Richard Patrick has cleaned up and continues to write and play like a man possessed.

After significant collaborations with Army Of Anyone (with the DeLeo brothers of Stone Temple Pilots) and The Damning Well (with Wes Borland, Danny Lohner, and Josh Freese), the frenzied veteran returns to the roots to complete the much-anticipated fourth chapter of the Filter saga.

The album's creation was halted in 2003, following the frontman's decision to undergo detoxification, which also resulted in the departure of Lenardo and Cavanaugh.

The Filter essentially involve a constant change of lineup due to various circumstances and musical misunderstandings. A one-man band driven and represented solely by Patrick.

Thus, John 5 and Josh Freese are recruited to support the leader in Anthems For The Damned.

The difference compared to other albums lies in the themes and a less angry approach than usual. The lyrics politically reflect the disdain towards the U.S. administration, and the entire project idea was conceived as a tribute to a young fan of the band, who went on a mission to Iraq while still in college and died in war.

Take the soldiers and put them at sand, put the town right from the man.

It's not hard to get swallowed up, George Bush just fucking us up.

See the lies that he has sold, wash us up and he has us done.

From the first notes of Soldiers Of Misfortune, the powerful riffs never leave the listener, and with the arrival of Richard, the atmosphere heats up, fueling the desire for revenge present even in the more rhythmic What's Next and Lie After Lie.

Post-grunge aficionados will find a pleasant interlude in Cold and the resigned In Dreams.

Among the vocalist's best releases, who, already with the following The Trouble With Angels, will return to composing pieces with his trademarks: sarcasm and adrenaline.

Anthems for the damned, it is more reflective and contained, a trait noticeable from the first listen.

I'd like to break free from here
It's gotten clear
The reasons have smeared
I'd like to break free from here
The land of the lonely
The reasons are phony

So pray
For the soldiers of misfortune
The soldiers of distortion
Dig a grave

I'd like to wake up from this dream
Can't we learn from history?
Why's it such a mystery?

I'd like to wake up from this dream
A world where they don't scream
A world without misery

So pray for the soldiers of misfortune
The soldiers of distortion
Hold a parade again

I'd like to wake up
In a dream
Where they don't scream
Without misery

Pray for the soldiers of misfortune
For the soldiers of distortion
Dig a grave

Pray for the soldiers of misfortune
For the soldiers of distortion
So hold a parade

Over there
Over there
I won't come back
When it's over
Over there
Over there
Over there
Over there

12   Only You (04:40)
