation behind their sudden success.
Our five lads from Leeds still have much to learn if they want to release at least another couple of records before disappearing.
"Employment turns out to be a nice record, but it’s good to listen to once, twice, maybe thrice... but in the end, it becomes tiring."
"Ricky Wilson, a wacky singer who’s a mix between Damon Albarn and a Robbie Williams under the influence of alcohol, is fun and enjoyable."
