I remember it well, it was a morning in August, in a slow awakening with the TV on MTV.
At one point, between a Britney and a Tiziano Ferro, a video struck me. It was "Are you gonna be my girl" by the Jet... never heard of them before.
Finally, a bit of good old rock'n'roll. After some time, the CD of this nice Australian quartet ended up in my stereo. A perfect mix of angry rock tracks ("Cold hard bitch" or "Get what you need") and perfectly fitting ballads ("Look what you've done"). It's one of the few recent releases that can be appreciated after the first listen.
Guitar riffs that hit the mark, choruses that immediately stick in your head. Nick Cester's voice is always pushed to the limit, and only in "Move on" does he leave the microphone to his drummer-brother Chris Cester. Besides the fabulous "Are you gonna be my girl", "Rollover DJ", "Look what you've done", a special mention also goes to "Lazy gun". This is their debut album, let's hope they don't lose their way as happened to other bands that remained eternal promises and never fulfilled.
The DVD "Family style", released after the tour, is also excellent, which in the USA saw them support two other famous rock'n'roll siblings...
The debut album from the aeroplanes disappoints right from the first listen.
Everything reminds too much of something else... it copies in a boring way.
"Listening to these four young guys from Melbourne... it feels like taking a leap back about thirty years."
"It’s pure lifeblood for the musicality and melody of an album that... leaves you with that sense of satisfaction and contentment."
"Get Born is a very varied CD that ranges from very calm and relaxing pieces... to more exhilarating ones capable of getting anyone dancing."
"As a first album, it can be said that it is definitely good and very listenable... we will hear more about these Jets and this Nic Cester in the future."
Every single song, if released thirty-five years ago, would have been a classic of the genre.
For those who love no-nonsense rock, Get Born is an album not to be missed.
