not quite earl; nu metal is the evolution of traditional "crossover" that began with bands like rage against the machine, red hot chili peppers, urban dance squad, and faith no more; the forefathers of this genre are korn, closely followed by various deftones, clawfinger, limp bizkit, coal chamber, etc... many mistakenly compare this term with "rap-metal," but it's not always the case: nu metal is not just the union of rap and metal, but rather the combination of metal with other genres like grunge, industrial, jazz, and even ethnic music (and this is where the concept of "crossover" lies)... I've greatly summarized, but I don’t feel like delving into such a broad discussion right now...
