THE REVIEW

Everything began last spring when two fast-catching electro-pop tracks appeared on YouTube: "Hoscritto una canzone pop" and "Io voglio fare il cantante." Flat voice, bouncing synths, a singer-songwriter vibe, and a name: "Il Piccolo Bu." It was recently discovered that this is not a one-man band formed by Giuseppe Cassano (formerly of The Hornet's), but a full-fledged band, with the peculiarity that the other 3 members remain anonymous. Is it Marketing 2.0 or 3.0? You decide. The work focuses on clear and catchy yet well-crafted lyrics, supported by a sound system that tries to fill all spaces without ever overpowering the words. Between songs, generational reflections pop up ("Noi siamo del duemila"), ironic moments ("Le Comunali"), tracks that loop in your head ("L'assistente" and "Negli anni '90"), and overall, the album plays without pauses. The similarities are present: ICani, Baustelle, and Max Gazzè, but what definitely characterizes this album is its lightness, found both in the music and the lyrics. In reality, "Noi siamo del 2000" is simply a sly album that will appeal to the same people it mocks and empathizes with. It covers everything from the national Maria (which isn't marijuana) to corrupt politicians. At the moment, I'm too busy bobbing my head like a bobblehead to the penetrating electronic pirupiru to protest and say, "no, I don't want to be labeled like that," but honestly, who cares in the end.

Summary by Bot

Il Piccolo Bu's album Noi siamo del 2000 delivers catchy electro-pop with well-crafted lyrics and a playful yet thoughtful tone. The music balances synths and vocals effortlessly while exploring generational and social themes. Though reminiscent of bands like ICani and Baustelle, it maintains a unique lightness. The band's partial anonymity adds intrigue, and the album’s charm lies in its cleverness that appeals both to its critics and fans. Overall, a fresh and engaging Italian indie pop experience.

Il Piccolo Bu

Initially rumored as a solo project by Giuseppe Cassano, it emerged as a four-piece with three members kept anonymous. Debut album Noi siamo del 2000 (2016) introduced catchy, synth-driven pop; Innocenti followed with softer tones; in 2022 the band returned with a melancholic retro-wave angle.

Noi siamo del 2000 is truly a great piece of work, each track flows pleasantly, without pauses, without breath.

The mixing should be improved, but perhaps it is this very flaw that makes Il Piccolo Bu unique.

Il Piccolo Bu points the finger at themselves, engaging in introspective self-criticism.

The album is a band that is fun yet dramatically nihilistic, which you may like or not.
