Launched towards success by two singles, the first a cover of Jacko's famous track "Smooth Criminal" and the second a pop-punk styled piece titled "Movies", Alien Ant Farm has proven to be quirky in these choices, which do not really represent the sound of the rest of the album. There are many nods to nu metal, with the guitar taking the lead as in the first track "Courage" or in "Whisper", but also some funkier passages (a bit Red Hot, to be clear...) as in "Summer" or in "Fish And Bone", the inevitable ballad "Happy death day" and finally a piece that in my humble opinion is one of the most beautiful of the entire work, namely "Attitude", a track built on a laid-back rhythm (if I may use that expression), with drums that recall tribal jambee-like sounds and a bass that bounces between notes. Finally, Dryden's voice is truly unique; it can be gritty, carefree, sweet, shouted, whispered... in short, a pretty decent voice.
Surely ANThology will not be remembered as a milestone of contemporary rock, but it still does its job...
