"Predictable and trite. The debut album from the aeroplanes disappoints right from the first listen."
As usual, let's start with the obligatory clarifications: Jet's album contains many potential singles of good quality that have, of course, already made the specialized magazines shout for a miracle. The fact is that the whole work, although well-produced and arranged, leaves nothing for the listener, except for an endless flatness.
The beginning is electrifying with "Last Chance" and "Are You Gonna Be My Girl" (which thanks to the omnitel commercial I now start skipping frequently), "Look What You've Done" is a great ballad in the Lennon/McCartney style with a chorus that insistently lodges in your brain.
So? Why that 2/5 down there???
Everything reminds too much of something else, or, to put it another way, there is nothing different from what the Strokes (Velvet Underground), B.R.M.C. (Jesus And Mary Chain), Vines (Beatles/Nirvana) and the other, albeit minor, "derivatives" (see Raveonettes, Jeevas, Cooper Temple Clause, Music, etc., etc.) have been doing for almost 3 years... in short, it copies in a boring way.
So when you hear a ballad like "Move On", which, in other times (which I absolutely cannot specify) would have moved us, you feel nothing; this is also thanks to 10 years of Don't Look Back In Anger, Roll It Over, Talk Tonite, etc.
I'm certainly not saying that rock is dead, but for sure Get Born is not its hope for survival.
The heart of the album is weak and slow: "Radio Song" has a piano melody completely copied from "Homesick" by the Vines, which in turn clearly borrowed it from somewhere in the White Album, I think.
There are so many "YYYEEAHH" shouted a little to pump you up, a little to make up for the lack of writing, like Embrace and their famous "La-La-La-La... La" at the end of a song.
In short, everything, more or less, sounds like this: in this album, there are the Beatles, the Stones, the Oasis, and great songs made with 4 acoustic guitar chords, so, for this very reason, it's not worth spending 20 euros on it!!
"Listening to these four young guys from Melbourne... it feels like taking a leap back about thirty years."
"It’s pure lifeblood for the musicality and melody of an album that... leaves you with that sense of satisfaction and contentment."
"Get Born is a very varied CD that ranges from very calm and relaxing pieces... to more exhilarating ones capable of getting anyone dancing."
"As a first album, it can be said that it is definitely good and very listenable... we will hear more about these Jets and this Nic Cester in the future."
Finally, a bit of good old rock’n’roll.
It’s one of the few recent releases that can be appreciated after the first listen.
Every single song, if released thirty-five years ago, would have been a classic of the genre.
For those who love no-nonsense rock, Get Born is an album not to be missed.
