Carillon del dolore

Years ago, while reading on Rock Sounds one of the many reviews dedicated to the demos of the month, I was struck by a definition given to a dark wave band; the piece said: "Distressing and disillusioned like a song by Carillon del Dolore." That line made me say I have to listen to them, and from there began a small but great passion for Italian new wave.

Joy Division

The seminal greatness of this group is needless to emphasize; Joy Division, with their minimalism—so far removed from iconoclastic and "flashy" bands like Bauhaus or Virgin Prunes—changed the history of rock, creating a unique and unmistakable blend. I will always be grateful to Ian Curtis for his sensitivity, greatness, and humanity in knowing how to transform art into something epidermal. Thank you, Ian.

Claudio Baglioni

Apicella is technically skilled, but he sucks. Baglioni is a mediocre artist, like many in Italy. But think of the true singer-songwriters: Lolli with "Borghesia," Guccini, something from Battisti, groups like Le Orme, Area. I wouldn't forget the soundtracks by Goblin either. Forget about Baglioni.

Alice in Chains

Alice in Chains from Dirt to Alice in Chains... and beyond have, from my perspective, been the best grunge band ever. For two reasons: the first is Layne's depressive and introspective soul, and the second is Cantrell's gritty guitar. Currently, they are just a mediocre band; guys, where has their energy gone... the last album was terrible, and in my view, the recent live performances have been awful. It's better to quit, change the name, or attempt other solo work.
