10 years have passed since the last effort "Good News for Modern Man," and now Grant is back with "Hot Wax," a highly anticipated work, at least from my perspective.
The album was partially recorded in collaboration with the band Godspeed You Black Emperor for the tracks recorded in Montreal, with the rest produced in the nearly blissful solitude of Minneapolis.
"You're The Reflection of the Moon on the Water," as the opening track, recalls the hypnotic flow of "All of my Senses," and the organ arrangement transports us directly to the '60s, as it does in "California Zephyr."
We are faced with an album with clear sixties influences, yet it doesn't sound old-fashioned, more like, uhm... out of time, I would say.
The sixties influences don't end here; for example, in tracks like "Barbara" or the less successful "I Knew All About You Since Then," we hear echoes of the Beach Boys and Zombies.
Also worth mentioning is the ballad "Schoolbuses are for Children" and the rock'n'roll of "Sailor Jack."
Amidst LO-Fi sounds and Wall of Sound, Grant delivers a work not entirely successful compared to the previous one; after all, 10 years of waiting led to higher expectations.
He will make up for it soon, considering his publishing rhythm, with the next "The Argument."
