In 1895, Marconi approached the Minister of Posts and Telegraphs, Hon. Pietro Lacava, outlining the invention of the wireless telegraph and requesting funding. The letter went unanswered and was dismissed by the minister with the notation "alla Longara," referring to the asylum located on Via della Lungara in Rome. In 1909, Guglielmo Marconi shared the Nobel Prize in Physics with the German physicist Carl Ferdinand Braun.
